INTRODUCTION
One of the most striking demonstrations of humility in the ministry of Jesus occurred during the Last Supper when He washed the feet of His disciples. In the culture of that time, foot washing was the task of the lowest servant in the household because people walked on dusty roads wearing sandals.
Yet Jesus, the Master and Lord, took a towel, poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet. This act surprised the disciples because it reversed social expectations. Peter even resisted at first, feeling unworthy of such a gesture from his Lord.
Through this powerful act, Jesus taught His followers that greatness in the kingdom of God is measured not by status or power but by humility and service. He demonstrated that true leadership is expressed through serving others with love.
1. HUMILITY IS A MARK OF TRUE GREATNESS
Jesus demonstrated that true greatness is found in humility.
a. Greatness Through Service (Matthew 23:11)
Those who desire greatness in God’s kingdom must become servants.
b. The Example of Christ (Philippians 2:5-7)
Jesus humbled Himself and took the form of a servant.
c. God Exalts the Humble (James 4:10)
Humility positions believers for God’s exaltation.
d. Pride Leads to a Fall (Proverbs 16:18)
Pride destroys, but humility preserves.
Biblical Example:
Moses was described as the meekest man on earth, and God used him greatly to lead Israel (Numbers 12:3).
2. TRUE LEADERSHIP IS SERVANT LEADERSHIP
Jesus taught that leadership in God’s kingdom is expressed through serving others.
a. Leading by Example (John 13:15)
Jesus said He had given an example for His disciples to follow.
b. Serving Rather Than Being Served (Mark 10:45)
Jesus came to serve and to give His life for many.
c. Caring for Others (Galatians 5:13)
Believers are called to serve one another in love.
d. Faithfulness in Small Acts (Luke 16:10)
God values faithfulness even in seemingly small tasks.
Biblical Example:
Joseph faithfully served in Potiphar’s house and in prison before God elevated him to leadership in Egypt (Genesis 39:2-4).
3. HUMILITY PURIFIES AND STRENGTHENS RELATIONSHIPS
Jesus’ act of washing the disciples’ feet also symbolised spiritual cleansing and unity.
a. Spiritual Cleansing (John 13:10)
Jesus explained that those who are washed need cleansing of their feet.
b. Forgiveness and Restoration (Colossians 3:13)
Humility enables believers to forgive one another.
c. Unity Among Believers (Ephesians 4:2-3)
Humility helps preserve unity in the body of Christ.
d. Love Expressed Through Service (1 John 3:18)
Love is demonstrated through actions, not words alone.
Biblical Example:
Jesus restored Peter after his denial, demonstrating humility, grace, and love (John 21:15-17).
4. HUMILITY BRINGS BLESSINGS FROM GOD
Jesus concluded His teaching by promising blessings to those who practise humility and service.
a. Obedience Brings Blessing (John 13:17)
Jesus said those who practise these things will be blessed.
b. God Gives Grace to the Humble (1 Peter 5:5)
The humble receive divine grace.
c. Honour Comes Through Humility (Proverbs 22:4)
Humility leads to honour, riches, and life.
d. Eternal Reward for Faithful Service (Matthew 25:21)
Faithful servants will receive their Master’s commendation.
Biblical Example:
David served faithfully as a shepherd before God raised him to become king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:11-13).
CONCLUSION
The washing of the disciples’ feet is a powerful demonstration of humility and servant leadership. Jesus, though Lord and Master, humbled Himself to perform the task of a servant, teaching His followers that greatness in God’s kingdom is measured by humility and service.
Believers are called to follow Christ’s example by serving others with love, humility, and compassion. When we humble ourselves and serve faithfully, we reflect the character of Christ and position ourselves for God’s blessing and honour.
