PARTICIPATING IN THE NEW COVENANT
Matthew 26:26-30
TEXT: And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 "For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Fa-ther’s kingdom." 30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
PROPOSITION: To motivate the hearer to actively participate the New Covenant of God by seek Him for the needs in their lives.
INTRODUCTION:
I. JESUS’ BLOOD WAS SHED FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST ACCEPT THAT FORGIVENESS
1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
Titus 2:11
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
Application: When Jesus died on the cross He died for the sins of all man-kind for all time. He gave Himself as the final sacrifice. Every person you know has the same opportunity that you do to receive forgiveness of their sin and to be found holy and blameless before God. But it is only those who ask for forgiveness that receive it.
1 John 1:8,9 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
II. JESUS’ BODY WAS BROKEN FOR MY HEALING, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST SEEK THE HEALING PROVIDED BY HIS SACRIFICE
James 5:14,15 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Matthew 8:16-17 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses."
Isaiah 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
III. JESUS SUFFERED CHASTISEMENT SO THAT I COULD HAVE PEACE, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST SEEK HIS PEACE
Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniqui-ties; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Matthew 11:28 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
IV. JESUS GAVE HIMSELF IN DEATH SO THAT I MIGHT HAVE LIFE, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST RECEIVE THE LIFE HE GIVES
John 7:37,38 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
John 10:10 "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 5:39 "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 "But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
V. JESUS GAVE HIMSELF TO PURCHASE ME FROM THE POWER SIN, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST SEEK THIS DELIVERANCE
Hebrews 13:12,13 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate. 13 Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach.
Hebrews 10:10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 8:10-12 "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Ezekiel 36:26-27 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
VI. JESUS’ LIFE, DEATH, AND RESURRECTION, WERE SO THAT I COULD PARTICIPATE IN THE NEW COVENANT WITH HIM, BUT IT IS I WHO MUST MAKE THE DECISION TO PARTICIPATE
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
