INTRODUCTION:

The term “Christian” is widely used today, but often misunderstood. In Acts 11:26, believers were first called Christians in Antioch—not because they attended church, but because their lives reflected Christ. Being a Christian is not merely about religious affiliation or good deeds—it is about a transformational relationship with Jesus Christ.

Many people claim the title “Christian,” but not all live in alignment with its meaning. Biblically, a Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, and who lives by His teachings. This acceptance leads to a new life, new values, and a new identity.

In this Bible study, we will examine what it truly means to be a Christian, according to Scripture. We will explore the identity, lifestyle, and responsibilities that come with bearing the name of Christ.

1. A CHRISTIAN IS A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN BORN AGAIN

Being a Christian starts with a spiritual rebirth through faith in Jesus Christ.

a) A New Birth Experience (John 3:3)

Jesus said unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

b) Acceptance of Christ as Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9–10)

Salvation begins when we confess Jesus and believe in our hearts.

c) A New Creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Being a Christian means living a new life—old things are passed away.

d) Empowered by the Holy Spirit (John 1:12-13)

Believers are born of God and empowered to live as His children.

Biblical Example: Nicodemus sought understanding, and Jesus revealed the necessity of being born again (John 3:1–7).

2. A CHRISTIAN IS A DISCIPLE OF JESUS

A true Christian follows Christ not only in belief but in lifestyle.

a) A Lifelong Follower of Jesus (Luke 9:23)

Disciples deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Christ.

b) Living by Christ’s Teachings (John 8:31)

Abiding in God’s Word proves we are His true disciples.

c) Willing to Learn and Grow Spiritually (2 Peter 3:18)

Christians are constantly growing in grace and knowledge.

d) Committed to Obedience and Service (Matthew 28:19–20)

Following Jesus includes obeying His commands and teaching others.

Biblical Example: The early believers in Antioch were called Christians because their lifestyle mirrored Christ (Acts 11:26).

3. A CHRISTIAN LIVES A HOLY AND SEPARATED LIFE

Holiness is not optional—it is the identity and expectation of God’s people.

a) Called to be Holy (1 Peter 1:15–16)

Christians reflect God’s nature through a life of purity and obedience.

b) Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ (Romans 6:11)

We are no longer slaves to sin, but alive to righteousness.

c) Set Apart from Worldliness (2 Corinthians 6:17)

Christians live differently because they belong to a holy God.

d) Ambassadors of Christ’s Character (1 Peter 2:9)

We are called to show forth His praise and reflect His light.

Biblical Example: Joseph maintained holiness in Potiphar’s house and was identified as a man who feared God (Genesis 39:7–9).

4. A CHRISTIAN BEARS FRUIT THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Christians are recognised by the spiritual fruits they produce.

a) Evident Transformation in Character (Galatians 5:22–23)

The fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of Christ working in us.

b) A Life of Love, Joy, and Peace (John 15:5)

Christians abide in Christ and bear much fruit for His glory.

c) Faith and Good Works Go Together (James 2:17)

True faith expresses itself through action and service.

d) Salt and Light in the World (Matthew 5:13–16)

We influence our world positively through our testimony and good works.

Biblical Example: The life of Dorcas was filled with good works and acts of kindness, reflecting her faith (Acts 9:36–42).

CONCLUSION:

A Christian is not defined by denomination, attendance, or titles, but by relationship with Jesus, lifestyle of obedience, and fruitfulness through the Spirit. To be a Christian is to become like Christ—transformed in nature, committed in following, and empowered to live for God's glory.

As believers, let us not merely carry the name but reflect the nature of Christ in word, deed, and truth. Let the world see Jesus through you.
