Researching the Will of God in Life Decisions
Turn in your Bible to Proverbs 3:5-6 and say, "Amen" when you are there.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Jeremiah 29:11 – "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
Good morning, church!
Today, we are diving into a very important and relevant topic—how we can research and discern the will of God when we face life decisions.
Whether it's choosing a career, a spouse, or simply navigating the challenges of daily life, we all encounter moments when we need divine direction.
So, how do we make sure that we are aligning ourselves with God's will in these decisions?
Before we get started, let me ask you this question: Have you ever felt lost when faced with a major life decision?
Maybe you’ve experienced uncertainty or fear, wondering if you were making the right choice. Today, I want to encourage you with the truth that God’s will is not a mystery hidden from us.
He wants to lead us, guide us, and give us peace in every decision we make.
1. Trusting God in All Things
In Proverbs 3:5-6, God tells us to trust Him with all of our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. Life is full of decisions, but trusting God involves surrendering our plans to His wisdom. We don’t have to know everything, but we are called to trust the One who does.
Let me tell you about a man named John, a successful businessman who, for years, relied on his own understanding to make decisions. He had achieved everything he thought he wanted—wealth, status, and security. But one day, he felt a tug on his heart to serve in a mission field abroad. He was terrified. He had never left his comfortable life, and this change would seem like everything he had worked for was slipping away.
John spent countless hours in prayer, seeking God's direction.
Finally, he came across Proverbs 3:5-6, and it was as though the verse jumped off the page. He had been leaning on his own understanding for too long. That moment of surrender changed his life. He chose to trust God's plan for his future, and by doing so, he saw God provide in ways he never imagined. John not only went on the mission field but also saw his faith grow deeper than ever before.
2. Transforming Your Mind to Discern God's Will
Romans 12:2 tells us that we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds in order to know God’s will. Our decisions are influenced by the world’s way of thinking, but the Word of God has the power to renew and reshape our thoughts. When we allow God to transform our minds, we begin to see His will more clearly.
A young woman named Sarah was deciding whether to stay in a toxic relationship or move on. She was confused because the world told her to fight for love, but deep inside, she knew God was calling her to let go. She spent time in prayer, meditating on Scripture, and listening to wise counsel from a church community. As her mind was renewed through God's Word, she was able to make a bold decision to move forward in faith, trusting that God had a better future for her. Sarah’s decision brought peace to her heart, and she later saw God lead her to a fulfilling ministry opportunity.
3. The Assurance of God's Plan
In Jeremiah 29:11, God promises that He has plans for our future—plans to prosper us and give us hope. God's plans are always for our good. We don’t need to be afraid of making mistakes because God is always with us, guiding us and leading us toward what He has prepared for us.
Let me share a story about Mark, who had struggled with making major life decisions. He had always been afraid that he would choose the wrong path and miss God’s will for his life. One day, Mark came across Jeremiah 29:11 and realized that God’s plans for him were filled with hope and a future, not harm.
This realization freed him from the constant pressure of perfection. With that assurance, he stepped out in faith, and God opened doors in unexpected ways, leading Mark to a place of purpose and fulfillment.
4. How to Seek God's Will in Your Decisions:
Begin by seeking God's presence in prayer. Talk to Him honestly about your concerns and listen for His voice.
Dive into the Bible. God’s Word is our guide, and it speaks life into our decisions.
Seek godly advice from trusted mentors and leaders who are walking closely with the Lord.
Often, God's will comes with peace. If you don’t have peace, it might not be the right decision.
Once you feel you’ve heard from God, take a step of obedience, trusting Him every step of the way.
