INTRODUCTION

In John chapter six, after the miracle of feeding the five thousand, the people sought Jesus again. Many of them followed Him because they had eaten the bread and were satisfied physically. However, Jesus used that moment to teach them a deeper spiritual truth: that He Himself is the true Bread that gives life to the world.

Throughout Scripture, bread symbolises sustenance, nourishment, and life. Just as physical bread sustains the body, Jesus provides the spiritual nourishment necessary for eternal life. Without Him, the human soul remains empty, restless, and unsatisfied.

The declaration “I am the bread of life” reveals the divine identity and mission of Christ. He came not merely to perform miracles but to offer Himself as the source of eternal life. Those who come to Him in faith find lasting satisfaction that the world cannot provide.

1. JESUS IS THE SOURCE OF TRUE LIFE

Jesus alone provides the spiritual life that humanity desperately needs.

a. Christ Gives Eternal Life (John 10:10)

Jesus came so that people might have life and have it more abundantly. His mission is to bring spiritual vitality and eternal life.

b. Life Comes Through Believing in Christ (John 20:31)

The Scriptures were written so that people might believe that Jesus is the Son of God and receive life through His name.

c. Spiritual Life Beyond Physical Needs (Matthew 4:4)

Human beings do not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

d. Christ Is the Author of Life (Acts 3:15)

Jesus is the origin and sustainer of life, and through Him believers receive eternal salvation.

Biblical Example:

When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He declared Himself to be the resurrection and the life, demonstrating His authority over life and death (John 11:25-44).

2. JESUS SATISFIES THE HUNGER OF THE SOUL

The deepest needs of the human heart can only be satisfied by Christ.

a. The World Cannot Satisfy the Soul (Ecclesiastes 2:11)

Earthly pursuits often leave people feeling empty and unfulfilled.

b. Christ Provides True Satisfaction (Isaiah 55:2)

God invites people to come and eat what truly satisfies their souls.

c. Spiritual Hunger Leads People to God (Psalm 42:1-2)

The soul longs for God just as a deer thirsts for water.

d. Fulfilment Through Christ Alone (John 4:14)

Jesus promised living water that would permanently satisfy spiritual thirst.

Biblical Example:

The Samaritan woman at the well experienced spiritual transformation when Jesus revealed Himself as the source of living water (John 4:13-14).

3. RECEIVING CHRIST BY FAITH

To experience the life Christ offers, one must personally believe and receive Him.

a. Coming to Christ (John 6:37)

Jesus promised that whoever comes to Him will never be rejected.

b. Believing in Christ (Romans 10:9)

Salvation comes through confessing and believing in Jesus Christ.

c. Accepting the Gift of Salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Eternal life is a gift from God received by grace through faith.

d. Remaining in Christ (John 15:4)

Believers must abide in Christ in order to continue experiencing His life.

Biblical Example:

The thief on the cross placed his faith in Jesus and received the promise of eternal life even in his final moments (Luke 23:42-43).

4. JESUS GIVES ETERNAL SECURITY

Those who receive Christ as the Bread of Life are assured of eternal salvation.

a. Christ Preserves His Believers (John 6:39)

Jesus declared that He would lose none of those whom the Father has given Him.

b. The Promise of Resurrection (John 6:40)

Believers will be raised up on the last day through the power of Christ.

c. Eternal Life Begins Now (John 5:24)

Those who believe in Christ already possess eternal life and have passed from death to life.

d. Hope of Everlasting Fellowship with God (Revelation 21:3-4)

God’s ultimate promise is eternal fellowship with His people.

Biblical Example:

When Jesus fed the Israelites with manna in the wilderness, it sustained them temporarily, but Christ revealed Himself as the true Bread from heaven that gives eternal life (Exodus 16:14-15; John 6:49-51).

CONCLUSION

Jesus’ declaration that He is the Bread of Life reveals the heart of the gospel message. Humanity’s greatest need is not merely physical provision but spiritual life. Christ alone satisfies the hunger of the soul and grants eternal life to those who believe in Him.

Believers must continually come to Christ, feed on His Word, and remain in fellowship with Him. As they do so, they experience the fullness of life, spiritual strength, and the assurance of eternal salvation.
