MOTHER’S DAY: THE HONOUR OF MOTHERHOOD

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Proverbs 31:25–30

"Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised."

Supporting Texts: Exodus 20:12, 2 Timothy 1:5, Luke 1:26–38, Ruth 1:16–17, Genesis 3:20

INTRODUCTION:

Motherhood is a divine calling and a precious gift from God. From the very beginning of creation, God designed the role of the mother as essential to the family and the fulfilment of His purposes on earth. She is a nurturer, an intercessor, a leader, and a vessel of divine compassion.

In Proverbs 31, we see a portrait of a virtuous woman—a godly mother whose value is far above rubies. Her impact is seen in her family, her community, and in the way she walks in wisdom and strength. Today, we celebrate mothers—not just for what they do, but for who they are in God's eyes.

This message seeks to honour mothers and call attention to their irreplaceable role in shaping generations, building homes, and influencing nations through godly character and sacrificial love.

1. MOTHERS ARE GOD'S STRATEGIC INSTRUMENTS

God uses mothers to carry out divine purposes on earth.

a) Mothers birth generations and legacies

(Genesis 3:20) Eve was called the “mother of all living.”

b) Through mothers, destinies are nurtured

(2 Timothy 1:5) Timothy's faith was first found in his grandmother and mother.

c) They are vessels of compassion and comfort

(Isaiah 66:13) As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.

d) Mothers are spiritual gatekeepers of the home

(Proverbs 14:1) Every wise woman buildeth her house.

Biblical Example: Hannah prayed and vowed before the Lord and gave birth to Samuel, one of Israel's greatest prophets (1 Samuel 1:10–28).

2. GODLY MOTHERS WALK IN FEAR OF THE LORD

Their character is rooted in reverence for God, not outward charm.

a) The fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom

(Proverbs 31:30) A woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

b) They train up children in the way of the Lord

(Proverbs 22:6) Train up a child in the way he should go.

c) They speak with wisdom and kindness

(Proverbs 31:26) Her tongue is ruled by the law of kindness.

d) They set an example of holy living

(Titus 2:3–5) Older women should teach younger women to love their families and be discreet.

Biblical Example: Lois and Eunice passed on genuine faith to young Timothy, shaping his ministry (2 Timothy 1:5).

3. MOTHERS ARE WORTHY OF HONOUR AND PRAISE

Scripture commands children and families to esteem and bless mothers.

a) Honour brings generational blessings

(Exodus 20:12) Honour thy father and thy mother.

b) Mothers deserve public praise and recognition

(Proverbs 31:28) Her children rise and call her blessed.

c) A husband must affirm and appreciate her labour

(Proverbs 31:28b–29) Her husband also, and he praiseth her.

d) Heaven recognises the sacrifice of mothers

(Hebrews 6:10) God is not unrighteous to forget your labour of love.

Biblical Example: Mary, the mother of Jesus, was honoured by God and generations as "blessed among women" (Luke 1:28, 48).

CONCLUSION:

Mothers are not only caregivers but divine instruments in the hands of God. They carry strength, wisdom, grace, and enduring love. Whether biological or spiritual, their role is sacred and should never be taken for granted.

As we celebrate Mother's Day, let us remember to honour, support, and pray for our mothers. Let children rise with gratitude, husbands with praise, and the church with blessings. May every mother know she is valued and deeply loved by God and by us.

PRAYER POINTS:

1. Father, thank You for the gift of godly mothers in our lives.

2. Lord, strengthen every mother who is weary or burdened.

3. Let the legacy of faith in mothers be passed on to generations.

4. Raise more women who will fear the Lord and walk in wisdom.

5. Let honour, peace, and joy be the reward of every faithful mother.
