Mt.10:28 Is There A Place Called Hell?
Intro:A servey was once taken of 7,441 clergy
concerning their belief about hell. 58% of Methodist,
60% of Episcopalians, 54% of Presbyterians, 35% of
American Baptists believed that hell is not a location
after death for the lost, but the experiences of
self-estrangement, guilt, and meaninglessness in this
life. Let’s take a look at what the Bible really says
about hell....
I. The Place Called Hell.
A. Hell is a place beneath man.
Isa. 14:9, 15 : [9] "Hell from beneath is
excited about you,To meet you at your coming;
It stirs up the dead for you,[15] Yet you shall be
brought down to Sheol,To the lowest depths of the Pit.
Ezek 31:16:"I made the nations shake
at the sound of its fall, when I cast it down to
hell together with those who descend into the
Pit." God speaking of Assyria.
Amos 9:2:[2] "Though they dig into hell,From
there My hand shall take them; Though they
climb up to heaven, From there I will bring
them down."
Ps.55:15:"Let death seize them; Let them go
down alive into hell, For wickedness is in their
dwellings and among them." David calls this
on his enemies knowing that God had once
did this to Mose’s enemies[Num. 16:30-34].
Mt.11:23:"And you, Capernaum, who are
exalted to heaven, will be brought down to
Hades; for if the mighty works which were
done in you had been done in Sodom, it would
have remained until this day." Speaking of the
indifference to Christ and His work.
B. Hell is a Place of Eternal Fire.
Dt.32:22;”For a fire is kindled in My anger,
And shall burn to the lowest hell..” God
speaking of His judgment of sin.
Mt.18:9;”And if your eye causes you to sin,
pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better
for you to enter into life with one eye, rather
than having two eyes, to be cast into hell
fire.” Jesus speaking on repentance instead of
going to Hell.
Mk.9:44,:Jesus calls it “...the fire that shall
never be quenched...”[Is66:24]
Lu.16:24;” Then he cried and said,’Father
Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger
in water and cool my tongue, for I am
tormented in this flame.” Jesus speaking of
the rich man.
II. The People of Hell.
Who are they?
A. All People and Nations who Forgot God.
Ps.9:17:”The wicked shall be turned into hell,
And all the nations that forgot God.” That
includes the Muslim nations.
Mt.23:33:”Serpents, brood of vipers! How can
you escape the condemnation of hell?” Even the
religious can make into hell.
B. The Proud and Haughty.
Isa.5:14-15:”Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself
And opened its mouth beyond measure; Their
glory and their multitude and their pomp,
And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.
People shall be brought down, Each man shall
be humbled, And the eyes of the lofty shall be
humbled,” There is plenty of room in hell.
Pr.16:18:”Pride goes before destruction, And a
haughty spirit before a fall.”
C. The devil and his angels.
Isa.14:14,15:”...I will be like the Most High. Yet
you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the
lowest depths of the Pit.”
IIPet.2:4:”....God did not spare the angels who
sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered
them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for
judgment.”
Mt.25:41:”Then He will also say to those on the
left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the
everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his
angels.”
III. The Permanence of Hell.
A. It is Eternal Vengeance.
Jude7:”As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the
cities around them in a similar manner to
these, having given themselves over to
sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh,
are set forth as an example, suffering the
vengeance of eternal fire.
Jude11:”....perished in the rebellion of Korah.”
The earth opened up and took Korah and his
family to hell.[Num.16:1-3, 31-35]
IIThes.1:7-9:”...to give you who are troubled
rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed
from heaven with His mighty angels, in
flaming fire taking vengeance on those who
do not know God, and on those who do not
obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the glory of His power.”
Those who do evil to us will pay a price of
eternal proportions.
B. It is Eternal torment.
Rev.14:11:”And the smoke of their torment
ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest
day or night, who worship the beast and his
image, and whoever receives the mark of his
name”
Mt.25:46:”...these will go away into everlasting
punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
C. It is a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mt.8:12, 22:13, 24:51, 25:30:”...there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Lu.13:28:”There will be weeping and gnashing
of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and
Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of
God; and yourselves thrust out.” Jesus again
speaking of the legalistic religious leaders of His
day.
Conclusion:Some people would wish the reality of hell
away. But the Bible is clear both in the O.T. and N.T.,
there is a real place of pain and torment. It is a place
were God will send Satan and the devils. But, it is also
a place were lost sinners will spend eternity. It is not
God’s fault that humanity sins. But, it is God’s joy
and pleasure to offer humanity a way out. A way that
is provided through the love of His Son Jesus Christ.
If you are not saved, today is your day. But, if you
are, then you are given the responsibility to share this
message to them. Let’s pray.
