CHOOSE GOD OVER EVERYTHING

1. Introduction
My dear brothers and sisters,
Every human life is shaped by choices.
Some choices are small:
What to wear.
What to eat.
Where to go.
But some choices define eternity.
There is one choice that stands above all others:
Will I choose God over everything?
Not occasionally.
Not emotionally.
Not when convenient.
But truly —
Above success.
Above relationships.
Above comfort.
Above reputation.
Above even myself.
Today’s message is not motivational.
It is foundational.
Because if God is not first,
everything else will eventually fall out of place.
Jesus said in Gospel of Matthew 6:33:
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Notice:
Not seek God second.
Not seek God after securing your plans.
Not seek God when everything else fails.
Seek first.

2. The Cry of the Human Heart
Every human heart is restless.
Power does not satisfy it.
Pleasure does not complete it.
Possessions do not quiet it.
Why?
Because the human heart was created for God.
As Augustine of Hippo wrote:
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
Look at society:
More technology.
More wealth.
More options.
But less peace.
Why?
Because we are choosing everything —
except the One thing necessary.
The heart cries:
“Is this all?”
“There must be more.”
“Why am I still empty?”
That cry is not weakness.
It is the echo of eternity inside you.

3. Biblical Foundation
A. Joshua’s Bold Declaration
In the Book of Joshua 24:15, Joshua stands before the people and says:
“Choose this day whom you will serve…
But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua does not force.
He challenges.
Choose.
God never forces love.
He invites decision.

B. Elijah on Mount Carmel
In First Book of Kings 18:21, Elijah confronts Israel:
“How long will you waver between two opinions?
If the Lord is God, follow Him!”
Half-hearted faith is spiritual paralysis.

C. The Rich Young Man
In Gospel of Mark 10:21–22, Jesus looks at the rich young man and says:
“Go, sell what you have… and follow Me.”
He went away sad.
Why?
Because he wanted eternal life —
but not at the cost of his attachments.
He chose wealth over God.
And he walked away from the only Person who could give him life.

D. Mary’s Choice
In Gospel of Luke 10:42, Jesus says about Mary:
“Mary has chosen the better part.”
She chose presence over performance.
She chose listening over busyness.
She chose Jesus over distraction.

4. Spiritual Diagnosis
Why is choosing God so difficult?
Because we are divided.
We say:
“God first.”
But our time says:
“Career first.”
Our spending says:
“Comfort first.”
Our schedule says:
“Entertainment first.”
Our anxiety says:
“Control first.”
The real issue is not disbelief.
It is disordered love.
When good things replace God,
they become idols.
An idol is not necessarily a statue.
It is anything you cannot lose without losing yourself.

5. The Great Spiritual Contrast
Let us compare two lives:
A Life That Chooses the World
• Success but no peace.
• Applause but no intimacy with God.
• Activity but no purpose.
• Possessions but no joy.
Temporary gain.
Eternal loss.

A Life That Chooses God
• May face struggle.
• May face misunderstanding.
• May lose opportunities.
But:
• Has inner stability.
• Has eternal direction.
• Has unshakable peace.
Jesus said in Gospel of Matthew 16:26:
“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”

6. Pastoral Reflection
Choosing God does not mean:
• Abandoning responsibilities.
• Neglecting family.
• Rejecting ambition.
It means reordering everything under God.
When God is first:
• Family becomes holy.
• Work becomes mission.
• Suffering becomes purification.
• Success becomes stewardship.
God does not compete with your life.
He completes it.

Francis of Assisi
He left wealth to embrace poverty.
The world called him foolish.
History calls him holy.

Mother Teresa
She left security to serve the poorest.
She chose God in the distressing disguise of the poor.

He chose fidelity in suffering.
Even in illness, he chose God publicly and courageously.
The saints were not extraordinary because of talent.
They were extraordinary because of priority.
They chose God over everything.

8. Self-Examination
Ask yourself honestly:
• What occupies my thoughts most?
• What do I fear losing?
• What do I sacrifice prayer for?
• What defines my identity?
• If God asked me to let go, could I?
Do not answer quickly.
Answer truthfully.
Because eternity depends on priority.

9. The Echo of the Message
If you remember one sentence today, remember this:
Whatever you place above God will eventually control you.
Money will demand more.
Ambition will demand more.
Approval will demand more.
Only God gives without enslaving.

10. The Call of the Hour
We live in a time of distraction.
Digital noise.
Cultural confusion.
Moral compromise.
This is not the hour for casual Christianity.
It is the hour for conviction.
God is not asking for a portion.
He is asking for the throne.
In Book of Revelation 3:16, we hear:
“Because you are lukewarm… I will spit you out.”
Strong words.
Because eternal matters require clarity.

11. Weekly Action
This week:
Choose one concrete act that proves God is first.
• Wake up 20 minutes earlier for prayer.
• Remove one unhealthy attachment.
• Reconcile with someone.
• Fast from one distraction.
• Give generously where it hurts.
One clear decision.
Because love is proven in action.

12. The Message to Carry Home
If everything in your life collapses,
but you still have God,
you have not lost.
If everything in your life succeeds,
but you lose God,
you have lost everything.
Choose wisely.
Choose daily.
Choose courageously.
Choose God over everything.

13. Conclusion
My dear friends,
One day you will stand before God.
Not with your bank account.
Not with your titles.
Not with your applause.
Only with your soul.
And the only question that will matter is:
Did you choose Him?
Joshua chose.
Elijah chose.
Mary chose.
The saints chose.
Now it is your turn.
Choose this day.
And as for you and your house —
may you serve the Lord.

14. Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You alone are worthy of our hearts.
Forgive us
for the times we placed other things above You.
Detach us from what enslaves us.
Purify our desires.
Strengthen our will.
Give us courage
to choose You
when it is costly,
when it is misunderstood,
when it requires sacrifice.
Be our first love.
Be our greatest treasure.
Be our eternal reward.
We choose You today.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
