Series: Jesus- Son Of Man [#61]

A CALL TO THANKFULNESS

Luke 17:11-19

Introduction:

Thankfulness is a key part of our walk with God, and it all starts with recognizing where our blessings truly come from. Think about receiving a gift, (maybe a new job, good health, or a loving family) and instead of just enjoying it, you take a moment to say thank you. That simple act shows you understand that these blessings aren’t just luck or happenstance- They come from God's kindness and generosity. In Luke 17, Jesus heals 10 men with leprosy, but only 1 comes back to thank Him. That man’s gratitude wasn’t just about feeling good; it was a way of saying, “God, I know this gift is from You.” His example challenges us to pause and genuinely thank God for everything we have, recognizing that every good thing flows from His love and mercy. When we make thankfulness a regular part of our lives, it deepens our relationship with God and turns gratitude into a habit of worship.

Living with a thankful heart also keeps us humble. Just like the man who returned to Jesus, when we really recognize that everything we have is because of God's grace, it reminds us that we’re not self-made or totally independent. It’s easy to get caught up in pride or think we’ve earned our blessings, but true thankfulness keeps us grounded and aware of our dependence on God’s kindness. In a World that pushes us to rely on ourselves, gratitude helps us stay humble and open to more of God’s grace. When we practice thankfulness every day, it changes how we see ourselves and others- Less pride, more humility. That attitude of gratitude makes our worship more genuine and our lives more aligned with God's heart. It’s about living with open hands and a thankful spirit, knowing that everything good is a gift from Him.

Luke 17:11-19

Thankfulness…

1. Recognizes the true source of our blessings.

When we talk about thankfulness, it’s important to understand that true gratitude begins with recognizing where our blessings really come from- God Himself. In a World that often encourages us to focus on what we have or what we’ve achieved, acknowledging God as the source shifts our perspective. It’s about seeing every good thing in our lives, (our health, relationships, opportunities) as gifts from His generous hand. When we pause to thank Him, it’s an act of worship that reminds us we are dependent on His grace, not just self-effort or luck. This mindset helps us stay humble and keeps our hearts rooted in gratitude rather than entitlement.

Recognizing God as the ultimate giver also changes how we approach life. It’s easy to take blessings for granted or assume they’re deserved because of our hard work; but when we acknowledge that everything we have is a gift from God, it cultivates humility and trust. Instead of worrying about what we lack, we can rest in the understanding that God’s generosity is endless. This attitude of thankfulness becomes a powerful antidote to entitlement, helping us to live with open hands and grateful hearts, appreciating every moment as a divine gift.

The story of the Samaritan leper reminds us that genuine thankfulness involves conscious acknowledgment. The leper didn’t just experience healing- He returned to Jesus to recognize that his healing was a gift from God. His gratitude was a declaration of faith, a way of saying, “I know where this blessing comes from.” For us today, it’s a call to regularly pause and recognize that everything good in our lives flows from God’s love and mercy. When we do, thankfulness becomes more than just words- It becomes a way of life that deepens our relationship with God and transforms our outlook, even amid life’s challenges.

Thankfulness…

2. Cultivates a heart of gratitude and humility.

Thankfulness isn’t just about saying “thanks” when things go well; it’s a mindset that shapes how we see ourselves and our place in the World. When we genuinely recognize that every good thing in our lives comes from God’s grace, it naturally leads to humility. Instead of thinking we’ve earned everything on our own, thankfulness reminds us that we’re dependent on His mercy and kindness. Like the healed leper who returned to Jesus, true gratitude is about acknowledging that we are undeserving; yet still loved and cared for by God. This awareness keeps our hearts humble because it shifts our focus from ourselves to the One who gives us life and blessings.

Cultivating a heart of gratitude also challenges the false idea that we are self-sufficient. In a culture that pushes independence and self-reliance, thankfulness calls us to recognize our real dependence on God for everything- Whether it’s health, relationships, or everyday sustenance. When we practice gratitude daily, it helps us see life as a gift rather than something we’ve earned. This perspective brings a sense of contentment and peace, freeing us from pride and the need to prove ourselves. It’s in this space of humility and dependence that we become more receptive to God’s grace, allowing His love to shape us from the inside out.

Ultimately, thankfulness and humility go hand in hand. When our hearts are grateful, they become more humble, which opens us up to even more of God’s grace. Humility keeps us from getting caught up in pride or spiritual arrogance, reminding us that everything we have is a gift from God. As we live with this attitude, our worship becomes more authentic, and our service to others becomes more genuine. Gratitude keeps our hearts humble, creating a cycle where God’s grace becomes more evident in our lives, transforming us into more Christlike people who live with open hands and thankful hearts.

Thankfulness…

3. Expresses our worship and deepens our faith.

Thankfulness is more than just saying "thank you"- It is a way of showing our true worship and recognizing God's sovereignty in every part of our lives. When we take time to pause and acknowledge God’s blessings, it’s an act of surrender that honors His authority and goodness. Gratitude shifts our hearts from focusing on what’s missing to appreciating what we’ve already received, reminding us that every good thing comes from His hand. In doing so, we’re not just expressing polite thanks; we’re actively engaging in a form of worship that deepens our connection with God.

When we genuinely thank God, it transforms our perspective and builds our faith. Thankfulness becomes a foundation for trusting Him even when life gets tough. Instead of letting challenges shake us, gratitude helps us see God's presence in the midst of difficulties. It’s a heart posture that says, “I trust You, even when I don’t fully understand,” and this trust grows stronger as we reflect on His past faithfulness. Like the one leper who returned to thank Jesus after being healed, our gratitude moves us from simply receiving blessings to actively acknowledging and worshiping God for who He is- Which ultimately leads to a deeper, more vibrant faith.

Expressing thankfulness also has a powerful ripple effect. When we sincerely show gratitude, it becomes a testimony to others- A way to share God’s goodness and invite them into worship too. Our attitude of thankfulness can inspire those around us to trust God more deeply and see His hand at work in their lives. Over time, cultivating this daily habit of gratitude helps us grow spiritually, maturing in faith and becoming more aware of God's ongoing presence. Thankfulness isn’t just a feeling; it’s a lifestyle that shapes our worship and strengthens our relationship with God, making us more like Jesus every day.

Conclusion:

Today’s story about the Samaritan leper reminds us that real gratitude is a conscious choice to see God as the source of everything good in our lives. It’s about taking a moment to recognize that our health, our relationships, our opportunities, and even our salvation all come from God's generosity. When we practice thankfulness, it keeps us humble because it reminds us we’re dependent on Him, not self-sufficient. Living with a grateful heart changes how we see ourselves and others; it deepens our relationship with God, fuels our faith, and helps us live with open hands and a thankful spirit every day. Gratitude isn’t just a feeling- It’s a daily decision that transforms our perspective and keeps us rooted in worship and trust.
