Go Therefore, and Make Disciples

INTRODUCTION
Good Morning
What I originally thought about speaking of was a little different (in light of Halloween), but...
One of my beliefs (use Halloween as an example)
Holy living vs. looking at sin
What you should do vs. what you should not do
*running away from sin, vs. running to holiness
So, I decided to do it, not preach about it
Today, talk about something “we should do”
Scripture: Matthew 28: 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS
With us (Matthew 18:20)
He sent the Holy Spirit down to us (account in Gospels (Luke) and Acts)
We need the Holy Spirit
Jesus had: Acts 10: 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
Apostles had: Acts 2:1-4
Important to know we are not on our own, the apostles were not, nor was Jesus
THE ORDER
Plainly: teach, baptize, teach
Also: disciple, baptize, teach
Teach Everyone “Teach all nations”
Baptize Them
Teach Everything “Teaching them to observe all things…”
Notice use of Greek word: Pas: any, all, every, the whole
All things, not some things, or a few things
This goes out to all Christians, not just the apostles, by reason of logic…
Outreach – Who is responsible?
TEACH THE GOOD NEWS
Teaching one of the main emphasis
View of “teacher”
Differentiate “formal teaching” (gift) from general teaching (we can’t escape)
How we teach ex. Children
Teach by action more than words
Ex. Of Teacher: Jesus
Had the Holy Spirit
not forceful
proven by actions
Q: What had the greater impact on you, all of the words and teachings Jesus spoke in the Gospels, or the fact that he died for you?
Words and teachings have a place, as we’ll see, but the greater is his death for us.
We are always teaching
teaching not preaching (as from a pulpit)
What are we teaching here? The Good News
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Then in v. 16 it goes into baptism
Brief look at gifts (teaching)
some are more apt to teaching, have the “gift,” does not bar others
we are all called to share the gospel
what our spiritual gifts are may determine how we do it
Some may think I am not apt to teach
Remember God uses those who think they can not do it
Why: so they know its God working in their life
Moses Exodus 4:10-12
Peter
At first- Often miss-spoke and did not understand
Matthew 16:21-23
At the Passover
John 13:8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
The soldiers ear
John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
No doubt he loved the Lord, but not well spoken
Then God went to work, through the Spirit
Peter we see in the Gospels becomes, in Acts, the Rock that Jesus predicted.
In Acts 2:14-41, Peter effectively did what these first two aspects of what is called the “great commission” called us to do. Notice, he did it through God, not of his own.
Acts 2:14-41
We need to be prepared to show the Gospel, and show Jesus.
I think- most effective way- to start with OT and use the NT to show how Jesus fulfilled, but many ways are effective.
Take studying, but I think it is important to have some idea, some set of verses you plan to use to lead someone to Christ
(address why)
Will make available some different sets for those who need it
(possibly review during sermon)
CONCLUSION
What to expect over next few weeks
Over the next few weeks: address some keys to remember in presenting the Gospel, as well as where to find it. We are going to briefly talk about baptism, not what it is necessarily, but why someone should do it. Then we’ll move into our third area, not only looking at teaching everything, where we’ll address some commandments, but also looking at our role in learning.
Words of Jesus: All power is given unto Him, and He is with us, because of that we should teach people about Him
