INTRODUCTION:
In times of need, whether due to personal struggles, crises, or uncertainty, our instinct should be to draw nearer to God. The Bible assures us that God is not distant or indifferent; He is a very present help in our troubles. In this sermon we shall analyze how we can approach God with confidence, receive His mercy, and find grace to help us in our times of need. We will examine the biblical principles and examples that illustrate the importance of seeking God during difficult times.
1. GOD AS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH
God is our ultimate source of help and strength in times of need. Here are key insights regarding His nature as a refuge:
a) A Very Present Help: Psalm 46:1 reminds us that God is a refuge and strength, always available to assist us in our struggles.
b) Near to the Brokenhearted: God draws close to those who are hurting and in distress (Psalm 34:18).
c) Comfort in Troubling Times: In our times of need, God provides comfort that surpasses human understanding (Philippians 4:7).
d) Strength in Weakness: Our weaknesses can become a channel for God’s strength when we rely on Him (2 Corinthians 12:9).
e) Hope in Despair: God’s presence brings hope, even in our darkest hours (Isaiah 41:10).
Biblical Example:
David frequently turned to God in times of distress, as seen in his psalms. Psalm 34 illustrates how he sought the Lord during hardships and experienced His delivering power.
2. THE CALL TO DRAW NEAR
Drawing near to God requires intentionality and faith. Here are principles to consider when approaching Him:
a) Coming with Confidence: Hebrews 4:16 encourages us to approach God with confidence, knowing He welcomes us.
b) Seeking His Presence: James 4:8 reminds us that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of our relationship with Him.
c) Setting Aside Distractions: To draw near, we must prioritize our time with God and eliminate distractions (Matthew 6:6).
d) Praying in Faith: Prayer is a vital means of drawing near to God; we are invited to cast our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7).
e) Listening for His Voice: Engaging in two-way communication involves not just speaking but also listening to God’s guidance and reassurance.
Biblical Example:
The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Mark 5:25-34) pressed through the crowd to touch Jesus, demonstrating the effort and faith required to draw near to Him for healing.
3. RECEIVING MERCY AND GRACE
When we draw near to God, we encounter His mercy and grace, which sustain us in times of need. Here are insights into this aspect:
a) Mercy in Our Failures: God’s mercy is available to us when we falter; His kindness leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4).
b) Grace to Help: God’s grace empowers us to face our circumstances (2 Corinthians 9:8).
c) Provision in Need: Philippians 4:19 assures us that God will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory.
d) Strength for Every Situation: God provides strength and encouragement during our trials (Isaiah 40:29-31).
e) Peace in Chaos: God’s grace allows us to experience peace, even when external circumstances are turbulent (John 14:27).
Biblical Example:
The Apostle Paul relied on God’s grace during his hardships, experiencing God’s sufficiency even when he felt weak (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
4. PRACTICAL STEPS TO DRAW NEAR TO GOD
Drawing near to God in times of need involves practical actions:
a) Engaging in Prayer: Develop a habit of regular prayer, particularly during challenging times (Philippians 4:6).
b) Reading Scripture: The Word of God is a source of strength and encouragement (Psalm 119:105).
c) Worship and Praise: Worship helps us focus on God’s greatness rather than our problems (Psalm 95:1-3).
d) Fellowship with Believers: Sharing burdens with fellow believers fosters encouragement and support (Galatians 6:2).
e) Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness: Recall past instances where God has helped you; this strengthens faith for current needs (Psalm 77:11-12).
Biblical Example:
Moses drew near to God during times of need, especially when interceding for the Israelites. His relationship with God grew deeper through prayer and obedience (Exodus 33:11).
CONCLUSION:
In times of need, we have the profound privilege of drawing near to God. He invites us to approach Him confidently, offering mercy, grace, and strength. As we intentionally seek His presence, we discover that He is not only our refuge but also our source of hope and help. Let us cultivate the habit of drawing near to God, allowing His grace to sustain us and transform our challenges into opportunities for deeper intimacy with Him.
