INTRODUCTION:

Every believer faces moments that test their faith, conviction, and obedience to God. These moments often require strength and courage that go beyond human ability. When Joshua succeeded Moses, he faced the daunting task of leading Israel into the Promised Land — a land filled with challenges, giants, and fortified cities. Yet, God’s command to him was simple and direct: “Be strong and courageous.”

This divine instruction is not merely motivational; it is a spiritual command rooted in trust and dependence on God’s presence. God never calls His children to face challenges alone. His assurance, “for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest,” reminds us that divine presence guarantees victory.

Today, as we journey through life’s uncertainties, God still speaks to us as He spoke to Joshua. He calls us to be strong in faith, courageous in obedience, and confident in His unfailing Word. Our courage is not built on self-confidence but on God’s promises and power working through us.

1. THE CALL TO BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

God’s command to Joshua reveals that courage is essential for fulfilling divine purpose.

a) Strength comes from God’s presence (Isaiah 41:10)

God told Joshua not to fear because He would be with him. Divine presence is the believer’s greatest source of strength.

b) Courage is a response to God’s promise (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Courage grows when we trust in the certainty of God’s Word and promises.

c) Strength and courage are spiritual responsibilities (Ephesians 6:10)

Believers must actively strengthen themselves in the Lord through prayer, the Word, and fellowship.

d) Fear weakens faith (2 Timothy 1:7)

Fear and doubt cripple obedience, but courage empowers us to take bold steps of faith.

Biblical Example: David showed great courage when he faced Goliath, not because of his size or skill, but because of his faith in God’s power (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

2. THE SOURCE OF TRUE COURAGE

True courage is not self-generated; it is born from trust in God’s character and promises.

a) The Word of God (Joshua 1:8)

Meditation on God’s Word produces inner strength and direction for life’s battles.

b) The Presence of God (Exodus 33:14)

God’s presence assures victory and removes fear. His nearness gives confidence even in difficult circumstances.

c) The Power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)

The Spirit empowers believers to stand boldly in faith and truth.

d) Faith in God’s Promises (Romans 4:20-21)

Abraham did not stagger at God’s promise but was fully persuaded that what God had said, He was able to perform.

Biblical Example: Daniel’s courage in refusing to bow to the king’s decree came from his unwavering faith in God’s power and faithfulness (Daniel 6:10).

3. CHARACTERISTICS OF A COURAGEOUS BELIEVER

A courageous believer displays certain attitudes and qualities that reflect trust in God’s strength and leadership.

a) Obedience to God’s Word (Joshua 1:7)

Courage is demonstrated through complete obedience, even when it seems risky or unpopular.

b) Confidence in God’s ability (Psalm 27:1-3)

The courageous believer sees God’s greatness above the size of the enemy.

c) Perseverance in trials (James 1:2-4)

Courage keeps a believer steadfast when challenges persist and victory seems delayed.

d) Unwavering faith in adversity (Hebrews 11:33-34)

Faith turns weakness into strength and fear into boldness.

Biblical Example: Esther risked her life to save her people, showing extraordinary courage grounded in faith and purpose (Esther 4:16).

4. REWARDS OF STRENGTH AND COURAGE IN GOD

Courage and strength in God always bring divine rewards and testimonies of victory.

a) Divine success and prosperity (Joshua 1:8)

God promised Joshua prosperity and success as he obeyed His Word with courage.

b) Victory over enemies (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Those who stand firm in faith and courage will see God fight their battles.

c) Favour and divine support (2 Chronicles 15:7)

God strengthens and rewards those who refuse to give up.

d) Lasting impact and legacy (Hebrews 11:33-34)

Courageous believers inspire generations and become examples of faith.

Biblical Example: The apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly preached the gospel despite persecution and became instruments of revival (Acts 4:13, 29-31).

CONCLUSION:

God’s call to be strong and courageous is a call to trust Him completely, even when circumstances appear impossible. True strength does not come from physical ability but from faith rooted in God’s Word and presence. When we depend on God’s power, we can overcome fear, face challenges with confidence, and fulfil our divine destiny.

Like Joshua, we are called to lead, conquer, and influence our generation through fearless obedience and faith. As you stand firm in God’s Word and presence, every wall before you will fall, and every promise will be fulfilled.
