JESUS - SAVIOUR

Matthew 1 v. 18 - 25

v. 21 "Thou shalt call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins." Notice :-

Joseph’s Discovery.v. 18 Mary was "found with child"

Joseph’s Dilemma v. 19 - He could divorce her publicly (stoning) or privately - (his intention)

Joseph’s Dream v. 20 Angel shared :-

(a) The nature of this child "of the Holy Ghost" He was divinely conceived and humanly born - Son of God yet born of woman.

(b) The name of this child v 21 "Jesus" - "Jehovah is Saviour"

(c) The need for this child v 21 "He shall save His people from their sins" Notice:-

1. Salvation is a personal work v 21 "He shall save" Note:-

(a) Who saves? Jesus - "Salvation is of the Lord" He promised it, purchased it, and provides it.

(b) Who He saves? ’His people’ - those who hear Him ’My sheep hear my voice’ those who come to Him, "Come" - those who trust Him, those who confess Him Romans 10 v, 9 , those who follow Him

(c) What He saves from? "from their sins" Why -

sin defiles "we are all as an unclean thing"

Sin deceives "Be not deceived"

sin destroys :-Sin has made:-

1. man a transgressor Romans 3 v, 23 "For all have sinned"

2. Satan a tyrant Hebrews 2 v. 14 "That through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is, the devil"

3 Christ a sufferer 1 Peter 3 v. 18 "For Christ hath once suffered, the just for the unjust ..."

4. Earth a wilderness Romans 8 v. 22 "whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain"

5. punishment a necessity Matthew 25 v. 46 "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment"

6. hell a reality Luke 16 v. 23 "And in hell"

7. salvation a priority "seek ye first"

2. Salvation is a peculiar work v21"He shall save"

Acts 4 v. 12 "Neither is there salvation in any other" -

Salvation is found only in one place (Calvary),only through one person (Lord), and only for one price (repentance & faith)

3. Salvation is a positive work v21 "He shall save":-

His Divine Nature - means He can save,

His Declared Name -means He will save,

His Distinct Nobility - means He must save John 6 v. 37 "Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out"

4. Salvation is a powerful work v. 21 "from their sins"

From the:-

(a) penalty of sin through the blood

(b) power of sin through the Holy Spirit in the heart

(c) presence of sin - by taking us home to heaven

(d) paralysis of sin, by the power to fulfil God’s will

5. Salvation is a practical work v. 21 "His people only"

Jesus only saves:-

(a) Those who need to be saved

"I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" -

"I am come to seek and to save that which was lost" not all recognise their need of salvation

(b) Those who want to be saved "whosoever shall call upon the name of the lord" some are too happy, too busy, too anxious, too old, too ill, too late, to think about Christ

(c) Those who come to be saved "Come now and let us reason together saith the Lord."

Augustine "He who created us without our help, will not save us without our consent.
