Sing: His name is wonderful
Background: The third commandment concerns using God’s name in any manner that is irreverent or cheap. We need to define our terminology: Misusing God’s name(NIV) Name in Vain (KJV) -- Enjoining God’s name in an oath when you have no intention of keeping your vow. Or using God’s name in a flippant irreverent manner is taking it in vain. In prayer “Oh God, Jesus or Lord” is wonderful, but when you use the phrase to add emphasis it breaks the third C.
Cursing -- ”Cursing“ does not refer to improper speech as such, but to calling down a curse on another. Wishing someone in Hell -- “Damn you”. e.g. Balaam
Crude language is using unacceptable words to make a point or add emphasis to your speech. Social acceptance changes
Words that describe body waste are crude in our culture, but “Pisseth against the wall” is a homonym for the males in - KJV
The “F” word is legal shorthand for the word Fornication.
Reference to body parts is also crude, but subject to culture.
Blasphemy: Results from a heart so out of balance that right seems wrong, and wrong right. Job’s wife, when she exhorted Job to curse God and die, Job 2:9. Peter, when accused of being a disciple of Jesus,
Slang: Thinly disguised euphemisms, e.g. “Dang, or darn, Burden: Our language is a window into our hearts.
Basic Truth: A clean heart equals clean language
Big Question How can I keep my language clean?
Remember who you are You are the Temple of the Lord
1 Cor. 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
One of the most humbling experiences is when a small child calls me Jesus. You are a vessel that contains the very life of God. You are valuable and loved and ambassador of your Lord. Talk like a child of God.
Remember your testimony Rom 14:21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.
Christian’s who act one way on Sunday and another on Monday hurt the Kingdom.
Remember God hears every word
Romans 14:12So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God
Peter’s denial was heard by Jesus
Our words will judge us. Chose them well.
Remember the blood of Jesus His blood was shed to cover your sin.
1 Cor 15:3 that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,:4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
The dog was killed so his trail of blood would lead home
It required the suffering of the Savior to cover my bad language
What do I want us to know?
We are to Keep God’s name holy and your testimony strong by the way we communicate.
What do I want us to do?
Grow a clean heart, and your mouth will follow
