Summary: This Brings in the Lake Of Fire and Second Death

Opening Prayer

O most holy and righteous Father,

Thou eternal God, Creator of heaven and earth,

We come before Thee this day with humble hearts and bowed spirits.

Lord, we acknowledge Thy holiness, Thy justice, and Thy truth.

We confess that Thou art righteous in all Thy ways, and holy in all Thy judgments.

We thank Thee for Thy mercy, for Thy longsuffering, and above all for the precious blood of Thy Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

As we open Thy Word, we ask that Thy Holy Spirit would move among us.

Remove every distraction, every hardness of heart, and every spirit of pride.

Grant us ears to hear, eyes to see, and hearts to understand the truth of Thy Word.

Lord, this is a serious hour, and these are weighty truths.

Let not this message be heard lightly, nor received carelessly.

Convict where conviction is needed.

Comfort where repentance has already been found.

Awaken those who are asleep, and warn those who are in danger.

May Thy Word not return void, but accomplish that which Thou hast purposed.

Above all, may Jesus Christ be lifted up, glorified, and honored in this place.

We ask these things not in our own name,

But in the mighty, saving, and precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

INTRODUCTION: A TRUTH MEN FEAR TO HEAR

There are truths in Scripture that comfort the weary soul, and there are truths that shake the soul awake. The doctrine of eternal judgment is not written to terrify for terror’s sake, but to warn before it is too late. The Bible does not avoid the subject of hell. Jesus did not soften His language. The apostles did not apologize for preaching judgment. God speaks plainly because eternity is at stake.

We are living in an age that loves comfort and hates warning. Yet the Word of God declares that love without truth is deception, and mercy without justice is not mercy at all. The Lake of Fire is not a myth, not a metaphor, and not a scare tactic. It is the final judgment of God upon sin, rebellion, and rejection of His Son.

I. THE FINAL DESTINATION OF DEATH ITSELF

Revelation 20:14–15 (KJV)

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Here we see something staggering: death itself dies. Hell, which has held the dead throughout human history, is emptied and then destroyed. The Lake of Fire is not merely another phase of punishment — it is the final state of judgment. Nothing comes after it.

This is called the second death, not because it ends existence, but because it is a permanent separation from God. The first death separates the soul from the body. The second death separates the soul from God forever.

II. WHO ENTERS THE LAKE OF FIRE FIRST

Revelation 19:20 (KJV)

“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet… These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

Before any human being enters the Lake of Fire, God casts in the Beast and the False Prophet — the final world deceivers. Then Scripture continues:

Revelation 20:10 (KJV)

“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone… and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

This matters because it shows that hell was not designed for mankind.

Matthew 25:41 (KJV)

“Everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

Men go there not because God desired it, but because they followed rebellion instead of redemption.

III. THE DURATION: EVERLASTING MEANS EVERLASTING

The Bible uses language that cannot be softened:

• “For ever and ever”

• “Everlasting fire”

• “Unquenchable fire”

• “Their worm dieth not”

Mark 9:43–48 (KJV)

“Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

If heaven is eternal, hell must also be eternal. Scripture never hints at an end, relief, or annihilation. Eternal life and eternal punishment stand side by side in God’s Word.

IV. CONSCIOUS TORMENT, NOT UNCONSCIOUSNESS

Luke 16:23–24 (KJV)

“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments…”

The rich man:

• Sees

• Speaks

• Remembers

• Suffers

Hell is conscious existence. Memory does not fade. Awareness does not cease. Pain is not numbed by time.

________________________________________

V. THE SECOND DEATH EXPLAINED

The second death is not non-existence. It is existence without hope.

No mercy.

No grace.

No gospel.

No Christ.

All chances end at death.

________________________________________

VI. WHO WILL BE CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE

Revelation 21:8 (KJV)

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable…”

Notice: the list begins with the fearful and unbelieving. Those who feared man more than God. Those who rejected truth. Those who refused to repent.

Hell is not only for violent criminals. It is for unforgiven sinners.

________________________________________

VII. JESUS SPOKE MORE ABOUT HELL THAN ANYONE

Matthew 13:42 (KJV)

“There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”

Wailing — sorrow.

Gnashing — rage.

Hell is filled with regret and hatred, not repentance.

Matthew 5:22 (KJV)

“In danger of hell fire.”

Jesus warned because He loved. Silence would have been cruelty.

________________________________________

VIII. EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION FROM GOD’S PRESENCE

2 Thessalonians 1:8–9 (KJV)

“Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord…”

Hell is not merely pain — it is absence of God. Every good thing comes from Him. Hell contains none of it.

________________________________________

IX. THE FIRE THAT IS NEVER QUENCHED

Matthew 3:12 (KJV)

“He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

This fire does not purify. It does not consume. It punishes eternally.

X. WHY GOD MUST JUDGE SIN

If God ignored sin:

• Justice would be meaningless

• Evil would win

• The cross would be unnecessary

Hell proves God is holy.

The cross proves God is loving.

________________________________________

XI. THE BOOK OF LIFE — THE ONLY ESCAPE

“Whosoever was not found written in the book of life…”

Not works.

Not religion.

Not sincerity.

Only those washed by the blood of the Lamb.

________________________________________

XII. THE CROSS — WHERE JUDGMENT FELL ON CHRIST

Jesus endured:

• Wrath

• Separation

• Judgment

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

That cry is hell compressed into hours.

________________________________________

XIII. REJECTING CHRIST IS CHOOSING JUDGMENT

There is no neutral ground.

To reject Christ is to accept judgment.

To delay repentance is to gamble with eternity.

________________________________________

XIV. THE GREAT WHITE THRONE

Revelation 20:11

No defense.

No excuse.

No appeal.

Books opened.

Names checked.

Sentence executed.

________________________________________

XV. THE FINALITY OF ETERNITY

Once cast in:

• No prayer is answered

• No repentance accepted

• No mercy offered

Isaiah 66:24 (KJV)

“Their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched.”

________________________________________

XVI. WHY THIS MESSAGE MATTERS NOW

Every heartbeat is mercy.

Every breath is borrowed.

You are closer to eternity now than when this sermon began.

________________________________________

XVII. THE FINAL QUESTION

Is your name written in the Book of Life?

Not “are you religious?”

Not “are you sincere?”

But have you trusted Jesus Christ alone?

________________________________________

CONCLUSION: TWO DESTINIES — ONE CROSS

Heaven is real.

Hell is real.

Jesus Christ is the dividing line.

The Lake of Fire is God’s justice.

The cross is God’s mercy.

Choose while you can.

XVIII. THE GREAT WHITE THRONE — GOD’S FINAL COURTROOM

Revelation 20:11–12 (KJV)

“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away… And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God…”

This throne is white because it is perfectly righteous.

It is great because it is final.

It is terrifying because nothing survives appeal.

Kings stand beside peasants.

Famous beside forgotten.

Rich beside poor.

There are no social classes at judgment — only souls.

Earth and heaven flee because creation itself cannot endure perfect holiness. There is no hiding place, no shadow to step into, no mountain to run behind. All stand exposed before God.

________________________________________

XIX. THE BOOKS — GOD HAS KEPT PERFECT RECORDS

“And the books were opened…”

Every life is recorded with absolute accuracy.

• Every word spoken

• Every thought entertained

• Every motive examined

• Every opportunity rejected

God does not judge by rumor.

He does not judge by opinion.

He judges by truth.

The books prove guilt — but they do not save.

________________________________________

XX. THE BOOK OF LIFE — THE ONLY BOOK THAT MATTERS

“And another book was opened, which is the book of life…”

This book does not record deeds.

It records names.

Your name is not written there because you were good.

It is written because you were redeemed.

No one argues their case at this moment.

There is no bargaining.

There is no plea for mercy.

The time for mercy was before death.

________________________________________

XXI. “CAST INTO” — THE LANGUAGE OF FINALITY

Scripture does not say the lost walked into the Lake of Fire.

It says they were cast into it.

Judgment is no longer optional.

Choice has ended.

Grace has expired.

The door that once stood open is now sealed forever.

________________________________________

XXII. THE SECOND DEATH — WORSE THAN ANY FEAR KNOWN TO MAN

The first death may come quietly or violently, suddenly or slowly.

The second death comes with certainty.

It is eternal separation from God, who is:

• Light

• Life

• Love

• Comfort

• Peace

To be separated from God forever is to be separated from everything good forever.

________________________________________

XXIII. THE DEVIL DOES NOT RULE HELL — HE SUFFERS THERE

Many imagine Satan ruling hell like a king.

Scripture destroys that lie.

“And the devil… shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

Satan is not the master of hell.

He is its most hated prisoner.

Hell is not his kingdom — it is his doom.

And every soul that follows him follows him into destruction.

________________________________________

XXIV. WHY HELL IS DESCRIBED WITH FIRE AND DARKNESS

Fire burns.

Darkness terrifies.

God uses these terms because human language cannot fully describe eternal judgment. These are not exaggerations — they are merciful warnings, using the strongest images the human mind can grasp.

If God showed hell as it truly is, the human mind could not endure the vision.

________________________________________

XXV. MEMORY — THE WORM THAT NEVER DIES

“Where their worm dieth not…”

This worm is not merely decay — it is memory.

Memory of:

• Sermons heard

• Scriptures known

• Convictions resisted

• Grace refused

No one in hell doubts the Bible.

No one in hell questions Christ.

They know — too late.

________________________________________

XXVI. NO REPENTANCE IN HELL

Hell does not soften hearts.

It hardens them.

Pain alone does not produce repentance — grace does.

Grace is absent in hell.

There are tears — but no repentance.

There is sorrow — but no surrender.

There is agony — but no change.

________________________________________

XXVII. WHY GOD DOES NOT END HELL

Some ask, “Why doesn’t God destroy it?”

Because hell is not a mistake.

It is justice completed.

To end hell would be to deny holiness.

God will not deny Himself.

________________________________________

XXVIII. THE CONTRAST — TWO ETERNAL DESTINIES

Immediately after Revelation 20 comes Revelation 21.

The Lake of Fire.

Then the New Heaven and New Earth.

Darkness versus light.

Separation versus communion.

Judgment versus joy.

God places them side by side so no one misunderstands the choice.

________________________________________

XXIX. “GOD SHALL WIPE AWAY ALL TEARS” — BUT NOT ALL TEARS

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes…”

This promise is for the redeemed — not the condemned.

Hell has tears — but no comfort.

Pain — but no relief.

Awareness — but no hope.

________________________________________

XXX. A WARNING TO RELIGIOUS PEOPLE

Many who stand at the Great White Throne will be religious.

They knew Scripture.

They attended church.

They trusted works.

But religion without Christ is condemnation.

Jesus said, “Ye must be born again.”

________________________________________

XXXI. THE MOST DANGEROUS WORD: “LATER”

Felix said, “Go thy way for this time.”

Scripture never records that he repented.

Later hardens hearts.

Delay dulls conviction.

Many intended to repent — and died before they could.

________________________________________

XXXII. WHY JESUS WARNED SO STRONGLY

Jesus spoke more about hell than heaven.

Why?

Because He would bear hell on the cross.

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

That was judgment falling on the innocent — so the guilty could be spared.

________________________________________

XXXIII. THE CROSS — GOD’S FINAL OFFER BEFORE JUDGMENT

Before fire falls, God shows the cross.

Before wrath comes, mercy speaks.

No one will stand at judgment and say, “I didn’t know.”

The cross stands as eternal evidence.

________________________________________

XXXIV. THE SIMPLE TRUTH MANY MISS

Salvation is simple — but not cheap.

It cost the Son of God His blood.

Hell is not unfair.

It is chosen.

Christ did not fail.

He was rejected.

________________________________________

XXXV. A FINAL PERSONAL QUESTION

If you died tonight:

Where would you be?

Not where you hope.

Not where you assume.

But where Scripture declares.

________________________________________

XXXVI. THE LAST INVITATION WHILE TIME REMAINS

Right now:

• Grace is still offered

• Mercy still calls

• The Book of Life can still receive your name

One day:

• Grace will fall silent

• Mercy will step aside

• Justice will speak

________________________________________

CONCLUSION: TWO ETERNAL REALITIES — ONE CROSS

Hell is real.

Heaven is real.

Jesus Christ is the dividing line.

The Lake of Fire is God’s justice.

The cross is God’s mercy.

Choose while you can.

Closing Prayer

O righteous and holy God,

Thou Judge of all the earth,

We come before Thee at the close of this message with humbled hearts.

Lord, we thank Thee for Thy Word, which is truth,

For Thy warnings, which are mercy,

And for Thy grace, which still calls sinners to repentance.

We acknowledge, O God, that Thou art just in all Thy judgments,

And that every word Thou hast spoken shall surely come to pass.

If Thy Word has pierced our hearts, we confess that it is because Thy Spirit has spoken.

Now, Lord, we ask that this message would not fade from our minds,

Nor be forgotten as we leave this place.

Let the truths we have heard continue to work within us,

Bringing repentance where it is needed,

Strengthening faith where it already dwells,

And drawing souls unto the cross of Christ.

Have mercy, O God, upon those who stand in the valley of decision.

Give them no rest until they have found rest in Thee.

Let none who have heard this warning depart unchanged,

And let no soul here be found unprepared in the day of judgment.

We thank Thee for the precious blood of Jesus Christ,

Which alone delivers us from wrath to come.

Keep us faithful, watchful, and ready,

Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour.

We commit ourselves now into Thy hands,

Trusting in Thy mercy, resting in Thy truth,

And praying that Thy will be done in our lives.

All these things we ask,

In the holy, powerful, and saving name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.
