INTRODUCTION:

Evangelism is not an option for believers; it is a divine mandate given by Jesus Christ. The Great Commission, as recorded in Matthew 28:19-20, is Christ’s final instruction to His disciples before ascending to heaven. It is a call to take the gospel to all nations, making disciples and baptising them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The urgency of evangelism cannot be overstated. Many souls are perishing daily without the knowledge of Christ. As ambassadors of Christ, we are called to share the message of salvation with boldness and compassion. The responsibility of spreading the gospel is not limited to pastors and missionaries; every believer is called to participate in the work of evangelism.

This message will explore why evangelism is essential, how we can effectively fulfil the Great Commission, and the rewards of obeying Christ’s command. May we be stirred to action as we embrace our divine assignment!

1. EVANGELISM IS A DIVINE COMMAND

It is not a suggestion but an obligation for all believers.

a) Jesus commanded us to go into all the world (Mark 16:15)

Evangelism is a clear instruction, not a personal choice.

b) The gospel must be preached before Christ returns (Matthew 24:14)

The fulfilment of this command is linked to the second coming of Christ.

c) Every believer is called to be a witness (Acts 1:8)

The Holy Spirit empowers us to share the gospel.

d) Silence in evangelism is disobedience to Christ (Ezekiel 3:18-19)

Failing to warn sinners makes us accountable.

e) Biblical Example: The Early Church’s Obedience (Acts 8:4-5)

The first Christians preached everywhere despite persecution.

2. WHY EVANGELISM IS NECESSARY

Souls are at stake, and the gospel is their only hope.

a) Many are perishing without Christ (Romans 6:23)

Without salvation, eternal death is inevitable.

b) Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:14-15)

If we do not preach, how will they believe?

c) The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few (Luke 10:2)

Many souls are ready for salvation, but workers are needed.

d) The gospel brings transformation to lives and societies (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Christ’s message changes individuals and communities.

e) Biblical Example: Jonah’s Preaching to Nineveh (Jonah 3:1-10)

An entire city repented because of one man’s obedience.

3. HOW TO EFFECTIVELY EVANGELISE

Evangelism requires wisdom, strategy, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

a) Be a living testimony of Christ (Matthew 5:16)

Let your lifestyle reflect the gospel you preach.

b) Use every opportunity to share Christ (Colossians 4:5-6)

Every conversation can be an avenue for evangelism.

c) Depend on the Holy Spirit for boldness (Acts 4:31)

The Spirit empowers us to witness fearlessly.

d) Use different methods: one-on-one, media, and crusades (1 Corinthians 9:22)

Adapt your approach to reach different groups of people.

e) Biblical Example: Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26-39)

Philip followed the Spirit’s leading and led one man to Christ, impacting a nation.

4. THE REWARDS OF EVANGELISM

God blesses those who obey His mandate.

a) There is great joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7)

Evangelism brings joy to God and His angels.

b) Soul-winners shine as stars forever (Daniel 12:3)

God honours those who lead others to righteousness.

c) God rewards those who preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 3:8-9)

Every effort in evangelism will be rewarded.

d) Winning souls makes us wise (Proverbs 11:30)

Evangelism is the highest form of wisdom.

e) Biblical Example: Paul’s Reward for His Labour (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

Paul received a crown of righteousness for his faithful service.

5. CHALLENGES TO EVANGELISM AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM

Many obstacles hinder evangelism, but God gives victory.

a) Fear of rejection (2 Timothy 1:7)

God has given us a spirit of boldness, not fear.

b) Lack of knowledge (2 Timothy 2:15)

Study the Word to be equipped for evangelism.

c) Persecution and opposition (Matthew 5:10-12)

Suffering for the gospel is an honour.

d) Indifference and spiritual laziness (Romans 13:11-12)

Wake up and be passionate about the Great Commission.

e) Biblical Example: The Apostles’ Boldness Despite Persecution (Acts 5:40-42)

They rejoiced in suffering for Christ and kept preaching.

CONCLUSION:

The Great Commission is not just a mission; it is a mandate. Every believer has a responsibility to share the gospel and lead souls to Christ. The urgency of evangelism cannot be ignored because lives are at stake. The world is in desperate need of salvation, and we are the vessels God wants to use.

Let us rise and obey the call. Let us be bold in our witness, diligent in our work, and passionate about seeing souls saved. May we never be found guilty of neglecting our divine assignment. The time to evangelise is now!
