Psalm 40:1-3
Topic: A New Song
King David was one of God’s servants in the Old Testament, and was the most successful kings out of all the kings in Israel. He was also a man who enjoyed playing music. As a little boy, King David would play upon his harp while he tended his sheep in the fields. And later in life when David grew older, David played the harp so well that it quieted the weary soul of King Saul as David played his melodies on his harp in the royal palace.
But not all of King David’s life experiences were rosy and sweet. Like many of us as children of God, King David experienced some times of difficulties, oppositions, and turmoil.
In Psalm 40,King David tells us some of his times when he experienced difficulties, oppositions, and turmoil. And at the same time, King David testifies about how good God has been to him, and how God had delivered him and gave him the victory over his difficulties, opposition and turmoil.
King David says in Psalm 40:1-3, “I waited patiently for the Lord and he inclined unto me and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God; many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the Lord.”
Now notice what King David says in Psalm 40:3, which he says, “And he hath put a new song in my mouth.” To have a personal relationship with God is to have a new song in your heart. You see, salvation and song are inseparable because the joy of the Lord generates music in the soul. When a person is in fellowship with the Lord through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that person has a new song to praise the Lord.
Psalm 33:3 say to, “Sing unto him a new song: play skillfully with a loud noise.”
Psalm 96:1 says, “O sing unto the Lord a new
song; sing un to the Lord all the earth.”
Psalm 98:1 says, “O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: his right hand,, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
Psalm 144:9 says, “I will sing a new song unto thee O God; upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.”
Psalm 149:1 says, “Praise ye the Lord, sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praises in the congregation of saints.”
Isaiah 42:10 says, “Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea and all that is therein; the isle and the inhabitants thereof.”
A new song from God is a song of praise to praise the Lord because God is worthy to be praised. Now in Psalm 40, David expressed his gratitude to the Lord for delivering him out of a horrible pit, and out of miry clay. And because God delivered David from danger, David could sing a new song to praise God.
And if God has delivered you from the horrible pit of sin, and delivered you from the miry clay of turmoil, sickness, and trouble, you need to praise God with a new song. And a new song unto the Lord is a joyful song because in Psalm 100:1 says,
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” When you make a joyful noise unto the Lord, you are telling the Lord that you are so glad and happy that he has blessed you with so many good things.
Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Because God mercies are new every morning, we ought to praise God everyday with new song of praise.
Now notice something unique about David’s new song in Psalm 40:3. David says this about his new song. He says, “many shall see it and fear, and trust in the Lord.”
You see, the purpose of David’s new song was not only to give God the glory, but to lead people to fear and trust in the Lord. His new song was not for entertainment, but a ministry and a witness to others about the goodness of the Lord. In other words, the new song is not just a song of praise, but a song of testimony. Also David’s new song from the Lord was a blessing to others. David did not keep his new song to himself. Yes, David sang his new song aloud for others to hear it, but David did more than just sing his new song. David made his new song visible for everyone to see it.
Now the question is, “How do you make a song visible for everyone to see it? Do you have to show everyone the notes and the lyrics of the song so the people can see the song?” The answer is No.
What David meant by “many shall see” his new song was that his new song would be an echo that would sound off in his heart which would cause the
new song to be visible to be seen. In other words, David would become the new song that God gave him. His life would be a testimony of how good God is.
And that is God purpose for your life. God wants not only to give you a new song to sing, but he wants to make you a new song to be seen. In other words, God wants us to live our lives as a testimony (a new song) to others in such a way that they will see the light of Jesus Christ shinning in our lives. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Now you are probably asking yourself, “How do I become a new song to be a testimony that God has worked a miracle in my life? The answer is by becoming a new creature in Christ.
2nd Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things become as new.”
To become a new creature in Christ, you must repent of your sins and receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. You must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins, and in three days, he rose from the dead with all power in his hands.
Acts 16:31 says to, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 says, “If thou shalt confess with thou mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
I John 5:11-13 says, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life. And he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life; and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
To be able to sing a new song to the Lord, and to be a new song to be seen by others, you must become a new person, and you become a new person by becoming a new creature in Christ, and you are a new creature in Christ when you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
