Creative Design or Dumb Luck
Sermon 1 in series on Life changing Bible Stories from God’s Word.
Genesis 1:1-2:3
Psalms 139:14
A recent Gallup Poll found that the greatest number of Americans (47% of those expressing an opinion) hold to the strict creationist view, that God created man pretty much in his present form within the last 10,000 years. Most other Americans believe in some combination of evolution and creationism, and only nine percent of Americans believe in strict evolution. And yet in our colleges, universities, most public schools, state parks, and educational television, evolution is not taught as a theory but as a fact.
I. THE ORIGIN OF LIFE.
A) The creationist believes that God has always been and always will be. God in His mercy created the World and then created life to inhabit the world.
B) The creationist believes that God made man in His image.
1) God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit—All three are One.
2) Man has body, soul and spirit—Three distinctly different parts but all one person.
C) The creationist believes that God spoke and it was.
D) Carl Sagan, opens his book Cosmos by saying: “The Cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.” We are not children of God, but “children of the Cosmos,” In his popular, made-for-television series, he stated that life began somewhere in a slime pond.
E) Some say “Well, God created the world but used evolution to do it over billions of years.” Dr. Kent Hovind of Creation Science Evangelism says “For 2,000 years, nearly all Christians believed and taught that the earth was approximately 6,000 years old as revealed by God’s Word. In the early 1800s, some unbelievers began to teach that the earth was "millions of years old." This old earth teaching laid the groundwork for the evolution theory, which became popular a few years later. In an effort to blend both beliefs, some theologians invented the "gap theory" which allowed "millions of years" to be placed between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.”
The gap theory, in my opinion, was formed merely to make the Bible fit what is perceived as Science. The evolutionary theory is not Science. It is religion, pagan religion.
II. THE MEANING OF LIFE.
A) The meaning of life is greatly different for the creationist and evolutionist. Let’s take a look at both.
B) The evolutionist believes that a big bang or explosion took place in space that set into action the events of evolution. Molecules eventually turned into animals and animals into humans.
1) There are no moral absolutes—the Bible is manmade and God is a lie.
2) We are not the final evolution, we will one day evolve into aliens.
C) The creationist believes Psalm 139:14 “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” And Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
D) I was hunting recently and I sat watching two squirrels. One of them was feverishly working to prepare for the winter. It was all over the place, finding nuts and scurrying around to pick them up, take them to his nest, and store them away for the winter. The other was watching the first. Every time the first would leave his nest to get more nuts, the second would go into the nest and steal nuts from the other’s nest. It was funny. You know why? Because they are squirrels. They do not have a soul. There is no morality code for them to live by. They are animals. We are not!
III. THE AFTER LIFE.
A) For the evolutionist the varying beliefs about the afterlife or many. But most believe that we just cease to exist.
B) For the creationist we understand that God made us with a soul. That soul has been marred with sin. But because of the redemptive grace of God, we are able to make a choice.
1) A choice to reject Christ and His forgiveness and spend an eternity in hell---a choice that most will make.
2) A choice to accept Christ and His forgiveness and spend an eternity with Him in Heaven. A choice that I plead with you to make today.
Thinking of the fullness and duration of this wonderful life, W. B. Hinson, a great preacher of a past generation, spoke from his own experience just before he died. He said, “I remember a year ago when a doctor told me, ‘You have an illness from which you won’t recover.’ I walked out to where I live 5 miles from Portland, Oregon, and I looked across at that mountain that I love. I looked at the river in which I rejoice, and I looked at the stately trees that are always God’s own poetry to my soul. Then in the evening I looked up into the great sky where God was lighting His lamps, and I said, ‘ I may not see you many more times, but Mountain, I shall be alive when you are gone; and River, I shall be alive when you cease running toward the sea; and Stars, I shall be alive when you have fallen from your sockets in the great downpulling of the material universe!’”
