Praying Like Jesus – part 4
“Give us This Day…”
Skit…on Lord’s prayer
For three weeks now we have been plunging the depths of the greatest prayer that was ever prayed. AND, during our study we have seen just like the skit illustrated, that there is so much more to this prayer then we had ever imagined… Our text today is the next phrase in the disciple’s prayer; “Give us this day our daily bread…”
As I began studying these words this week – I once again found myself asking; what do these words mean? What is Jesus trying to teach us? What are praying these words supposed to do? How will praying these words change us? What things flashed through the minds of the 12 when they heard these words for the very first time?
AND – as I asked these questions, I realized that once again I was on a journey… a journey that I knew would be well worth the trip.
I want to begin today with a bunch of snap shots from the bible that I think will be useful in helping us understand what it really means to pray the words; “Give us this day our daily bread…”
Snap Shot #1;
The first snap shot took place over 3,000 years ago… We read about it in Exodus 16. Let me set up this snap shot.
By the time this chapter opens up, God’s people after 400 years of captivity in Egypt have been set free by the power of God. Throughout all 10 plagues (frogs, boils, darkness, death of first born) , the Israelites were protected & shielded as God brought both Pharaoh and the Egyptian empire to it’s knees.
NOW - after seeing all of that, after experiencing God’s provision first hand, after experiencing His protection and deliverance (so powerfully, so clearly and so recently), you would think that these guys would be willing to follow God anywhere, that they would trust him with anything. That they’d be confident that every single need they had, would be met – that God could handle it, right?
WELL – it’s just one month out of Egypt and Moses writes in Exodus 16;
"Then they left Elim and journeyed into the Sin Desert, between Elim and Mount Sinai. They arrived there a month after leaving Egypt. There, too, the whole community of Israel spoke bitterly against Moses and Aaron.
"Oh, that we were back in Egypt," they moaned. "It would have been better if the LORD had killed us there! At least there we had plenty to eat. But now you have brought us into this desert to starve us to death." Then the LORD said to Moses, "Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. The people can go out each day and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether they will follow my instructions. Tell them to pick up twice as much as usual on the sixth day of each week." Then Moses and Aaron called a meeting of all the people of Israel and told them, "In the evening you will realize that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt. In the morning you will see the glorious presence of the LORD. He has heard your complaints, which are against the LORD and not against us. The LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. Yes, your complaints are against the LORD, not against us." Then Moses said to Aaron, "Say this to the entire community of Israel: `Come into the LORD’s presence, and hear his reply to your complaints.’ " And as Aaron spoke to the people, they looked out toward the desert. Within the guiding cloud, they could see the awesome glory of the LORD. And the LORD said to Moses, "I have heard the people’s complaints. Now tell them, `In the evening you will have meat to eat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’ "
That evening vast numbers of quail arrived and covered the camp. The next morning the desert all around the camp was wet with dew. When the dew disappeared later in the morning, thin flakes, white like frost, covered the ground. The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. "What is it?" they asked. And Moses told them, "It is the food the LORD has given you. The LORD says that each household should gather as much as it needs. Pick up two quarts for each person."
So the people of Israel went out and gathered this food--some getting more, and some getting less. By gathering two quarts for each person, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed.
Then Moses told them, "Do not keep any of it overnight." But, of course, some of them didn’t listen and kept some of it until morning. By then it was full of maggots and had a terrible smell. And Moses was very angry with them.
The people gathered the food morning by morning, each family according to its need. And as the sun became hot, the food they had not picked up melted and disappeared. On the sixth day, there was twice as much as usual on the ground--four quarts for each person instead of two.
A little later they finally named their Frosted Flakes, and they named them manna. Which basically means; "what is it ?:." It’s a loose translation that means, "I haven’t a clue what it is, but we’ve got to name it something."
It kind of reminds me a little bit of the lunches I used to have at school or recently had at Milligan…. You know, were they serve you "mystery meat." "What is it? I don’t know… I’m not sure – I’m afraid to ask…
NOW UNDERSTAND – though the Israelites may not have known what this stuff was, they did know one thing: It wasn’t there the day before – BUT it was there now… They were hungry and God delivered… LISTEN – every morning God sent this stuff, six days a week. It was enough to feed about two to three million people every day for forty years.
Now I did some math on this. 2 quarts x 3 million people is 6 million quarts a day. That’s 2.2 billion quarts per year… Over 80 billion quarts during the time in wilderness. And if we assume that each quart took up only 1 square foot (it probably took up more…) that means that the ground cover each morning by the manna was equal to about 266 football fields…
God took care of them – he rained downed bread from heaven…
Snap Shot #2;
He had been out in the desert for many days – he hadn’t eaten, he was hungry. The evil one came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread…” Jesus answered, ‘it is written, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word the comes from the mouth of God.” Mt 4:2,3
Snap shot #3;
Jesus was on the far shore of the Sea of Galilee. A great crowd had gathered, they had been there for a long time, they were hungry so Jesus took 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and multiplied them and fed 5,000+ people.
Think about it – that’s a lot of bread… The people were blown away and thought ‘hey this guy would make a great king – and he’d do wonders for our grocery bill…” BUT – Jesus wouldn’t have any of that and he took off to the mountains to be alone – what do you think he did up there? Prayed….
WELL – the next morning – Jesus is with the disciples, on the other side of the lake – and the people he had fed the other day had tracked Him down. And Jesus said to them;
"The truth is, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign. But you shouldn’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I, the Son of Man, can give you. For God the Father has sent me for that very purpose." They replied, "What does God want us to do?" Jesus told them, "This is what God wants you to do: Believe in the one he has sent." They replied, "You must show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What will you do for us? After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! As the Scriptures say, `Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’" Jesus said, "I assure you, Moses didn’t give them bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "give us that bread every day of our lives." Jesus replied, "I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry again. Those who believe in me will never thirst. Jn 6:26-35 (NLT)
Snap Shot #4;
Jesus is on that grassy hillside by the sea of Galilee. He’s shared with them many things – including the disciples prayer and then he says;
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:7-11
OKAY – that’s the 4 snap shots all of them took place before Jesus taught the 12 the words “Give us this day our daily bread…” in Luke 11…
PRAYER….
“Give us this day our daily bread…”
UNDERSTAND – with these words we have turned a major corner in our journey through he disciples prayer.. YOU SEE – the first three requests direct our attention to God our Father, who is in the heavens.
We are instructed to;
Pray to the Father about His name, “Hallowed me your name…”
about His kingdom, “Your kingdom come…”
about His will, “Your will be done…”
UNDERSTAND – the first half of the prayer is designed to put the second half in perspective. Jesus is intentionally teaching here that we are to begin with God’s concerns. LISTEN – there is a reason when Jesus taught the 12 to pray that he didn’t have them start out with.. “Give us…” WHY? Because we are FIRST to pray to God, about the things that he most concerned about (his name…). AND – only after that are we ready to pray for ourselves and others…
YOU KNOW - I see the first half of Jesus prayer as acting as a filter… LISTEN – after we have sincerely prayed about; God’s name, God’s kingdom and God’s will – we will pray ‘much’ differently about our needs, THEN if we would have started them… Does that make sense?
NOW - in the second half of the disciple’s prayer, Jesus said we are to pray for;
Provision - “Give us today our daily bread…” - provision takes care of our present.
Pardon – “Forgive our trespasses…” - pardon takes care of our past.
Protection - “Lead us not into temptation…” - protection takes care of our future
QUESTION – are you beginning to see the power of the ‘disciples’ prayer? UNDERSTAND - these are not just words that we are to recite as part of some ritual…They go so much deeper that that… One author rightly says;
“Everything that can be brought legitimately into prayer is the Lord’s prayer. That is why it is such a tragic mistake for us to overlook the Lord’s prayer or to think that it is just a Sunday morning ritual. It is more than just a pattern or model for prayer. If you understand it in its breadth, everything that you can legitimately pray about is contained in either the first half or second half of this great prayer.”
LISTEN – these are some of the most powerful words ever spoken… AND - to pray them sincerely and regularly will help us pray like Jesus.
AGAIN – we are looking at the very first request – we are looking at the request for God’s provision… AND let me say this, to pray these 7 words, “Give us this day our daily bread” and really mean them will transform your life in at least 6 ways…
BUT – before we look at those transformations – I think it will be beneficial to define what is meant by the word bread…
UNDERSTAND - the word bread in the disciples prayer stands not just for the kind of bread we slice and eat - but also for all the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our every day life.
Martin Luther wrote in 1529;
What does daily bread mean? Everything that nourishes our body and meets its needs, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, yard, fields, cattle, money, possessions, a devout spouse, devout children, devout employees, devout and faithful rulers, god government, peace, health, discipline, honor, good fiends, faithful neighbors and other things like these…”
Okay – let’s talk about the transformations that take place when we sincerely pray these words…
FIRST – of all we are transformed;
From Fear To Confidence…
UNDERSTAND - the people during the time of Christ – God’s people, did not feel that God was someone who they could approach personally… Sure the priests could offer prayers for the nation – but the average Jew did not view God as someone that they could come to with their daily needs…
QUESTION – do you feel confident in approaching God with your daily needs? Do you think he really cares about what you are going through and struggling with? Do you feel completely free and confident to go to him?
NOW this mindset – this thinking that God is not really approachable on a personal level - is why both in Matthew and in Luke –when Jesus gave the disciple’s prayer, that he also told parables – to drive home the truth – that we can come to God – he is our dad!!!
In the parable in Matthew (snapshot #4) Jesus says right after saying that in regards to praying that we are to keep asking, seeking & knocking;
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
AND in Luke right after giving the 12 the model prayer…Jesus tells a story about a man who had an unexpected guest and went to a friend at midnight to get some bread… and the point that Jesus is making to underscore the approachableness of God is that if a grumpy neighbor will help you out when you have a need how much more will your father - help you…
LISTEN - Jesus was trying to get the disciples to understand that their thinking was wrong, it was whacked, it was way off track.. Jesus wanted them to know that they could approach God about their needs – and that they could come to him, without fear…
Why? BECAUSE he is a father who knows how to give good gifts – he is a friend who doesn’t mind our knocking at his door even at midnight because he has plenty of bread…
BOTTOMLINE - God cares about our needs… and we can approach him in confidence… We don’t have to fear him when we come to him with a need… LISTEN – I am far from a perfect father but my kids don’t fear me when they come to me with a need… In fact if they have a need I want then to come to me….
NOW – sometimes they may fear coming to me - when they have a ‘want’ and they afraid I may say no….
CHECKOUT – this scriptures;
Hebrews 4:14-16
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
OKAY – one more brief thing before I leave this point, AND it is this, your Father is who in the heavens is the one you must go to for your needs, UNDERSTAND - the devil has a need meeting program as well, BUT his will mess you up… LISTEN – it matters from whose table you eat from…
From Grumbling To Gratitude
In snapshot #1; the Israelites were out in the desert, and they were grumbling against God. They had seen God’s powerful provision. They had seen him separate the Red Sea and protect them from Pharaoh and guide them with the fire in the clouds, and yet they were grumbling.
A month ago they were slaves - and now they are free! God delivered them he rescued you them…he saved them – and NONE of that matters 30 days later… I mean can you even believe these guys…? How ungrateful… This is not a very pretty snapshot of God’s people… It is one that the Jews wish they could of deleted off Moses PC, before Exodus went to print.
LISTEN - It is so easy for us (like the Israelites) to forget all the ways & times, that God has taken care of us, isn’t it? I mean, last week we were thanking him for something, and this week we can’t remember what in the world it was that God had done
UNDERSTAND - the word ‘give’ in “Give us this day our daily bread” - teaches us that everything we have comes from God [Father we need you to give us these things or else we will never have them] James says it this way…”Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows…” James 1:17
LISTEN - everything – is from God… The clothes, the food, the friendships, the house, the education, the job we have, the mind we use, the words we speak, everything comes from God…
QUESTION – do you believe that? Or do you feel some of what you have is because of your own effort and sweat?
CONSIDER – these words from Moses; “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you…” Dt 8:10 ‘hey guys – remember you only have this land because God gave it to you…’
YOU – only have this house, car, job, ability ..etc because God gave it to you….
AND - David said the following; “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand” (1 Chron 29:14) Again David declares; “You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing…” Psalms 145:16
These words “Give us this day our daily bread…” are designed to transform us from grumbling to gratitude… (AND THINK about this IF - your gratitude level needs a boost…. SOME people (millions) have to literally pray these words – God if you don’t help me we are not going to eat today… I’ve never had to pray that – and neither have most if not all here today…
LISTEN - we need to be grateful for;
The mess to clean after a party because it means
We have been surrounded by friends.
The taxes we pay because it means
That we are employed.
The clothes that fit a little too snug because it means
we have enough to eat.
A lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing
because it means we have a home.
The space we find at the far end of the parking lot
because it means we are capable of walking.
Our huge heating bill
because it means we are warm.
The rattle on our car
because it means that I can hear.
The piles of laundry and ironing
because it means we have clothes to wear.
Weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day
because it means we have been productive.
The alarm that goes off in the early morning hours
because it means that we are alive.
From Selfishness to Selflessness
“Each of you should look NOT ONLY to your own interests but also to the interests of others..” Phil 2:5
NOTICE – that Jesus does tell us to pray – “Father give me my daily bread…” BUT – rather “Give us our daily bread… NOW - that’s a completely different prayer.
LISTEN – every time you pray this prayer you are not only invited and encouraged, but you are commanded to pray with and for your brothers and sisters in Christ…
AND IF – we only pray for our own needs with no thought to the needs of others we are most definitely not praying like Jesus…
QUESTION – do you know of anyone in this church who has a need for some bread? Someone who has a physical, emotional, relational or spiritual need….?
DO you pray for those needs? How often? As often as you pray for your own?
AGAIN - if our first response in prayer is to pray for us and only us – we have missed the whole point of prayer according to Jesus…
In fact Jesus shortly after he taught the disciples how to pray in Luke 11 – told a parable in Luke 12 – about a man who only cared about his needs – who only lived for himself… AND God said this man was a fool…
AND LISTEN – sometimes we are just as foolish and selfish… Think about all the needs that are within the lives of this body here at Central. There are MANY…
Are you able to pay your bills each month – some really struggle…
For some of us living hand to mouth means that we eat too much – for others it means how can pay my electric bill and still get my kids clothes for school…
Do have a good marriage – praise God for it.. But some are really hurting do you pray for them…
You have a partner in life – and at times when you are weary they can take the ball from you… we have many ladies here at Central who have no such luxury – how often do you pray for them…
You have good parents – they love you, they don’t treat you bad, and make you feel worthless – some youth that come within these walls have some pretty tough home lives do you pray for them…
QUESTION – do you see how un-JESUS-like it is to be praying for ourselves all the time – for new cars, new homes, vacations – whatever… AND yet - NOT EVER REALLY pray for the needs of those within our own church family…
QUESTION – if you were to make a list of your needs and another list of all the needs of all the people at Central which list would be bigger? Which list do you spend more time praying about?
How about a list of all the needs of all the people in the world… ?
LISTEN JESUS – is clearly teaching in this prayer that the Christian life is an us thing not a me thing…
AND this is a revolutionary and transforming to people like us who live in such a self-centered culture… [and note if you start to pray for the needs of others – God juts might use you to answer those needs}
From Troubled To Trusting
UNDERSTAND – the words, “give us this day our daily bread…” are designed to transform us; to make us different then we are [confident, grateful, selfless] and another major way it does that is to move us from living trouble lives – to living trusting lives…
NOW – for some of us that is pretty hard to do. YOU SEE - we are kind of like the Israelites who – after God had brought through some awesome things (like; 400 years of slavery, a red sea and angry Pharaoh) didn’t trust God to take care of them… and who even tried to save up some manna because they were not really sure that God could be trust to provide for the next day…
QUESTION – are we any different? Are you? SURE – God was there for me in the past – he is here today BUT I’m not sure that he’ll be there tomorrow… and so we start worrying about what the future holds…worrying about this or that
LISTEN – worry is an enemy of trust… worry is a lack of faith in God’s ability to care for you… AND Jesus just a few sentences after giving us the disciples prayer in Matthew six said the following… This is God’s word – here it gain…
So I tell you, don’t worry about everyday life--whether you have enough food, drink, and clothes. Doesn’t life consist of more than food and clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t need to plant or harvest or put food in barns because your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not. "And why worry about your clothes? Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you? You have so little faith! "So don’t worry about having enough food or drink or clothing. Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.
"So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
And Paul writes from a prison cell (read Phil 4:18,19)…
You can trust your father in the heavens to provide for your needs…
QUESTION – what do you need today?
Literal food….
Strength to endure a tough situation
Help with a weakness
A break with your finances
Help with your marriage
Wisdom for a business decision
From Greed To Contentment
NOTICE – Jesus says that we are to pray for our daily bread – NOT for our daily dessert…”Lord give me daily Ben and Jerry’s” UNDERSTAND - Jesus encourages us to pray for our needs not our greeds. We are to ask God for what we really need, not for every wild dream that comes flying into our mind.
QUESTION - are you content or are you always wanting more…Jesus said shortly after teaching the 12 “Give us…”
“Watch Out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed: a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions…” Lk 12:15
Now the word translated as greed – is a compound Greek word that means “to have more…”
Jesus is telling them to guard themselves from the desire to have more… I think the Living bible does a good job with this verse…
“Beware! Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are…” Lk 12:15 (LB)
Listen – millions of people are killing themselves for more….More choices, More experiences, More successes, More stuff. AND we’re bombarded, every day, by millions of messages that tell us that more, eventually, will lead to contentment. Messages that tell us that we are just one purchase OR one gut busting experience away from contentment…
But understand that the writers of Scripture have a very different take on contentment. The Apostle Paul, sitting in a jail cell writes,
“I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. I have the strength to face all conditions by the power Christ gives me.” Phil 4:12,13 (GN)
Listen – The Bible says that contentment is a learned behavior. And part of that learning is for us to bring the proper perspective to life.
Snoopy, one time, was sitting on top of his doghouse, and it’s Thanksgiving. He’s bitter in his spirit because Charlie Brown and the family are having this huge feast inside their house, but Snoopy is stuck on his doghouse with only dog food. And he’s kind of grousing about that until this thought occurs to him, and he says to himself, "It could be worse. I could have been born a turkey."
Now, I want to ask you to remember that little phrase,
Okay, when you leave this room, you’re going to go out in the parking lot and get in whatever vehicle you drove here in. And you’re going to be tempted to think, "If I just had another car, a nicer car, a new car, a bigger car, a more expensive car, I’d be content," because we get bombarded with that message all the time.
But today, you’re not going to think that. Instead, today, you’re going to open the door of your car, get inside, and say to yourself with great passion and conviction – stay with me, friends. "IT COULD BE WORSE," Because it could be. It is for a lot of people.
And when you drive that car to wherever you live–your apartment, your house, you’re going to be tempted to think, when you walk inside the door, "I’d be content if I just had a newer house, nicer house, bigger house, better house," because we’re bombarded with that message all the time, but not today. Today, when you come to the door, before you step across that threshold, you’re going to stop and you’re going to say to yourself with great passion, "IT COULD BE WORSE," Because it could be.
Tomorrow morning, when you wake up and you roll over and you look at your spouse, you’re going to say… Nah let’s not go there. Listen - one way we learn contentment is by having the proper perspective… I love this prayer found in Proverbs 30;
O God, I beg two favors from you before I die. 8First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. 9For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, "Who is the LORD?" And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name. Proverbs 30:7-9 (NLT)
Yet true religion with contentment is great wealth. 7After all, we didn’t bring anything with us when we came into the world, and we certainly cannot carry anything with us when we die. 8So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. 1 Tim 6:6-8
By the way Jesus was content and he didn’t have a lot of stuff…he told a guy one time who wanted to follow him…that foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests but the Son of man has nowhere to lay is head…
LISTEN - when we move from fear to confidence/grumbling to gratitude/form selfishness to generosity/from troubled to trusting/from greed to contentment… We will also move…
From Living To Life…
LISTEN - when we move from fear to confidence/grumbling to gratitude/form selfishness to generosity/from troubled to trusting/from greed to contentment… We will also move from living to life…
Jesus says we are to pray; “Give us this day our daily bread..” Circle – this day; daily…
UNDERSTAND – 2 awesome things happen when we come to God each day – with our daily needs…
#1; he meets those needs – he gives us the bread we need…
#2; we meet with Him… we get connected to something more important then bread…
Moses said in Dt 8:3;
“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
QUESTION – could God have given them a months supply of bread at a time? SURE – [he could have even given each Jew and AMM machine in their tent – (automatic manna machine) but more important than the manna was that everyday they were reminded in a powerful way to meet with God..
When Jesus said the word bread in the disciples prayer I am sure that the 12 thought about the manna in the wilderness – BUT even more so – they thought about those 2 incredible days we read about in John 6 (The bread chapter of the bible)
The multiplying of bread and feeding 5,000…
The teaching about Him being the bread of life…
1,000 leaving because they were seeking Jesus’ hands (feed me…give us an AMM machine) and not his face…
“The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (33)
“I am the bread of life no one who comes to me ever be hungry again. Those who believe in me will never be thirsty.” (35)
“Yes,I am the bread of life! Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died…I a the living bread that came down out of heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever…” (48ff)
LISTEN in the end
It is NOT really about – bread/our earthly needs….
