The Greatest Seat—Salvation
Luke 19:1–10; Ephesians 2:6
Introduction
When you look around the world today, we are all chasing a seat. Some are chasing seats in government, believing power will secure them. Others are chasing seats in boardrooms, convinced wealth and influence will satisfy. Some are chasing seats in classrooms, hoping education alone will define their future. Others want seats of recognition, fame, applause, or status.
Chasing those seats without Christ is temporary because all of them can fade. They come and go. They can be given today and taken away tomorrow. None of them can secure your soul.
That’s why Jesus asked the most important question in Mark 8:36:
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet lose their soul?
You can sit in the highest chair on earth and still miss eternity. You can gain everything the world offers and still lose what matters most. That’s why today we must talk about the greatest seat, the one God Himself offers through salvation in Jesus Christ.
Zacchaeus and the Search for the Greatest Seat
Zacchaeus knew this struggle. He had money and a position. He had recognition in his city, even if it came with hatred because he was a tax collector. By worldly standards, Zacchaeus already had a high seat. But he knew something was missing.
So one day, when Jesus passed through Jericho, Zacchaeus did something unusual. He climbed into a sycamore tree just to see Him. Think about that for a moment: a wealthy man climbing a tree like a child. Why? Because even with all his earthly seats, his soul was still searching for the right one.
And then something happened. Jesus stopped. He looked up into that tree and said,
Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today. (Luke 19:5)
In that moment, Zacchaeus discovered the greatest seat was not in his office or his wealth. The greatest seat was fellowship with Christ. That day, Jesus declared:
Today salvation has come to this house. (Luke 19:9)
The Eternal Seat in Christ
Every other seat we chase is temporary. But the seat of salvation is eternal. Paul says in Ephesians 2:6:
God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.
That is the secure seat. That is the permanent seat. Once God seats you with Christ, no power, no person, and no circumstance can take that away.
But the seat of salvation is eternal because Christ Himself secured it with His blood.
The Question Today
Where are you seated?
Are you seated in temporary chairs that will one day fade? Or are you seated with Christ in the eternal place of salvation?
Zacchaeus climbed into a tree looking for meaning, but he climbed down into salvation. And today Jesus is calling you, just as He called Zacchaeus:
Come down. Come to Me. Take the seat I prepared for you.
Lord, I choose the greatest seat of salvation in Christ. I will not chase temporary chairs and miss the eternal one You prepared for me. My seat is secure in You.
