"THE COMING OF CHRIST,
THE STORY OF THE BIBLE"
THE BIBLE CAME TO US FROM GOD -- "ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD BREATHED..." "NO PROPHECY OF SCRIPTURE CAME ABOUT BY THE PROPHETS OWN INTERPRETATION. FOR PROPHECY NEVER HAD ITS ORIGIN IN THE WILL OF MAN BUT MEN SPOKE FROM GOD AS THEY WERE CARRIED ALONG BY THE HOLY SPIRIT...." 1 PETER 1:20,21
THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN BY OVER 40 MEN CHOSEN BY GOD, IT WAS WRITTEN OVER A SPAN OF 1400 YEARS, IN 3 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES BY MEN LIVING ON 3 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS...
DESPITE CONTAINING DIFFICULT NAMES, STRANGE PLACES, ARCHAIC LANGUAGE, WEIRD CUSTOMS AND A DIFFERENT LITERALLY STYLE THE BIBLE HAS HAD IMMENSE POPULARITY FOR 1,000 OF YEARS...
THE BIBLE WAS THE FIRST BOOK EVER TO BE TRANSLATED INTO ANOTHER LANGUAGE -- THE LXX IN 250 BC....
THE BIBLE IS ALSO THE MOST TRANSLATED BOOK ---
THE ENTIRE BIBLE IS TRANSLATED INTO 270 LANGUAGES (90% OF WORLD’S POPULATIONS).
THE NEW TESTAMENT IS TRANSLATED INTO AN ADDITIONAL 500 LANGUAGES (5% OF WORLD’S POPULATION)....
AND SELECTED BOOKS TRANSLATED INTO AN ADDITIONAL 993 LANGUAGES (3% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION)...
THE BIBLE IS THE MOST PRINTED BOOK IN HISTORY FROM 1815-1985 OVER 2.5 BILLION COPIES WERE PRINTED AND ABOUT 22 MILLION ARE PRINTED EVERY YEAR...
THE BIBLE CONTAINS 773,692 WORDS; THE ENTIRE BIBLE COULD READ IN 1 YEAR IF YOU READ ~28 MINUTES A DAY.... THE NEW TESTAMENT COULD BE READ IN A YEAR IF YOU READ ~31/2 MINUTES A DAY.
THE BIBLE IS AN AMAZING BOOK -- NO OTHER BOOK IN THE WORLD COMPARES TO IT....
YET SADLY THE BIBLE IS PROBABLY THE MOST NEGLECTED BOOK.... THE BOOK THAT MANY HAVE, BUT FEW "REALLY" READ.
THE STORY IS TOLD OF A PREACHER WHO CAME OVER VISIT UNEXPECTEDLY. WANTING TO MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION, THE LADY OF THE HOUSE SAID TO HER LITTLE DAUGHTER, "PLEASE RUN AND GET THE GOOD BOOK WE ALL LOVE SO MUCH AND BRING IT HERE.."
THE DAUGHTER TOTTERED OFF AND THEN RETURNED IN A MINUTE WITH A TRIUMPHANT LOOK ON HER FACE AND THE SEARS CATALOGUE IN HER HANDS!
WHY DO MANY NOT READ THE BIBLE -- WELL, SOME JUST DON’T WANT TO... BUT MANY OTHERS I THINK DON’T READ IT BECAUSE IT SEEMS SO INTIMIDATING.... WHERE DO I START? HOW DOES IT ALL FIT TOGETHER? TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE AND MANY OTHER DETAILED THINGS IN LIFE IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THE BIG PICTURE... AND WE FIND THAT ONCE WE UNDERSTAND THE BIG PICTURE THEN DETAILED THINGS ARE MUCH EASIER TO UNDERSTAND...
DOES THE BIBLE HAVE A "BIG PICTURE" IT CERTAINLY DOES, YOU SEE THOUGH THE BIBLE HAS 66 DIFFERENT BOOKS -- IT IS REALLY ONLY 3 CHAPTERS.... ALL REVOLVING AROUND 1 CENTRAL AND POWERFUL THEME
THE COMING OF CHRIST
The Bible is God’s Word and it is exciting, it is emotional, it’s pages are full of anticipation, because the message of the Bible is the coming of Christ.
Today, we are going to survey the entire bible and watch it’s great message unfold.
And as we do, our hearts will beat with Adam, Abraham, Isaiah and all those of the OT, as we anticipate the coming of Christ our Redeemer. And our anticipation will turn to realization, in the Gospels as we sit with the disciples at the feet of Jesus. Then we will join with all those who are in Christ, who eagerly wait his coming again.... to take us home to those glorious mansion in heaven. THE BIBLE IS THE STORY OF THE COMING OF CHRIST!!
I. THE MESSAGE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IS CHRIST IS COMING!
IN GENESIS HIS COMING IS REVEALED
The reason I say that Christ coming is revealed in Genesis is because Christ coming was planned before Genesis. In Revelation 13:8 we read that Christ was slain before creation. Before God created the world, before he create man - God already had planned on sending Christ. Christ crucifiction on the cross was God’s idea before the beginning -- (and not a mistake as many end time prophets of today believe).
In the beginning God created the World and everything in it. He created Adam and Eve, and put them in charge of the garden. Adam and Eve lived in a garden paradise -- they had an intimate and close relationship with God, as God walked with them in the Garden. They had only one restriction, one command -- And that was not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Well you know the rest of the story -- they were tempted and deceived by Satan who appeared to them in the form of a serpent, they blew it -- they disobeyed God -- they sinned.
And in Genesis 3:15 we find what many call, "the Gospel in the garden." Gen 3:15
Even though man had turned his back on God and sinned -- God did not turn his back on them...like we read in II Samuel 14:14, "GOD DOES NOT TAKE AWAY LIFE; INSTEAD, HE Devises WAYS SO THAT A BANISHED PERSON MAY NOT REMAIN ESTRANGED FROM HIM." AND THAT IS THE REASON FOR CHRIST’S COMING. TO BRING MANKIND BACK INTO A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD...
In Genesis 3:15, God reveals 3 things:
a. That Satan would ultimately be crushed
b. The agent of this crushing would come through the seed of woman.
c. The victory over Satan would only be possible through suffering On the part of the crusher (heel bruised).
GEN 9:27
And for centuries Gen 3:15 was the only star of hope that God’s people had, and they clung to it ever so tightly.
Then after the flood, in Gen 9:26,27, God gives Noah another star of hope -- As God reveals that one day God, He would come down and dwell in the tents of men. He would live and walk among mankind..
And a little over 2,000 years before Christ’s birth, God called Abraham (to leave his homeland, his family and be god’s people), we read of this in Gen 12. In this call God reveals that a descendent of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob’s, would one day bless all of the nations of the earth. That descendent is Jesus.
And as God’s first book to his people nears it’s end, God reveals that one day a rest bringer would come from the royal line of Judah....
God declares that many will give their allegiance to this Rest Bringer...and that he will bring about a time of great abundance, rest and blessings....
IN GENESIS THE COMING OF CHRIST IS REVEALED....
FROM EXODUS TO ESTHER WE READ OF THE PREPARATIONS MADE FOR CHRIST’S COMING
IN THESE BOOKS GOD PREPARES HIS PEOPLE FOR CHRIST’S COMING IN 4 WAYS:
First He prepares them by delivering them
God’s people had become slaves in Egypt.. And while in those shackles they were taught that they needed a deliverer (that they could not free themselves)... And it was God himself who would be that deliverer.... He worked mighty miracles (hail, frogs, nile to blood, death of Egyptian 1st born, parting of Red Sea)..through his servant Moses, bringing mighty Pharaoh to his knees -- delivering His people -- winning their freedom.
God further prepared His people by giving them His law
Because God had delivered them... the Israelites were not there own... And God therefore had the right and He had the power to expect something from them... And God prepared His people (by teaching them about sin, obedience and His Holiness) as His servant Moses brought down from thundering Mt. Sinai the laws and commandments of God.
God also prepared His people by fulfilling His promise
In Joshua we read of God’s new leader Joshua conquering Canaan and establishing God’s people in the land that God had promised to their father Abraham over 700 years earlier. God in doing this was teaching them that he is one who keeps his promises.
And lastly in these books, God further prepared His people by establishing the Royal Throne of David
Through whose blood line the true King (Jesus Christ) would one day come.
God prepared his people: He taught them that they needed a deliverer, that God requires obedience, that God keeps His promises and that A True King is coming.
AND IN THE POETS WE SEE GOD’S PEOPLE LONGING FOR CHRIST’S COMING WITH ASPIRATION
In the Book of Proverbs the aspiration is for perfect wisdom to be incarnate, THIS WISDOM IS FOUND ONLY IN CHRIST.
In Ecclesiastes Solomon exposes the futility of life without God. He tried women, wine and wealth and came up empty. Solomon discovered that true meaning and true happiness was not to be found in anything under the s.u.n. But rather, it was to be found beyond the things under the sun, and in the person of the SON --THE SON OF GOD, Jesus Christ..
In the Song of Solomon , Solomon aspires for perfect love and commitment -- which is found only in Christ.
And in Job and Psalms we have many direct references to the coming of Christ.
JOB; longed for a divine mediator between him and God. And he looked forward to the coming of his redeemer. He says in Job 19:24, "I Know My Redeemer Lives!!"
David the psalmist longed for the coming of:
GOD’S GLORIOUS SON (PS 2)
THE DAVIDIC KING (PS 89)
THE GREAT PARABLE TELLER (PS 78)
CHRIST, THE TRAILBLAZER (PS16)
THE ROYAL PRIEST (PS 110)
DAVID AND THE OTHER POETS LONGED FOR THE GLORIOUS REIGN OF THE MESSIAH.
AND THE FINAL SECTION OF THE OLD Testament IS THE MAJOR and minor prophets (17 books in all) -- AND THE PROPHETS LOOKED TO THE FUTURE WITH THE EXPECTATION OF HIS COMING
The OT prophets lived during a time when God’s people, had turned their back’s on God and His Word and bowed down and worship false gods. The people and the leaders were rotten and decaying both spiritually and morally. Wrong had now become right... and God was reduced to a distant far off deity and worship had become nothing more than heartless religion.
Justice, was nowhere to be found and the poor were greatly oppressed. And This growing corruption would eventually lead to the dividing of the Kingdom... And the fall of Israel and Judah, as God judged the nation with the sword of foreign conquers (Assyria/Babylon). And the once mighty Kingdom was no more.
It was during these perilous and ungodly times, that the Prophets lived (in the midst of a society that was coming apart at the seams both morally and spiritually) Therefore they looked forward to, and they clung to, with an unwavering hope the coming of a New and Better Kingdom.
Isaiah writes in the 11th chapter of a Kingdom that would be united in peace and harmony and would include all people.
And it would be a righteous Kingdom, listen to Is 32:1,2:
"SEE, A KING WILL REIGN IN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND RULERS WILL RULE WITH JUSTICE. A MAN WILL BE LIKE A SHELTER FROM THE WIND AND A REFUSE FROM THE STORM, LIKE STREAMS OF WATER IN A DESERT AND THE SHADOWS OF A GREAT ROCK IN A THIRSTY LAND."
It will be a rule of peace: "HE WILL PROCLAIM PEACE TO THE NATIONS. HIS RULE WILL EXTEND FROM SEA TO SEA AND FROM THE RIVERS TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH." (Zech 9:10)
And Isaiah in the 53rd chapter of his book looked forward to the Coming of Christ and the healing he would bring:
"HE HAD NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US TO HIM, NOTHING IN HIS APPEARANCE THAT WE SHOULD DESIRE HIM HE WAS DESPISED AND REJECTED BY MAN, A MAN OF SORROWS, AND FAMILIAR WITH SUFFERING. LIKE ONE FROM WHOM MAN HIDE THEIR FACES HE WAS DESPISED AND WE ESTEEMED HIM NOT. SURELY HE TOOK UP OUR INFIRMITIES AND CARRIED OUR SORROWS... HE WAS PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, HE WAS CRUSHED FOR OUR INIQUITIES.. THE PUNISHMENT THAT BROUGHT US PEACE WAS UPON HIM, AND BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED."(IS 53:2-5)
The prophets looked forward to a time when Christ would come and heal the deep and deadly wounds of sin... And as Jeremiah writes in Jeremiah 31:31ff they looked forward to a new and better relationship/a new and better covenant with God.
JEREMIAH 31:31-34
THE MESSAGE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IS CHRIST IS COMING
CHRIST IS HERE! IS THE MESSAGE OF THE GOSPELS
The plane touches down on the run way.
The last line is thrown form the ship to the pier.
The car pulls into the drive way.
All the energy and emotion of anticipation now shifts to an eruption of ferverent joy.
The band is playing -- The Cameras flashing -- The flags are waving....
A Husband embraces his wife -- A teary eyed dad holds his little girl has never seen... A mother hugs her son who has become a man...
We have all felt these emotions, the joy can be overwhelming.. The wait is over.. they one we’ve been looking for, our loved one is here!!
"AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND MADE HIS DWELLING AMONG US. WE HAVE SEEN HIS GLORY, THE GLORY OF THE ONE AND ONLY, WHO CAME FROM THE FATHER, FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH."
CHRIST IS HERE!! THE KING HAS COME!! THIS IS THE MESSAGE OF THE GOSPELS.
BIRTH
The wait that began 1,000’s of years ago in the garden was over! The crusher had come, the Savior was here!
And a great company of angels appeared in the fields outside of Bethlehem praising God and saying;
"GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST AND ON EARTH PEACE TO MEN ON HIM HIS FAVOR RESTS" as baby Jesus lay in the arms of His mother..
MINISTRY
And the baby grew and became a boy. He laughed, he ran, he played with his friends, wrestled w/his brothers and worked with his dad in the carpenters shop.
And at the age of 12 he sat down at the temple among the teachers listening and asking them questions, "EVERYONE WHO HEARD HIM WAS AMAZED AT HIS UNDERSTANDING AND HIS ANSWERS." (LK 2:47)
And the boy grew to be a man and scripture says he , "GREW IN WISDOM, AND STATURE AND IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND MAN."
And At the age of 30 Jesus began his ministry: and what a ministry it was:
HE HEALED:THE BLIND, THE LAME, THE LEPERS AND HE RAISED THE DEAD...
HE: CHANGED WATER INTO WINE, CALMED VIOLENT STORMS AND MULTIPLIED FOOD (5000+ 5 LOAVES, 2 FISH).
HE SPOKE WITH: AUTHORITY/ AND WITH INSIGHT INTO THE HEARTS OF MAN >>> JESUS SPOKE WORDS: OF WISDOM/TRUTH/LIFE/HOPE & JUDGMENT.
One time when some temple guards were sent to arrest Jesus and bring him back to the chief priests, they came back empty handed. And the only response they could offer for the failure was: "NO ONE EVER SPOKE WORDS THE WAY THIS MAN DOES." (still true today)
DEATH
True no one ever spoke the way Jesus did, and no one ever died the way Jesus died.
Betrayed by a friend.. Abandoned by His disciples.. Put through a mock trail.. Beaten.. Spit upon.. Laughed at... Scourged .. weak and bleeding.. forced to carry His own cross... Huge spikes driven into His hands and feet. Yet, on the cross Jesus still thought of others -- His mother Mary.. and even His enemies "FATHER FORGIVE THEM.."
He was innocent -- the Jewish leaders knew it -- Pilate knew it -- Yet, Jesus did nothing -- said nothing to free himself...
HE COULD HAVE CALLED 10,000 ANGELS TO DESTROY THE WORLD AND SET HIM FREE, HE COULD,HAVE CALLED 10,000 ANGELS BUT HE DIED ALONE (EVEN GOD TURNED HIS BACK) FOR YOU AND ME."
"WHEN THE CENTURION AND THOSE WITH HIM WHO WERE UARDING JESUS SAW THE EARTHQUAKE AND ALL THAT HAPPENED, THEY WERE TERRIFIED AND EXCLAIMED, SURELY HE WAS THE SON OF GOD."
Jesus died and was buried in a borrowed tomb.. And on the 3rd day he rose from the dead appearing to the disciples and 500 others over a period of 40 days ... Jesus is alive!! The tomb is empty death could not hold our King,,,
And those who are in Christ will likewise rise to be with him for eternity in Heaven.
THE VICTORY HAS BEEN WON THE SERPENT IS CRUSHED! (DEATH HAS BEEN DESTROYED!)
CHRIST IS COMING AGAIN!! IS THE MESSAGE OF THE REST OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Jesus, the Risen Lord was with his disciples for the last time. He told them they would be His witness from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.
ACTS 1:9-11
THROUGHOUT THE BOOK OF ACTS AND THE LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES, GOD’S PEOPLE ( including us) LOOK FORWARD TO HIS COMING AGAIN!
Paul in writing to the Church at Phillpi writes in [PHIL 3:20,21]
"OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN. AND WE EAGERLY AWAIT A SAVIOR From THERE, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, WHO, BY THE POWER THE ENABLES HIM TO BRING EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL,, WILL TRANSFORM OUR LOWLY BODIES SO THEY WILL BE LIKE HIS GLORIOUS BODY.."
The church (us), look forward to the day when Christ will return. To the Day, when our weak bodies will be transformed into glorious bodies THAT WILL LIVE FOR EVER IN GOD’S PRESENCE. TO THE TIME WHEN EVERY TEAR WILL BE DRIED; EVERY SORROW ENDED AND EVERY PAIN AND DISEASED ERASED FOR ETERNITY...
In Col 3:4 Paul writes;
"WHEN CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE APPEARS THEN YOU WILL ALSO APPEAR WITH HIM IN GLORY"
N I PETER 5:4
"AND WHEN THE CHIEF SHEPHERD APPEARS YOU WILL RECEIVE THE CROWN OF GLORY THAT WILL NEVER FADE AWAY."
And John exhorts us in I John 2:28;
AND NOW, DEAR CHILDREN, CONTINUE IN HIM, SO THAT WHEN HE APPEARS WE MAY BE CONFIDENT AND UNASHAMED BEFORE HIM AT HIS COMING."
We like they, should find it comforting and encouraging as we live in a rough and some times very wicked world -- to set our sights on the future glory that awaits God’s people... this world is not our home we’re just passing through Jesus christ is coming again!!!
AND FINALLY IN REVELATION, CHRIST’S COMING IS REALIZED, AS GOD UNVEILS FOR THE APOSTLE JOHN, WHAT CHRIST RETURN WILL BE LIKE. That’s what the word revelation means -- it is an unveiling of the Lord Jesus Christ in all His glory... God pulls back the curtain and allows us to see the Glory of Jesus.
AND One thing becomes evident as the curtain is pulled back -- when christ comes again (and he will) it will not be like his first coming... Where he was : mocked, beaten, spit upon, pushed, shoved and crucified on a cross -- clothed only in the precious blood that poured form his suffering body.
Men will not: beat Him anymore
mock Him anymore
do anything to him anymore
When Christ return on a greta white horse, he will return in glory and will be clothed in power... and all the earth will see Him (and on his robe and thigh he will have this name written KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. His eyes will be like a blazing fire and on His head will be many crowns -- and following all riding white horse and clothed in white linen will be all the armies of heaven...
And every knee in heaven and on earth will bow down and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
And those who have rejected him, who have mocked and ridiculed Him.... WHO HAVE IN LIFE REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIS LORDSHIP. Be they kings, princess, generals, rich or poor, they will hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains And they will call to the rocks and the mountains, "FALL ON US AND HIDE US FROM HIM WHO SITS ON THE THRONE AND FROM THE WRATH OF THE LAMB! FOR THE GREAT DAY OF THEIR WRATH HAS COME, AND WHO CAN STAND?"
Those who have rejected Him will mourn because they now know the fate that they have chosen (eternal death/punishment).
But the righteous will rejoice, Listen to [Rev 19:6-7]. and hear the words of Rev 21:22-22:7.
BEHOLD I AM COMING SOON!!!
