Proverbs 18:21 - "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
We have all been blessed with relationships that have brought joy, comfort, and support to our lives. There are those who have stood by us through thick and thin, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a comforting presence. However, it is in the darkest of moments that our true character is revealed.
The Sin of Character Assassination
There are those who, despite being shown love, kindness, and compassion, choose to repay their loved ones with venomous words. They wield their tongues like swords, cutting down those who have lifted them up. They spread false accusations, lies, and slander, destroying the very people who once cared for them.
James 3:9-10 - "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be."
The Consequences of Toxic Behavior
Those who engage in such sinful behavior will face the consequences of their actions. God sees all, and He will punish those who have used their words to destroy others. The Bible warns us that our words will be our witness, and on judgment day, we will be held accountable for every idle word spoken.
Matthew 12:36-37 - "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
Liberation from Toxicity
But there is hope for those who have been wronged. God is a God of justice, and He will liberate the oppressed from the hands of their tormentors. Those who have been destroyed by words can take comfort in knowing that God sees their pain and will bring justice to their abusers.
Psalm 103:6 - "The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed."
A Call to Repentance
To those who have used their words to destroy others, we say: repent and turn from your wicked ways. Seek forgiveness from God and from those you have harmed. Learn to use your words to uplift and encourage, rather than to tear down and destroy.
Proverbs 15:1 - "A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words stir up wrath."
May we all learn to harness the power of our words, using them to bring life and hope to those around us, rather than destruction and harm.
