The story of Obed-Edom, focusing on how the presence of God brings unexpected blessings even in places and people others might overlook.

So I want to talk about The Blessing is in the House.

Text: 2 Samuel 6:10–12

Theme: When the presence of God dwells in your house, blessings will overflow. Even when you weren’t the first choice.

Have you ever felt like a backup plan, like someone else’s mistake became your miracle?

Have you ever been placed in a situation where you didn’t volunteer, yet what was dropped on you became the doorway to your breakthrough?

Obed-Edom was not David’s first choice. He didn’t plan to host the Ark of the Covenant. But when the Ark showed up at his doorstep, something powerful happened. What others feared, God used to bless.

In the Context of the Blessing in 2 Samuel 6:1–10, David was attempting to bring the Ark of the Covenant — the symbol of God’s presence back to Jerusalem.

But instead of following God’s prescribed order, whereas the Levites would be carrying the Ark on poles, they decided to placed the Ark on a cart.

During the journey as they were traveling, the Ark became unstable and began to lean over to the side and Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark and was struck dead by God.

In fear and confusion, David halted the journey.

When the presence of God is not handled with reverence, it can be dangerous. But when it is received with humility, it becomes a blessing.

When David seen this, David needed a place to park the Ark temporarily, and Obed-Edom was chosen.

In verse 10 The Arrival of Glory (2 Samuel 6:10) the Bible says:

“So David would not remove the ark of the Lord unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.”

Now Obed-Edom didn’t lobby for it. He didn’t beg for the blessing. But the presence of God showed up at his house.

Obed-Edom didn’t campaign for the blessing. He wasn’t trying to position himself for favors, but the presence of God came knocking at his door.

He didn’t ask for it. He didn’t chase it. But Obed-Edom’s house became the unexpected home for God’s glory.

Here is the application:

Sometimes, you don’t need to chase the blessing — just make room for it. Obed-Edom didn’t prepare a sermon. He didn’t host a revival. He simply opened his doors to the presence of God.

What would happen if we made room in our homes, hearts, and churches for God’s presence, not just on Sunday, but every day?

PTMC What kind of transformation would we see if we would welcomed God’s presence into this placeour lives ?

Imagine the change that would take place, if we didn’t limit God to a church service, but created space for His presence to dwell in daily, and not just when we show up at the sanctuary.

In verse 11 we see The Evidence of the Presence.

“And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.”

In just 90 days, everything in his house was touched by the favor of God.

His children were blessed.

His crops were blessed.

His livestock multiplied.

His reputation shifted.

I feel a preaching point right here at that is: God doesn’t need a long time to turn things around. In three months, God did for Obed-Edom what others had waited years to see, God turned that thang around.

And that’s a shouting moment for somebody in the house, When the glory enters your house, if the Lord says so, sickness must leave. if the Lord says so Depression has to go. If the Lorddddddd says so, Poverty gets evicted. Division gets healed.

Here is the Super Shout!!! Others Will Notice Your Blessings.

In verse 12. “And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God.”

David heard about what was happening at Obed-Edom’s house.

When David heard about what was happening at Obed-Edom’s house, he was stirred to action.

Here’s what David did:

1. He Took Notice: David heard that Obed-Edom was being blessed, not just slightly, but supernaturally. This stirred his heart because David desired that blessing to be among the people of Israel.

2. He Changed His Approach: David realized he had mishandled the Ark before (using a cart instead of God’s prescribed way). After learning from his mistake, he made careful preparations, consulting the Law and the Levites.

3. He Retrieved the Ark with Gladness. David went back to Obed-Edom’s house, but this time with reverence and joy and he brought the Ark to Jerusalem. This return was not casual or routine; it was a celebration, with sacrifices, music, dancing, and worship.

David’s response shows that when you see where the presence of God is blessing others, don’t get jealous, get in position. Instead of envying Obed-Edom, David adjusted himself and welcomed the glory back the right way.

The Blessing is in the House.

People will notice when the glory rests in your house. You won’t have to promote it — the blessing will speak for itself.

David said, “I’ve got to go get that Ark!” But Obed-Edom had already discovered the key to revival.

Obed-Edom’s Response: Faithfulness (1 Chronicles 15:24, 1 Chronicles 26:4-8)

Obed-Edom didn’t get bitter when the Ark was moved. Instead of sulking, he followed the presence of God.

He became a gatekeeper in the temple.

His sons became leaders in worship.

His whole family became faithful servants in the house of God.

Once you’ve experienced the glory, you should never want to go back to life without it.

Closing:

So, maybe you weren’t the first choice. But the blessing is still coming to your house.

Maybe life dropped something heavy on you. But if you embrace the presence of God, it’ll turn into favor.

Maybe people don’t expect much from you. But when God shows up, your whole household changes.

Final Declaration:

And I don’t know who this might be for, but I believe that somebody’s house is about to be known, not for pain, not for poverty, not for brokenness, but for the presence of God, because the blessing will be in the house.

And that reminds me of a story about a small, run down house on the edge of a forgotten town. It sat at the end of a dirt road, surrounded by overgrown grass, peeling paint, and broken shutters.

The neighbors called it “that place”, the one no one wanted to visit, much less live in. A single mother named Lisa lived there with her three children. She was struggling — barely making ends meet, living off food stamps, and praying not to be evicted.

Lisa had once been on fire for God, but after the loss of her husband, and years of hardship, her faith had dimmed. She still believed, but she was tired.

The church people overlooked her. Friends moved on. She felt like she didn’t matter.

But one cold Sunday morning, her youngest child tugged on her coat and said, “Mommy, can we go to church today? I miss Jesus.”

Something broke in her. That day, she packed all three kids in their old minivan and drove to a small storefront church downtown. They sat in the back, unnoticed. But when the altar call came, she got up with tears in her eyes and said, God, if you still want me then I want You.

That week, something shifted.

Her kids stopped fighting each other.

Her oldest son, who had been failing in school, suddenly began excelling.

A neighbor, unprovoked, came and mowed her yard.

A stranger offered her a job she hadn’t applied for.

Within three months, her entire life began to change. Not because she got money. Not because she got a man. But because the presence of God had returned to her house.

People in the neighborhood began to say, “Have you noticed what’s happening to that old house at the end of the road?” They didn’t know what to call it, but we know the truth:

God moved in.

Just like Obed-Edom, Lisa didn’t ask for recognition. She didn’t seek fame. But when the presence of God found a resting place, blessings came that nobody could deny.

Somebody here might feel like Lisa. Overlooked. Forgotten. Left behind. But I came to tell you today:

You are not invisible to God.

Your house is not too broken.

Your story is not over.

Like Obed-Edom, and like Lisa. If you make room for the presence of God, even in a house no one notices, the blessing will find you.

Because when glory lives in your house, people who ignored you will start calling you Blessed
