Intro:
Matthew 27: 36 “And sitting down they watched him there;”
Death by crucifixion was a long process that took time. That is the reason why it was so painful. A slow death to say the least. During that time the soldiers responsibility was to watch the victims. They had to watch over them, a hard job indeed, but it had to be done. That was their job. Sometimes the soldiers had to literally watch in shifts those being crucified, for it took days sometimes for the person to die.
I submit to you today: Though they watched Jesus die a slow death, did they really see and know what they were seeing? Did they really know what they were watching on that horrible day when God’s Son hung between earth and heaven? If they only knew who Jesus truly was. These men that watched Jesus only saw a cruel painful death of a man on a cross, but there was more that the eye could see. They were blind in watching and deem in seeing the true Son of God that Day when all earth shook and time stood still. They were blind watchers on that day when Christ freed man of sin and redeemed him back to God.
If they could have seen Christ in his true personage, I believe they would of seen him has
1. The redeemer of the human race.
Christ came to redeem man back to God. To give man hope in a hopeless world.
Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Second, they would have seen Christ as,
2. The high priest unto all men.
Christ came to redeem and to be our high priest and intercede on our behalf before God.
Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
Finally, If the soldiers truly saw Christ of who he really was, they would have seen him as,
3. The soon coming King.
Matthew 26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Mark 13:26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
Mark 14:62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Conclusion:
Are your eyes open to who Christ really is? Can you see him in his power and might? Let Christ reign in you and open your blind eyes to see the glory of God.
