Summary: No Pain, No Gain

Acts 16 v 13 - 24 No Pain, No Gain

The Mission

The Pursuit - 13 And on the sabbath

The Place - we went out of the city by a river side,

The Purpose - where prayer was wont to be made;

The Peace - and we sat down,

The People - and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

The Miracle

The Woman Named - 14 And a certain woman named Lydia,

The Woman Framed - a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira,

The Woman Tamed - which worshipped God, heard us:

The Woman Claimed - whose heart the Lord opened,

The Woman Gained - that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

The Ministry - It Was -

Instant - 15 And when she was baptized, and her household,

Insistent - she besought us, saying,

Inherent - If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,

Incumbent - come into my house, and abide there.

Incessant - And she constrained us.

The Mischief

It's Timing - 16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer,

Testing - a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us,

It's Taxing - which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

It's Taunting - 17 the same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

It's Toiling - 18 And this did she many days.

It's Tiring - But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit,

It's Telling - I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.

It's Terminating - And he came out the same hour.

The Madness - of -

1. The Masters -

It's Revolt 19 and when her masters

It's Root - 19 saw that the hope of their gains was gone,

It's Rage - they caught Paul and Silas,

It's Rush - and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

It's Rights - 20 and brought them to the magistrates, saying,

It's Report - These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

It's Rejection - 21 and teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

Their attacks were - Groundless, Graceless, and Godless.

2. The Multitude -

The Totality - 22 And the multitude

The Unity - rose up together, The Hostility - against them:

Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears,

and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

3. The Magistrates -

All Reserve is gone - 22 and the magistrates rent off their clothes,

All Responsibility is gone - and commanded to beat them.

All Respect is gone - 23 & when they had laid many stripes upon them

All Repute is gone - they cast them into prison,

All Restraint is gone - charging the jailor to keep them safely:

4. The Minder -

His Charge - 24 who, having received such a charge,

His Chastening - thrust them into the inner prison,

His Chaining - and made their feet fast in the stocks.
