INTRODUCTION

The Sabbath was instituted by God as a day of rest and worship, a sacred ordinance meant to benefit humanity. However, over time, religious leaders added rigid rules and traditions that turned it into a burden rather than a blessing. What was meant to bring life became a system of legalism that prioritised ritual over compassion.

In Luke 6:1-11, Jesus confronted this distortion by demonstrating that the true essence of the Sabbath is not about strict adherence to rules but about reflecting God’s heart of mercy. When His disciples plucked grain on the Sabbath and when He healed a man with a withered hand, the Pharisees reacted with criticism. Yet, Jesus responded by revealing His authority as Lord of the Sabbath.

This passage challenges believers to examine their understanding of worship and obedience. It calls us to prioritise mercy, compassion, and love over empty religious rituals, aligning our lives with the true heart of God.

1. JESUS IS LORD OVER RELIGIOUS SYSTEMS

Jesus has authority over all traditions and institutions, including the Sabbath.

a) Declaring His Authority (Luke 6:5)

Jesus affirmed that He is Lord of the Sabbath. His authority supersedes human traditions.

b) The Sabbath Was Made for Man (Mark 2:27)

The Sabbath was created to serve humanity, not to enslave it.

c) Christ Above Legalism (Colossians 2:16-17)

Ritual observances are shadows; Christ is the substance.

d) God’s Authority Is Supreme (Psalm 103:19)

God’s rule overrides all human regulations.

Biblical Example: David ate the consecrated bread when he was hungry, showing that human need can supersede ritual law (1 Samuel 21:1-6).

2. MERCY IS GREATER THAN RITUAL

God values compassion and love above strict rule-keeping.

a) God Desires Mercy (Hosea 6:6)

God prefers mercy over sacrifice. Compassion reflects His nature.

b) Meeting Human Needs (Luke 6:3-4)

Jesus defended His disciples because their actions met a genuine need.

c) Compassion Reflects God’s Heart (Psalm 145:8-9)

God is gracious and full of compassion.

d) Love Fulfils the Law (Romans 13:10)

When we walk in love, we fulfil God’s commandments.

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan showed mercy to a wounded man, fulfilling God’s law of love (Luke 10:30-37).

3. DOING GOOD SHOULD NEVER BE DELAYED

Opportunities to show kindness and help others should not be postponed.

a) A Question of Purpose (Luke 6:9)

Jesus asked whether it is lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath. Doing good is always right.

b) Immediate Action (Luke 6:10)

Jesus healed the man instantly. Compassion does not wait.

c) Seizing Opportunities (Galatians 6:10)

As we have opportunity, we should do good to all people.

d) Faith Expressed Through Action (James 2:15-17)

True faith is demonstrated through acts of kindness.

Biblical Example: Jesus healed the crippled woman on the Sabbath, showing that acts of mercy are always appropriate (Luke 13:10-13).

4. LEGALISM CAN BLIND THE HEART

Rigid adherence to rules can hinder spiritual understanding and compassion.

a) The Pharisees’ Hardness (Luke 6:7)

They watched Jesus to accuse Him, revealing a hardened heart.

b) Anger at Good Works (Luke 6:11)

Instead of rejoicing, they were filled with rage. Legalism distorts perception.

c) Missing God’s Move (Matthew 23:23)

They neglected justice, mercy, and faith while focusing on minor details.

d) A Call to True Worship (John 4:23-24)

God seeks worshippers who worship in spirit and truth.

Biblical Example: The elder brother in the prodigal son story valued fairness over mercy, missing the father’s heart (Luke 15:25-32).

CONCLUSION

Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, calls us to a higher understanding of worship—one that prioritises mercy, compassion, and love. True spirituality is not measured by rigid adherence to rules but by how well we reflect the heart of God in our actions.

As you walk with Christ, let mercy guide your decisions. Choose compassion over criticism, love over legalism, and action over delay. In doing so, you will truly honour the Lord of the Sabbath and reflect His nature to the world.
