1 SAMUEL 16:14-23
David has now been promoted to leadership class 201 from class 101. In class 101 he was introduced to leadership and now he is going to learn some the most important initial applicable lessons about leadership.
What are some of the most important initial lessons that can be learned in life’s leadership development class? The first leadership development lesson is:
I. IDENTIFYING OUR NEED 16:14, 18 "the lord is with him" (our relationship with the Lord)
(understand our Need)
"I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." (John 15:5)
A. Prioritized - having a specific place and time for meeting with the Lord
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)
B. Planned - asking God to lead us in this area and writing it down
"And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." (Luke 11:1)
C. Progressive - making changes to improve our relationship with the Lord
"But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18)
II. STRENGTHENING OUR FAITH 16:21 "David came to Saul"
A. Ask for it (see Mark 9:23-24)
"Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not." (James 4:2)
B. Add to it (Romans 10:17)
"And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;" (2 Peter 1:5)
C. Apply it (2 Corinthians 5:7) See Eph. 3:20
III. BUILDING OUR CHARACTER 16:18 "who is cunning, mighty, valiant prudent and comely"
A. Acknowledging the need
B. Confessing your sin (1 John 1:9)
C. Yielding to the Holy Spirit
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come." (John 16:13)
"Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God." (Romans 6:13)
D. Applying the Word of God
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." (James 1:22)
"But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." (James 1:25)
E. Desiring to be like Jesus
IV. EXERCISING OUR LOVE 16:21
A. What type of love?
1. Sincere Love "loved him greatly"
2. Submissive Love "stood before him"
3. Serving Love "he became his armor-bearer"
4. Sacrificial Love
A deep concern for God, our companions in the faith, lost souls and the things of God. Do we give a care? David did!
