INTRODUCTION:

Sin is the great separator between man and God. From the Garden of Eden until now, sin has always been the root cause of man's downfall, pain, and separation from divine blessings. It is more than an act—it is a condition of the heart that manifests through actions and inactions.

In today’s world, sin is often minimised or redefined, but God’s standard remains unchanged. Holiness is still His requirement, and sin still grieves His Spirit. For us to walk in power, fulfil destiny, and enjoy fellowship with God, we must confront sin squarely.

This sermon explores the types of sins as revealed in Scripture and how we, as believers, must deal with them sincerely and scripturally. You cannot conquer what you tolerate; you cannot overcome what you excuse. It’s time to deal with sin decisively.

1. ORIGINAL SIN – THE ROOT OF OUR FALLEN NATURE

Every human is born into sin because of Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden.

a) Inherited Sinfulness

We are not sinners because we sin; we sin because we are born sinners (Romans 5:12).

b) The Need for Redemption

Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse us from this inherited guilt (Romans 3:23-24).

c) Universal Effect

No one is exempt; all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory.

d) Christ, the Remedy

Jesus came as the second Adam to redeem us from the curse of sin (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Biblical Example – Adam and Eve's fall (Genesis 3)

2. PERSONAL SIN – OUR DAILY SHORTFALLS

These are the sins we commit through choice, knowingly or unknowingly.

a) Sin of Thought, Word, and Deed

Sin is not just what we do but also what we think and say (Matthew 5:28).

b) Daily Struggle

Believers must daily crucify the flesh (Galatians 5:24).

c) Call to Confession

If we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive (1 John 1:9).

d) Sanctification Journey

Holiness is a process and a commitment (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4).

Biblical Example – David’s repentance after his sin with Bathsheba (Psalm 51)

3. SINS OF COMMISSION AND OMISSION

Both what we do and what we fail to do can be sinful.

a) Commission – Doing What Is Forbidden

These include lying, stealing, gossiping, immorality, etc. (Exodus 20:1-17).

b) Omission – Neglecting What Is Commanded

Failing to pray, forgive, give, or evangelise (James 4:17).

c) God Sees Both Equally

Both forms grieve the Holy Spirit.

d) Repentance Is Required for Both

We must ask God to reveal even what we overlook.

Biblical Example – The Good Samaritan story illustrates sin of omission (Luke 10:30-37)

4. SECRET AND PRESUMPTUOUS SINS

These are hidden sins and those committed with an arrogant assumption of mercy.

a) Secret Sins – Hidden from Men, Known to God

These include lust, envy, bitterness, etc. (Psalm 90:8).

b) Presumptuous Sins – Deliberate and Arrogant

Continuing in sin while assuming grace will always cover it (Psalm 19:13).

c) They Defile and Destroy

They hinder prayers and provoke judgment.

d) Need for Humility and Transparency

Confession brings cleansing and restoration.

Biblical Example – Achan’s secret sin led to Israel's defeat (Joshua 7)

5. THE UNPARDONABLE AND DESTRUCTIVE SINS

Some sins have eternal consequences when not repented of.

a) Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

This is the hardened rejection of the Holy Spirit’s conviction (Matthew 12:31).

b) Sexual Immorality and Idolatry

These defile the body, the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

c) Living in Rebellion

Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23).

d) Living Without Godly Fear

We must not treat sin lightly (Hebrews 10:26-27).

Biblical Example – Judas Iscariot's betrayal and unrepentance (Matthew 27:3-5)

CONCLUSION:

Sin is the greatest enemy of your spiritual growth and intimacy with God. It is not enough to know about sin—we must intentionally fight against it. The devil thrives in darkness, but when sin is exposed to the light of God’s Word and Spirit, it loses its grip.

Christ has already paid the price for our victory over sin. By grace, through faith, and by walking in the Spirit, we can live holy lives pleasing to God. Do not cover sin—confess it, forsake it, and ask for grace to live above it. Your destiny depends on it.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Lord, deliver me from every inherited and personal sin that holds me bound.

2. I receive grace to overcome secret and presumptuous sins in Jesus’ name.

3. Father, purge my heart and make me holy before You.

4. Let the fire of the Holy Ghost consume every sinful desire in my life.

5. Lord, help me to walk daily in Your righteousness and truth.
