The RESURRECTION Of DELIVERANCE-I—Mark 16:1-14(:1-20)
Sunday & Wednesday the week before last, we looked at:
‘The DEATH Of DELIVERANCE’—Mk. 15:1-47
Today, we’ll delve into:
The RESURRECTION Of DELIVERANCE—Mark 16:1-14(:1-20)
Need:
People struggle with various means of so-called ‘deliverance.’
We desperately want to be freed from any difficulty in our lives.
People without the resurrected Jesus, are left to make sense of the obvious ‘incompleteness’ of everything around them.
Their attempts to ‘make sense of’ the never-ending damage caused by a sin-sick world, are limited to what they can see & touch. They live a limited & a limiting life with blinders on.
Most resort to their own means of surviving the collateral of sin-sickness.
They try to stay busy, so they won’t be forced to consider the reality of satisfaction & the reality of death. Because, their busy-ness ‘temporarily distracts’ & ‘seemingly delivers’ them from death, by a poorly constructed shadow of what seems to them, to be ‘life.’
However, True deliverance comes thru the resurrected & thus ever-living Lord Jesus alone!
Mark records some of the historical events that surround the actual resurrection of Jesus Christ.
And that is because:
True Deliverance is found in the resurrected Jesus....He IS our Deliverance!
But:
?How” or “Why? is true deliverance found in Jesus’ resurrection?

ANTICIPATION(:1-4)
Explanation:(:1-4)
:1—“Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, & Salome bought spices, that they might come & anoint Him.”
“Mary the mother of James”—
Mk. 15:40, 47—“There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less & of Joses, & Salome,”.....“And Mary Magdalene & Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.”
These three women are named who would be recognized by the immediate audience. “Salome” is mentioned by name only here & in Mk. 15:40.
They “bought spices” because, by Jewish law, common selling for any reason was forbidden on the Sabbath.
•Although during Passover Week, the Jews allowed the exchange of money & the purchase of animals for sacrifice, but ironically they allowed it within the temple confines....An issue to which Jesus vehemently took offense.
Mk. 11:15-17(Mat. 21:12-13; Lk. 19:45-46)—“So they[Jesus & the 12 disciples] came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple & began to drive out those who bought & sold in the temple, & overturned the tables of the money changers & the seats of those who sold doves. And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’””
“That they might come & anoint Him.”—
Both “Marys” & “Salome” came to Jesus’ tomb with at least one express purpose: “that they might come & anoint Him.”
•Both “Mary Magdalene” & the other “Mary”, had already observed that Jesus’ body had been properly buried in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus(Mk. 15:46-47; Jn. 19:38-42).
•These women, as well as others, were emotionally tied to Jesus’, as ministers to Him throughout His ministry among them(Mat. 27:55; Mk. 15:41; Lk. 8:1-3).
Mat. 27:55—“And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar,”
Mk. 15:40-41—At Jesus’ crucifixion,—“There were also women looking on from afar,.... “who also followed Him & ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, & many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.”
Lk. 8:1-3—“Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city & village, preaching & bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, & certain women who had been healed of evil spirits & infirmities--Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, & Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, & Susanna, & many others who provided for Him from their substance.”
:2—“Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.”
“Very early in the morning”—At dawn; During the day-break watch; Before the “sun had” fully “risen.”
By the time the women had reached the tomb, “the sun had risen.”
:3—“And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?””
The women approached their task of anointing Jesus’ body, evidently without thinking thru the difficulty of removing “the stone” that sealed the “tomb.”
The women talked “among themselves” attempting to reach a logical solution for getting “the tomb” opened.
They realized that they needed other people to “roll the stone away.”
As they started out, the women probably did not know that on the Sabbath day, “the tomb” had been sealed & that a Roman guard had been set there....
Mat. 27:62-66—“On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation[Mk. 15:42], the chief priests & Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ “Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night & steal Him away, & say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” So they went & made the tomb secure, sealing the stone & setting the guard.”
:4—“But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large.”
However, to their surprise, “when” the women “looked up” to Jesus’ tomb, “they saw that the stone” which had been set in place at the mouth of the tomb, “had been rolled away.”
•It’s possible that they also saw evidence that the tomb had been sealed & guarded by Roman order & soldiers(See :3 & Mat. 27:62-66; 28:4).
•Mat. 28:2-4—“And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, & came & rolled back the stone from the door, & sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, & his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, & became like dead men.”
“The stone had been rolled away” because an angel of the Lord had rolled back the stone(Mat. 28:2).
“The stone had been rolled away” even though(“although”(NASB)) “the stone” itself “was very large.”
•That lets us know that the women were being faithful to honor Jesus, despite their not having any certain means of removing “the stone.”

Job 22:21—Eliphaz the Temanite informed Job,—“Now acquaint yourself with Him[God], & be at peace; Thereby good will come to you.”
Php. 4:6-7—“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer & supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; & the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds through Christ Jesus.”

COMPREHENSION(:5-6)
Explanation:(:5-6)Surprise
:5—“And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; & they were alarmed.”
With the stone having been rolled away from the tomb(16:4) the women(Mary Magdalene, Mary of James, & Salome--:1) actually “entered the tomb.” They did so in order to further(cf.-15:46-47) anoint Jesus’ dead body(16:1).
However, upon “entering the tomb”, the women “saw a young man” who was seated “on the right side” of the place where Jesus’ body had been laid(:6). This particular “young man” was “clothed in a long white robe.”
•The “long...robe” “was a loose outer garment for men extending to the feet, worn by kings, priests, & persons of rank”; “A stately robe” of dignitaries; Gr = stolh—English = ‘stole’(as in a ‘mink stole’).—Thayer
•Mark’s “young man” is described by Matthew as “an angel of the Lord”(Mat. 28:2-3), whose “countenance was like lightening” & whose “clothing” was “as white as snow”(Mat. 28:3).
•Luke mentions that there were “two men”, who “stood by them”, & both of them were clothed “in shining garments”(Lk. 24:4).
The angel’s(“young man’s”) presence in the tomb was unexpected & shocking to the women. His presence caused the women to be “alarmed” or utterly astounded to the point of being terrified.
:6—“But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.”
The “young man in a long white robe”(:5) spoke to the women. He reassured, & encouraged them, by first telling them that there was no need for them to be “alarmed” or to fear.
The “young man in a long white robe”(:5) also informed the women that he was aware of whom they were looking for. He stated to them that they were “seeking Jesus of Nazareth” or rather “Jesus the Nazarene.” He further identified “Jesus the Nazarene” as the One who “was crucified.”
The “young man in a long white robe”(:5) also informed the women that the “Jesus” they sought “is risen” from death!
The “young man in a long white robe”(:5) then informed the women that the “risen” “Jesus” was “not here.” That is, the now resurrected & living “Jesus” was “not” in or around the tomb!
The “young man in a long white robe”(:5) lastly invited the women to observe(“see”)for themselves, “the place where” “Jesus’” dead body had been “laid”(by Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus--Jn. 19:38-42).

Ephesians 1:15-23—“Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus & your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom & revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, & what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead & seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality & power & might & dominion, & every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, & gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
Eph. 3:14-19—“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven & earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted & grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width & length & depth & height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
