Personal Reflection: The Power of God’s Constant Presence

Recently I read a testimony of the greatness of God and what it meant in a difficult “season” in this particular individual’s life. I share it with you today:

I’ll never forget a moment in my life when the greatness of God became more than just something I read or heard about—it became real. A few years ago, I found myself in a place of complete uncertainty. A sudden job loss had shaken my family, and we didn’t know how we would make ends meet. Bills were piling up, and every day felt like walking through a thick fog with no direction in sight. I remember praying, but I’ll be honest—at times, my prayers felt more like desperate whispers than declarations of faith.

One night, I opened my Bible to Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Those words were both a gentle nudge and a challenge for me to stop striving, stop panicking, and start trusting the One who holds the universe together. I realized that if God could create the heavens and the earth, how much more could He handle the chaos of my circumstances?

It wasn’t an instant fix. Day by day, in ways I didn’t always notice, God provided. A friend showed up with groceries, a random job opportunity came my way, and somehow, we made it through. But what truly changed wasn’t just our situation—it was my heart. I began to understand that God’s greatness wasn’t just about His ability to fix what’s broken; it was about His constant presence, carrying me through when I felt too weak to stand.

Looking back now, I see how those difficult months deepened my faith. Just like the psalmist declares, “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:7). I experienced firsthand that God’s greatness isn’t confined to the big, miraculous moments—it’s in the steady, everyday provision, the peace that surpasses understanding, and the quiet assurance that He never leaves us.

I share this because I believe we’ve all faced moments where life felt overwhelming, where the storm seemed too great. But just as I discovered, those are the times when we’re invited to lean into the greatness of our “Big God.” My prayer is that you will see His hand in your life, just as I saw it in mine, and know with confidence that He is always for you.

Introduction

• "Have you considered the magnitude of God’s power, wisdom, and presence in every aspect of your life?"

• Today’s message seeks to lead us into a deeper understanding and awe of God’s greatness – His infinite power, unchanging presence, and boundless ability to overcome any challenge.

I. God’s Greatness in Creation

Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

A. The vast scope of God’s creation demonstrates the greatness of His power.

1. From the stars in the sky to the complexity of a human being, all things testify to a "Big God" who orchestrates all creation with precision and purpose.

B. Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

1. Encourage the congregation to marvel at creation as an expression of God’s greatness.

2. Reflect on how this same God who formed the galaxies also crafted each one of us with intentionality (Psalm 139:13-14).

II. God’s Omnipresence in Our Lives

Psalm 139:7-10 – “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?”

A. God’s presence is not limited by time or space.

1. Wherever we are, God is near – guiding, sustaining, and comforting us in every trial and triumph.

B. Hebrews 13:5 – “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

1. Biblical evidence of His constant presence…

2. This assurance should inspire confidence and courage.

3. As Christians we should trust “God's steady presence”, especially in moments of uncertainty or doubt, knowing He will never abandon His people.

III. God’s Unlimited Power to Overcome Challenges

Matthew 19:26 – “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

A. Explore examples of God’s power at work in Scripture. Discuss instances like

1. Parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14)

2. Victory at Jericho (Joshua 6),

3. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28)

• These events illustrate that no circumstance is beyond the reach of God’s intervention.

B. Isaiah 41:10 – “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

1. Challenge the congregation to actively place their trust in God’s ability to accomplish what seems impossible, both in their personal lives and in the world around them.

IV. God’s Power Over All Things

Colossians 1:16-17 – “For in Him all things were created…and in Him all things hold together.”

A. Teach the concept of God’s superiority – He sustains and governs all creation.

1. No force, no power, no authority can rival Him. (He’s to BIG!)

B. Job 42:2 – “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

1. This trust in God’s sovereignty provides hope even in the midst of hardship or confusion.

C. As devoted followers of Christ (disciples), we should yield our plans to God. How do we do this?

1. We listen to Him.

2. We trust in His perfect will.

3. We surrender to His perfect timing.

• All of which often exceeds human understanding.

Closing Story: The Power of God in Jane’s Life

Jane was no stranger to hardship. For years, she battled aggressive cancer—a diagnosis that left her and her family reeling. Treatment after treatment seemed to fail, and the weight of constant bad news began to strip away her hope. Yet, Jane clung to her faith, praying daily for strength and often meditating on the truth of Matthew 19:26, "With God, all things are possible."

Her community of faith rallied around her, uniting in prayer for a miracle. Jane recalls one Sunday when her pastor shared a sermon on Isaiah 41:10, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” That verse became her lifeline. She began to pray less for outcomes and more for God’s presence and strength in the midst of her storm.

One day, after months of seeking treatment without improvement, Jane faced medical scans that would determine whether the cancer had spread further. She entered the hospital with a peace she couldn’t explain. “I knew God was with me,” she later shared. To the astonishment of her doctors, not only had the cancer stopped progressing, but there was no longer any trace of the disease. They called it a medical anomaly; she called it the hand of her Big God.

The healing led Jane to a deeper understanding of God’s power. She realized her greatest blessing wasn’t just the healing itself but the reliance on God she had cultivated through the process. She began volunteering at her church, supporting others who were going through their own battles, always emphasizing the importance of trusting God’s timing and sovereignty.

Jane’s story is one of many that illustrate the greatness of God—His ability to work beyond human understanding and to bring peace even in the midst of life’s fiercest struggles. It reminds us to echo the words of Romans 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

God’s presence transformed Jane’s trial into a testimony, and her life now serves as a living reminder to those around her that God’s power is unwavering and His love is unending.
