Funeral Message: “I Want Some of That”
1. Near the End of A Journey
• One thing many people do near the end of a life
• Call the preacher in order to make sure last rites are rendered
• Call the preacher make sure the person is ready to go to heaven
• Call the preacher that he or she may say something to bring comfort or peace
• Call the preacher and make sure the Lord is the dying’s Good Shepherd
2. Moments in a person’s life that we remember
• Joe had moments like the time in married Barbra
• Joe had moments I remember him showing me his wood work
• I remember Joe telling me about his garden he loved to raise
• I remember a moment in church that revealed something about Joe’s heart
• Joe was already well up in years. His steps had slowed, tremendously.
3. One Sunday morning, after the sermon had ended and the congregation began to rise, he did something unforgettable. He pushed himself up from his seat, steadied himself on the pew, and began walking slowly down the aisle. Every step was deliberate. Every breath was measured. But his eyes… his eyes were fixed with purpose.
When he reached the front, he looked at me and said words that summed up his entire walk with God:
4. Psalm 23 “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want” joe was saying when he walked up the isle I want some of that.
• He was saying I want God to be My Shepherd
• I want God to be alive in my soul
• I want God I am hungry For God
• I want to listen to God yes I want some of that.
5. “I want some of that.” Joe was saying
• Joe was not saying I want to bring attention to my self
• Joe was not saying this is just an ordinary moment
• Joe was saying I want more of God I want some of that.
• I want the presence of God
• I want a touch of the Holy Spirit
• I want more of God.
6. What a testimony. Joe gave that Sunday morning
• Many when we get older we grow colder, but I think Joe grew older and grew hungrier
• Joe now has a great testimony he might say I am lying down in green pastures.
• He is leading me in paths of righteousness
• Though I walked through the valley of the shadow of death I feared no evil for He was with me
7. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Don’t we all want some of that
• Joe was by no means perfect but had many failures but he had a longing for God —
• That longing for God It’s what carried him through trials, through sickness, through loss, through every season.
• And now, as we gather to say goodbye, we can say with confidence that the God he longed for… the God he reached for… the God he walked down that aisle for… has now welcomed him home.
• I want some of that
8. Finally, Barbra joe loved you
• Joe didn’t just live a long life but he lived a seeking life
• Joe never lost his hunger for the anointing
• “Don’t stop seeking. Don’t stop walking. Don’t stop wanting more of God. If an old man like Joe could still say, ‘I want some of that,’ then you can too.” His journey is complete.
His faith has become sight. And the anointing he longed for — he now experiences in full, in the presence of the Lord.
• May his memory inspire us.
May his example challenge us.
And may his words echo in our hearts “I want some of that.”
