Jesus Knows (John 4: 1-15)
1-2) Jesus realized that the Pharisees was keeping count of the baptism
The Pharisees was saying that Jesus was baptizing more people then John
They are attempting to make it look like it was a competition between Jesus and John
Turning them into rivals
Is that not like ole satan and the world today
Always trying to make it look as if you are doing something wrong
Ever had someone lie about you, twist what you have done?
People will try their best to make you look and feel bad to make themselves feel better
Here is a little secret, Jesus’s disciples are the ones who did the baptizing, not Jesus
The Pharisees resented Jesus because of his popularity and his teachings
The reason for this is because Jesus’s teachings challenged their teachings - people don’t like that
Notice what scripture didn’t say
Jesus didn’t defend or argue
If I could get to that point, oh what a day that will be
All the struggles I deal with, that one ranks up there pretty high
3-4) After the Pharisees tried pitting Jesus and John against one another
Jesus didn’t correct them or aruge, he just left and went back to Galilee
But in order to get there, he had to go through Samaria
Jesus knew this Samaritan woman was going to be at this well
Jesus also knew that he needed to visit with this woman
Jesus knew this woman was needing him to stop by
Jesus knew this woman’s needs
Is that not something, I am thankful that Jesus knows exactly when to come visit with me
Jesus knows - he knows my needs
He knows your needs, he is wanting to meet with us
He knows exactly what we need and how we need it
What is amazing is it never tells the name of the woman at the well
A lot of miracles happened and the people that was part of it was not named
The young lad in the feeding of the 5,000
I do believe that this was done strategically
It was no accident that names got left out, they was left out for a reason
5-6) Jesus came upon this Samaritan village that bordered the field that Jacob gave to his son, Joseph
It was right at noon time - he was right on time
Jesus was tired from the trip
It was during a hot part of the day
If you have ever been outside on a hot summer day
And you have been walking a long time as Jesus has
You are going to do just as Jesus did and sit down
And you would do exactly what Jesus did next
7) He asked this Samaritan woman for a drink of water
Sounds innocent right
Pretty simple request if you ask me
8-9) Jesus was a jew
Jews wouldn’t have any dealings with the Samaritans
Those days, a Jew wouldn’t be caught dead talking to a Samaritan
They considered them unclean and called them half breeds b/c Assyrians took captive 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom but they left some jewish women
They had children with the women and they became Samaritans
They couldn’t stand the sight of a Samaritan b/c it reminded them of the captivity
But Jesus, Jesus is love, He went there for a reason
Jesus had a well ran ministry
This woman needed Jesus and Jesus had the answer
We get caught up in trying to go bigger and better and forget about the people who doesn’t know Jesus
We try to get so big so that we don’t have to deal with the poor, the homeless, the ones down on life b/c we feel that we are better than others
There are plenty of people still left at the well
Does True Gospel want to run a well ran ministry?
She asked Jesus, how can you ask me for a drink?
A few things that this story tells us, the woman had 5 strikes against her
1- Samaritan - if you touched them, you would be considered unclean
2-she was a woman - women didn’t have a lot of rights, couldn’t buy land,
3-poor - she was gathering the water, rich people had other people to get the water
4-divorced - 5 times - At some point you have to think to yourself, something is wrong with me
5-living in sin with the man not married
This was a recipe for a disaster, you look at all of this and Jesus still went to see her
Ain’t you glad Jesus came to see you
If you are sitting here today and think you have done to much wrong, guess again
Jesus is Jesus, he loves you and he wants you
10) Jesus answered her and said if you knew the gift of God, you wouldn’t have asked me the question that you did
If you would have knew, you would have asked me and I would have given you a drink of the living water
See, the thing is, she doubted
Oh how many times we have doubted what Jesus does for us
We have the opportunity to drink of the living water
And we flat out just doubt a lot of times
It is easy to say if that was me, I would have asked him for the living water
But it is so hard for us to trust him in every day life.
We could be having the greatest day, month or year living the best spiritual life that we have ever had
Then all of sudden, a trial shows up at our doorstep
We seem to revert back to the Samaritan woman
Does that sound about right?
11) The woman said, Sir - you have nothing to gather water in and this well is deep
She was asking the right questions
She then gets curious, where can I get this living water
Do you remember the day that you was contemplating on getting saved
You have heard about it, you believed to a certain point
Then Jesus starts pulling at your heart strings
We start to get curious, we start to ask questions
12) She asked hime if he was greater than their father, Jacob
He was the one who gave us this well
What question did you ask him that day
What questions of doubt do you ask him today
13 - 14) Jesus made it very clear
Whoever and everyone who drinks form this well will be thirsty again
Whoever drinks the water (the living water) that I provide, they will never thirst again
I don’t know about you but I want some more of that water
Pretty straightforward right
Is he not pretty straightforward with us
Don’t cast stones at this woman
This message is just as much for us as it was with her
Come on people, lets get real with ourself
15) The woman has heard enough and in now starting to believe
Remember the day you got saved, you had heard in the past but wasn’t 100% positive
And then all of sudden, it hit’s you, it is time
This is exactly where this woman was at
She was ready - she wants some of that
She believes - she is tired and needing a change
Is this starting to sound familiar with you
She said, Jesus - give me the water that you are talking about, so that I won’t ever get thirsty again and have to come back here ever again
She was just like us, she believed to a certain extent
If you read the rest of the chapter
She had questions
She had doubt
She had sin in her life
Have you ever doubted?
Be honest with yourself
I stand before you today and I have doubted
If you say that you have never doubted, You are just lying to yourself
Here is what I want you to see - Jesus Knows
He knew she needed him and he showed up
He knew she was a sinner and he showed up
He knew she would doubt and he showed up
Jesus knows, Jesus knows and Jesus knows
Stop lying to yourself and saying I have done to much wrong to be forgiven
What is your sin that you are afraid that Jesus will turn you away? He already knows
Jesus came to the woman and he will come to you
