Summary: St Michael and all Angels

In Jesus Holy Name September 28, 2025 Text: Luke 15 St Michael and all Angels- Redeemer

“Angels, Angels, Angels”

St Michael and all Angels is one of my favorite Church celebrations.

Angels Easy to read about not so easy to preach about.

Angel are messengers of God created by God. They neither marry nor are given in marriage

They were created to fill the halls of heaven with music and praise

They were sent to rescue Lot and his family from Sodom and Gomorrah. When the men were pounding on Lot’s door the angels blinded them. When the angels had Lot and his family safe they returned and destroyed the cities with fire and hail

When Zachariah was in the temple in Jerusalem an angel appeared to him and said I have been sent by God to tell you that you an your wife Elizabeth will have a son and you are to name him John. But because you do not believe my word you will not be able to peak until the baby is born and name him John.

The angel Gabriel was sent to the teenage girl Mary. And Said. Don’t be afraid, I have been sent by God to tell you good news. You will become pregnant with the Savior of he world your Son will be called Immanuel, Wonderful Counselor, mighty God.

In last week's gospel about the lost coin Jesus said the angels in heaven will rejoice when one sinner repents. These are the angels already singing at the throne of God. They are singing…’HOLY, holy, HOLY, IS THE lord God. Why are they fill the hall of heaven with music over one sinner who repents? They knew that this person who was lost and doomed to the fires of hell heard and believed he gospel that when Jesus died on the cross All their sins were erased, and they were no longer guilty before the throne of God.

On the night Jesus was Arrested Peter took out his sword to fight. Jesus said put it Away don’t you know that my Father would send 12 legions of angels to rescue me if I asked Jesus not ask, even when he was suffering on the cross unable to breath he refused to call for angels. He was obedient to the Father’s will. He died as a man. Because he was fully human. But three days later He rose from death with a resurrected body because He was God. Then on Sunday morning as the women approached the burial tomb of Jesus they were greeted by angels who said.. We know you are looking for Jesus. He is not here. He has risen, just as he said, go tell his disciples He has risen from the dead.

Angels are everywhere in our popular culture. They are in mail order catalogues and decorate our Christmas trees. There are popular TV shows and books written about “angels”. James Steward in the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” had a guardian angel. Michael Landon came to earth to give heavenly advice in the show “Highway to Heaven”. George Washington is said to have seen an angel at Valley Forge.

One survey stated that 77% of Americans believe that each person has a guardian angel. Why is that? Well, you can go to Amazon and buy hundreds of books with titles like: “365 Prayers to Your Angel. Sub title: “Get your prayers answered and fulfill all your dreams with the help of angels.”

Then there is “My Guardian Angel Prayer Book” for children. Unfortunately, these books promote idol worship. If you are trusting and praying to angels then you have broken the 1st commandment. You cannot worship angels. In Revelation 19:10 & Revelation 22:8-9 John receives a message from an angel. He writes: “I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me: do not do it I am a fellow servant with you. Worship God.” And of course we are reminded of the words of Jesus who said that Satan will at times masquerade as an angel of light to deceive the world.

The Bible never tells us that each person has a guardian angel, although He may send angels to protect us for they are at His beck and call. We know from the book of Revelation that God had angels were watching over the 7 churches. Angels were created to worship God and serve His creation. God is our protector. His angels are on call at all times. They don’t take vacation days. They don’t take sick days. They don’t take off for holidays. They never age and they are always ready and available to carry out God’s plans!

Now for the most exciting news. According to Revelation 4 all the saints and angels

who are singing at the throne of God, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty will

return with Jesus when the trumpet sounds.”

Jude 9 refers to an event which is found nowhere else in Scripture. Michael had to

struggle or dispute with Satan about the body of Moses whose body Satan wanted to claim.

We also learn from the vision of Daniel that angels and demons fight spiritual battles over the

souls of men and nations, and that the demons resist angels and try to prevent them from

doing God’s bidding. Michael is called the “Archangel” for he carries out God’s justice,

leading God’s army at the end of human history to defeat Satan and his evil hosts. I

n the final battle of Armageddon

Michael is called the Archangel, will blow the trumpet for he is in charge of God’s

army of angels.

When that final day arrives Michael will blow the trumpet and Jesus will appear in the

And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive will be caught up with them

In the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. ( 1stThessalonians 4:16) Then at some point we

will all receive our glorified resurrected bodies, fashioned like our Savior’s glorious body.

(Philippians 3:20-21

Then in Rev 6 when the 5th seal was opened the plea of the martyrs, Peter, Paul, Stephen,

the children from Minnesota, and the millions of martyrs through the ages including Charlie Kirk

cry out in a loud voice. “ How long Sovereign Lord holy and true until you judge the inhabitants

of earth and avenge our blood?” ) According to Rev 4 We will gather at the Throne of God and

join in the song of praise with all our loved ones and the angels.. “Worthy is the Lamb to receive

glory, honor and power.

We may not yet know the melody being sun at God’s altar but This morning let us offer our voices

in song: Holy God We Praise Thy Name.
