Luke 4: 14-21 Jesus Mission or Ministry

1. Jesus’s Ministry

• Jesus starts his ministry on the Sabbath in his hometown of Nazareth

• He goes to the synagogue, picks up the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, and reads,

• Jesus shares His Mission “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:16-19). These are the very words of Isaiah

• He rolls up the scroll, gives it back to the attendant and sits down. Then he says to the people of the synagogue, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (v. 21).

• If We will do like Jesus we will have God’s favor

• Our ministry will have concern for people on the margins of society, including the sick and the poor.

• Jesus comes home to Galilee “in the power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:14).

• He has been baptized by John, and the Holy Spirit has descended on him.

• He has been led by the Spirit in the wilderness and has been tempted by the devil.

6. Our Ministry for our Church, is to get the “goes” Jesus goes

• Jesus is a great healer. He goes directly from the synagogue in Nazareth to the town of Capernaum, where he cleanses a man with an unclean spirit,

• Then he goes and heals the mother-in-law of Simon Peter,

• He goes and cleanses a leper and heals a paralytic.

• Jesus goes and helps the needy enjoy the fullness of life.

• Jesus goes in The spirit of the lord The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.

• I go because he has anointed me
