Sermon Title: "Children: A Gift from God"
Text: Psalm 127:3 — “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”
Introduction:
Beloved in Christ, we live in a time where the value of children is often misunderstood or minimized. Psalm 127:3 offers a divine perspective that stands in contrast to the cultural noise around us. It reminds us of a fundamental truth: Children are not burdens; they are blessings. They are not accidents; they are assignments. God calls them His heritage and reward.
Let us consider three key truths drawn from this passage:
I. Children Are a Gift from God
The text begins with “Behold”—a word used to draw attention. It’s as if the psalmist is saying, “Pause and reflect on this important truth!” Children are not merely a biological result; they are a divine gift. They are not given by chance, but by the sovereign will of God.
Supporting Scriptures:
James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…”
Genesis 33:5 – Jacob, upon seeing his children, says: “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”
From conception to birth and beyond, every child is evidence of God’s grace.
II. Children Are a Heritage from the Lord
The word “heritage” means inheritance—something valuable passed down. In biblical times, inheritance was a family’s most treasured possession. To say that children are a “heritage from the Lord” is to say they are of lasting value. They are the Lord’s legacy entrusted into our hands.
Application:
This reminds parents, grandparents, and even the church family that we are stewards, not owners. How we raise them, guide them, and influence them matters.
Supporting Scriptures:
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 – “And these words… you shall teach them diligently to your children…”
Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go…”
God has entrusted children to us so that we might shape the future for His glory.
III. Children Are a Reward, Not a Burden
The second part of the verse says: “the fruit of the womb a reward.” While modern culture often sees children as interruptions to personal goals or as financial liabilities, God sees them as rewards—evidence of His favor.
Supporting Scriptures:
Genesis 4:1 – Eve says, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.”
Luke 18:16 – Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.”
Christ elevated children. He didn’t just tolerate them—He welcomed and blessed them. We should do the same.
Practical Implications:
For Parents: Cherish your role. It is sacred. God handpicked you to raise the children in your care.
For Churches: Invest in children’s ministries. These young lives are the future of the faith.
For Society: Let us value life, defend the vulnerable, and create spaces where children can flourish in godliness.
Conclusion:
Psalm 127:3 is not just poetry—it is theology. It tells us how God views children. And it reminds us to align our hearts with His.
Let us not take for granted the precious souls God has placed in our homes, churches, and communities. Let us nurture them, guide them, and point them to Jesus Christ—so that the next generation will rise up and call Him blessed.
Closing Prayer:
“Father, thank You for the precious gift of children. Help us to see them as You do—heritage, reward, and blessing. Give us wisdom to raise them in Your truth, and may they grow to know and follow You all the days of their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
