They led Jesus therefore from Caiphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
INTRODUCTION
Give brief history of Passover and why it was instituted.
Exodus 12:1-2 & 14
Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, "This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you.
’Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance.
Passover was undoubtedly observed during the time of Samuel and in the reigns of David and Solomon, and occasionally after the united kingdom divided; on the whole, however, the Word of God was not in the Israelites during most of that period, so they were not seeking to follow God’s commandments concerning Passover or anything else. But then their hearts were stirred by revival.
The writer of 2 Chronicles tells of two such revivals and the Passover celebrations that immediately followed. One happened in the reign of King Hezekiah and the other during the reign of King Josiah.
II Kings 23:22 records that after Joshua’s death, from the time of the Judges until the time of the several reforms in the kingdom of Judah, there had not been such a great Passover observance. The people, who once had heard God’s thundering voice from the holy mountain, had listened to the voice of temptation and had fallen into idolatry.
Throughout the history of the children of Israel, the Passover celebration, or the neglect of it, stood out as a thermometer indicating the Jewish community’s spiritual condition.
PASSOVER IN THE TIME OF CHRIST
Devout Jews poured in from distant corners of the world to worship Jehovah in the mountain of His holiness.
Local Jews came 3 times a year: Passover, Pentecost, the Feast of Booths. But for many who lived very far from Jerusalem, the lengthy pilgrimage at Passover was the fulfillment of a once-in-a-lifetime dream.
Weeks before the holiday, trickles began--and soon the stream became a river. “as the deer panteth after the water brooks, so my souls panteth after thee. (Ps. 42:1)
Permanent residents in the Jerusalem that Jesus knew = 600,000.
A conservative estimate of the vast multitude of Passover pilgrims is about 2,000,000 who swelled the city’s pop. to almost 4 x’s its normal size!!
They would clean their homes inside and out. They even prepared the cemetaries by white washing the tombs. Thus we get the meaning to Jesus’ rebuke to the Pharisees (Matthew 23:27-28)
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. "Even so you too outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
TRANSITION: How can we get to the point that we, like the Pharisees, miss what God wants to do in our lives?
I. HAVE YOU SETTLED FOR BONDAGE WHEN YOU COULD INVITE BREAKTHROUGH? (Decorations on Party/Red Cloth on Cross)

B. Deliverance through the Blood of the Lamb
Exodus 12:22-23
"And you shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning. "For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you.
C. Jesus is the Door for your Deliverance
John 10:7-9
Jesus therefore said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. "All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
TRANSITION - What are some key ingredients for a successful party or life?
The first step is to never settle for bondage in your life (point to decorations) when you can invite breakthrough (Point to red clot on cross)
II. ARE YOU DECEIVED WITH EMPTINESS OR DO YOU CRAVE EMPOWERMENT? (Cake / Crown of Thorns)
Exodus 12:11
’Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste-- it is the LORD’S Passover.
A. Eating of the lamb brought strength for the journey that lay ahead
B. Ate in readiness for the task
C. Our Power for Service can come only through the Person of Jesus Christ, not in our own pretty efforts

4. Knowledge, Leadership
D. Obedience requires sacrifice
Isaiah 1:11-13
"What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?" Says the LORD. "I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams, And the fat of fed cattle. And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats. 12 "When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts? "Bring your worthless offerings no longer,
(vv. 16-19)
"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil,
Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless; Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow. "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. "If you consent and obey, You will eat the best of the land;
Psalm 51:16-17
For Thou dost not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; Thou art not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.
1. The Israelites were obedient to God’s commands. In order to have complete deliverance, they had to follow His directions exactly.
TRANSITION - What are some key ingredients for a successful party or life?
First remember never to settle for bondage in your life when you can invite breakthrough and Second, don’t be deceived with Emptiness (Point to cake) when you can have Empowerment! (Point to crown of thorns) and finally to have a successful party you have to ask yourself.
III. DO I WANT THE SAFETY OF RELIGION OR THE RISK OF RELATIONSHIP? (Cards and Presents / Bible)
A. Lamb was chosen and lived with the family 4 days before it was sacrificed.
1. (Relationship was established)
B. The religious leaders were more concerned with their agenda than with God’s agenda.
C. When all was said and done, Jesus gave himself, no one took his life.
1. Jesus was a true sacrifice, not a martyr!
John 19:30
When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.
