Romans 12:10-13 NIV
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
When we start following Christ, we’re adopted into a big family.
We have brothers, sisters, moms and dads who are called alongside us for our lifetimes.
Be devoted to one another like family.
Honor one another.
Share with those are in need.
Practice hospitality.
The early church was marked by three things:
1. Healing and Miracles
2. Care for the poor
3. Hospitality
Luke 10:1-2, 5 NIV The Story of the Good Samaritan)
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 5 "When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.'
Often, we need to share our homes before we share the Good News!
40 AD - 1,000 Christians in Roman Empire
350 AD - 32 million Christians in the Roman Empire
How do we know if we’re hospitable?
1. We love having people in our home for meals.
2. We go out of the way to make people feel comfortable.
3. We turn every conversation back to the other person.
4. We’re always looking for those on the margins.
We’re all called to be hosts!!!
Ask them to sit with us.
Story of Garvin
Chrysostom (400 AD) – “This was an angelic commonwealth, not to call anything of theirs, their own. Forthwith, the root of evil was cut out. None reproached, none envied, none grudged, no pride, no contempt was there. The poor man knew no shame and the rich man no haughtiness.”
