INTRODUCTION:
Closeness to God is not a burden—it is one of the highest honours ever granted to mankind. It is an open invitation from the Creator of the universe to walk in deep fellowship, divine communion, and unwavering companionship. God does not only want us to serve Him from a distance; He longs for us to draw near to Him and dwell in His presence as sons, daughters, and friends. This is a sacred privilege we must not take for granted.
In a world filled with distractions, uncertainties, and spiritual coldness, the nearness of God becomes our anchor and our joy. To be close to God is to be shielded from confusion, strengthened in weakness, and empowered to live victoriously. It is not just about church attendance or outward spirituality—it is about a living, breathing relationship with the Lord of Glory.
Throughout Scripture, we find that those who walked closely with God carried His presence, reflected His character, and enjoyed His favour. Today, God still calls us to that intimate place. In this message, we will explore the rich and life-transforming benefits of walking closely with our Heavenly Father, and how we can respond rightly to this holy invitation.
1. ACCESS TO DIVINE FELLOWSHIP
a) Closeness brings us into God's inner circle (Exodus 33:11)
Just as God spoke to Moses face-to-face as a friend, intimacy grants us the privilege of deep conversations with the Almighty.
b) God desires relationship, not just service (John 15:15)
He doesn’t call us servants alone, but friends. Being close means we are partners in His purposes and confidants of His heart.
c) Fellowship reveals God's will and direction (Psalm 25:14)
The secrets of the Lord are with those who fear Him. Closeness allows us to hear and understand His plans.
d) Intimacy silences spiritual noise (1 Kings 19:12-13)
In His presence, the still small voice becomes clear amidst the chaos of life.
e) Biblical Example: Enoch walked closely with God and was so aligned with Him that he was taken without seeing death (Genesis 5:24).
2. CONFIDENCE TO APPROACH GOD FREELY
a) Closeness removes fear and builds boldness (Hebrews 4:16)
We come boldly to the throne of grace when we understand that we belong in God's presence as His beloved.
b) Intimacy assures us of God's acceptance (Romans 8:15)
We are not orphans, but children who cry “Abba, Father.” Closeness gives us a secure identity in Him.
c) Guilt and condemnation are broken by nearness (Romans 8:1)
There is no condemnation for those who walk in the Spirit. The closer we are to God, the more we live free of shame.
d) The more time we spend with God, the more confident we become (Acts 4:13)
The boldness of Peter and John was evident because they had been with Jesus. Presence changes perception.
e) Biblical Example: Esther approached the king boldly because of favour—likewise, intimacy with God gives us access to divine intervention (Esther 5:1-3).
3. TRANSFORMATION INTO GOD'S LIKENESS
a) We become like those we are close to (2 Corinthians 3:18)
As we behold Him, we are changed into His image. Intimacy is the process of divine transformation.
b) Proximity to God refines our character (Galatians 5:22-23)
The fruits of the Spirit grow in the soil of God's presence. Closeness changes our attitudes and responses.
c) The fire of God's presence purifies us (Isaiah 6:5-7)
Just like Isaiah was purged in the presence of God, closeness to Him burns off impurities and makes us fit for purpose.
d) Holiness flows naturally from intimacy (1 Peter 1:15-16)
We don’t struggle to live holy lives when we are near the Holy One. His presence influences our daily walk.
e) Biblical Example: After spending time with God on Mount Sinai, Moses' face shone with glory—intimacy left a visible mark (Exodus 34:29-30).
4. ENJOYMENT OF GOD’S DIVINE FAVOUR
a) Closeness attracts God’s blessings and favour (Psalm 5:12)
The Lord surrounds the righteous with favour like a shield. Intimacy opens the doors of divine endorsement.
b) Favour follows those who dwell in God's presence (Genesis 39:2-4)
The Lord was with Joseph, and he prospered. Divine presence is the channel of supernatural success.
c) God fights for those close to Him (Exodus 14:14)
We don’t have to struggle when God is near. He arises for those who stay near His heart.
d) The favour of God gives you influence and access (Proverbs 3:4)
In the presence of God, we find favour with both God and man.
e) Biblical Example: Daniel walked with God and was distinguished with wisdom, excellence, and royal favour (Daniel 6:3,10).
5. SUSTAINED JOY AND PEACE IN LIFE
a) The presence of God is the fountain of joy (Psalm 16:11)
Fullness of joy is not found in things but in Him. The closer we are to God, the more joyful we become.
b) Peace floods the hearts of those near to God (Isaiah 26:3)
When we stay our minds on God, He keeps us in perfect peace.
c) Intimacy removes anxiety and replaces it with calm assurance (Philippians 4:6-7)
God’s nearness allows us to cast our cares on Him and experience His supernatural peace.
d) Joy becomes your strength when you live in His presence (Nehemiah 8:10)
Those who walk closely with God don’t faint in adversity because joy renews them daily.
e) Biblical Example: David, despite challenges, always found joy and peace in the presence of God through worship (Psalm 27:4-6).
CONCLUSION:
The privilege of being close to God is beyond words. It is the wellspring of true life, joy, direction, and power. This invitation is not extended to a select few—it is for every believer who chooses to draw near with a sincere heart. In His presence, we find everything our soul longs for and more.
Today, God is still saying, “Draw near to Me, and I will draw near to you.” The privilege is ours to enjoy, but it must be stewarded intentionally. Let us value, pursue, and prioritise intimacy with God above all else, for in closeness to Him, we find life in its richest form.
