Summary: We take a look at just a few of them. How do we overcome a state of mind that is negative?

Dispositional Sin

By: Pastor Ron Crandall

Intro:

Dispositional Sins what are they?

This morning I want to look at maybe few if we have time.

What is the defition of Dispositional Sin: Innate Temper; natural tendency of the mind

Turn with me to Act 7:53

Acts 7:53

53 you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it."

(NIV)

1.) Critical Spirit - James 1:19&20

James 1:19-26

19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

20 for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror

24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.

26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

(NIV)

These are people who can tell you how it should be done, but live it well that is another story.

James 4:6-7

6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

(NIV)

2.) Depressed Spirit

Is a result of the lack of faith that circumstance can be changed!

* Paul writing to the church of Corinth said we are to be happy

But we know that is sometimes hard to do facing circumstances, we as Christians need to be focused on the mark of the prize of the high calling.

Heb 11:6

6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

(NIV)

But even with that knowledge we let the devil put us in condemnation but Paul wrote:

Rom 8:1-2

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

(NIV)

Pastor then how do we combat the most common of dispositional sins?

There are four Major Signs or I call them Sign Posts.

a.) Physical Pressure - Caused by Lack of rest

b.) Boredom - you get in the same rut, constantly doing the same thing, (mix it up)

c.) Constant Pressure- Job, Family, and then church, these are in order according to most people

d.) Guilt- caused by the sins of Commission and Omission

1.) Co-mission- when you are doing something you know the bible teaches against

2.) Omission - is when you don’t quite know if you should or should not?

I’ve always told people if you have to question then you probably trying to out run God changing you and maturing you. So DON’T do it.

3.) There 107 sins of Co-mission and Omission

4. Have you been depressed continually; you are not using your faith as the grain of a mustard seed.

Close the door this morning on these four signs thru prayer and repentance

I Jn 1:7-10

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

(NIV)

3.) Resentful Spirit:

a.) When you dislike someone or something, it is because you see yourself in them or it

(The thing you hate the most is the thing you are.)

b.) You are suffering from personal insecurity and everyone is a threat, and the tendency is to lash out or gossip

c.) Look at their talent and maybe your lack of it, and you have the hardest time understanding why they’ve been promoted! If Pastor or the Sunday school director knew what I knew, Boy they would change their minds. And Quick!!!!

So Jealousy, Bitterness now set in let me ask you who is in worse shape.

4.) Selfish Spirit:

a.) These people use people and they are in love with themselves

b.) They’re not interested in what you are doing

c.) They suffer from keeping up with the snobgrasses (fictional couple of the church)

Pride & Materialism are their downfall

5.) Negative Spirit:

a.) It’s gonna rain (hey it always rains here it is Oregon) Have you ever seen Gulliver’s travels when you were a kid? There was this little guy who was always saying “We’ll never make!” “We can’t do it!”

b.) Everyone has something wrong with them

c.) Always grumpy and grouchy. Where is the Joy of the Lord which is my strength!

6.) Irritable Spirit

a.) Unpredictable and they don’t even know why

b.) They are out of control

c.) A poor relationship with the Holy Spirit is what produces an Irritable Spirit

d.) They need a relationship on based in and thru the Holy Spirit in order to break free

How can I break free from dispositional sin that have become bondages in my life

1.) Do not except the judgment of your own heart

2.) Make no important life decisions, until you get on top and the Lord provides a way of escape. Then you can be Spirit led to make important decisions.

3.) Go to the Word of God and search out his promises and requirements to those who believe.

James 3:17-18

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

(NIV)

We know by Gods word these are his attributes.

Gal 5:22-26

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

(NIV)

1Thes 5:16-19

16 Be joyful always;

17 pray continually;

18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;

(NIV)

Hab 3:18-19

18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

(NIV)

Ps 101:1-6

1 I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise.

2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life-- when will you come to me? I will walk in my house with blameless heart.

3 I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me.

4 Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have nothing to do with evil.

5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, him will I not endure.

6 My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he whose walk is blameless will minister to me.

(NIV)
