INTRODUCTION:
Addiction is one of the strongest tools the enemy uses to keep people in bondage. It goes beyond bad habits—it becomes a controlling force that affects the mind, emotions, body, and spirit. Whether it is addiction to substances, sexual sin, gambling, entertainment, food, or destructive thoughts, the result is the same—bondage and brokenness.
Many believers struggle secretly with addictions, feeling ashamed, helpless, and unworthy to come before God. But the good news is that Jesus came to set the captives free. No chain is too strong for the power of God. What man cannot overcome by willpower, God can destroy by His Spirit.
There is a place of liberty in Christ, where addiction no longer rules over you. This sermon will show how to walk in the freedom Christ purchased and how to stay free through His grace and power.
1. UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF ADDICTION
Addiction is a spiritual, mental, and emotional bondage that requires spiritual intervention.
a) Addiction is a form of slavery (Romans 6:16)
When something controls your decisions, emotions, and actions, it has become your master.
b) It often starts with pleasure but ends in pain (Proverbs 14:12)
What begins as a harmless indulgence becomes a destructive stronghold.
c) Addiction affects your relationship with God (Isaiah 59:2)
Sin separates, and unrepented addictions hinder intimacy with God.
d) It is a tool of Satan to hinder destiny (John 10:10)
Satan uses addiction to steal time, joy, health, and purpose.
e) Biblical Example: Samson’s lustful addiction to strange women led to his downfall (Judges 16:1-21).
2. THE POWER OF CHRIST TO BREAK ADDICTION
There is no bondage that the blood of Jesus cannot destroy.
a) Christ came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8)
Addiction is one of the devil’s works, and it must be destroyed.
b) The anointing breaks the yoke (Isaiah 10:27)
Every yoke of addiction can be broken by divine power.
c) Jesus sets captives free (Luke 4:18)
He came to bring liberty to the bound and sight to the blind.
d) If the Son sets you free, you are truly free (John 8:36)
Freedom is not theoretical—it is real and available in Christ.
e) Biblical Example: The man of Gadara was addicted to demonic possession, but Jesus delivered him completely (Mark 5:1-20).
3. STEPS TO BREAK FREE FROM ADDICTION
Deliverance is available, but it requires your participation and discipline.
a) Acknowledge the bondage (Psalm 32:5)
You must be honest with yourself and with God about your struggle.
b) Repent and renounce it (Acts 3:19)
Turn away from the sin and break its hold over your life through confession.
c) Submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7)
Surrendering to God gives you the power to resist the enemy.
d) Replace the addiction with godly habits (Philippians 4:8)
Fill the void with prayer, Scripture, worship, and godly relationships.
e) Biblical Example: Zacchaeus was addicted to greed, but after meeting Jesus, he turned his life around completely (Luke 19:1-10).
4. STAYING FREE AFTER DELIVERANCE
Deliverance is not enough—you must walk in discipline and grace to remain free.
a) Renew your mind daily (Romans 12:2)
Transformation happens through constant renewal by the Word.
b) Avoid triggers and flee from temptation (2 Timothy 2:22)
Wisdom means avoiding environments, people, or habits that lead to relapse.
c) Be accountable to mature believers (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
Isolation feeds addiction—community strengthens deliverance.
d) Depend daily on the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
It’s not by might or power but by God’s Spirit that freedom is sustained.
e) Biblical Example: The woman caught in adultery was forgiven, but Jesus also told her to “go and sin no more” (John 8:11), indicating the need to remain free.
CONCLUSION:
Addiction may be strong, but Jesus is stronger. No matter how long you have been bound, the power of the cross is available to set you free. God’s desire is not only to deliver you but to give you the grace to live in lasting freedom.
Don’t settle for cycles of guilt and shame. Freedom is possible. Victory is available. You are not meant to be a slave—you are a child of God, destined to live in liberty, peace, and righteousness. Today is your day of deliverance.
