“He who comes to equity must come with clean hands”- Legal maxim.
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV
The Christian life is a call to holiness and holy living. It does not allow for any compromise. A person who claims to be a Christian must follow the Bible diligently. So, when a Christian joins with unbelievers to commit crimes, they have violated the very essence of their faith. The Bible is very clear on this. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-15:
“Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What agreement does Christ have with Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?” HCSB
The same questions raised in this passage is true for those who are charged with enforcement of rights, rules and regulations. They must ensure that justice is not just done, it must be seen to be done. So, when an official is seen and communes with criminals, he automatically becomes one of them. How do you explain how an official is giving advance information to those who should not be privy to such information, thereby giving them the opportunity to either flee or destroy valuable evidence? When this happens , whole neighborhoods are tipped off as to the action to be taken by the officials. Of course, they all flee away, and establish fake alibis, making a mockery of the justice system.
What of a fugitive who is running from the law? Shouldn’t the official be the one to take action against him? Why should he continue to protect a fugitive who is running from the law?
What happens when an official is present in close spaces like an attic with drug dealers and convicted felons? What are they doing in that location? What legal and legitimate business are they conducting in an attic in another state? Why are they crossing state lines to commit crimes? Who is the supervising officer over such official? When did he go missing from his place of employment? How was he conducting his official duties from an attic? Why are his supervisors turning a blind eye to such a nefarious act and carrying on with business as usual?
What happens when an official hands over government equipment to those that are not in government employment? Why are they empowering ordinary people who have no business with such equipment? What do they do with sensitive information that they normally shouldn’t have access to?
Still more questions. What is the supervisor trying to achieve by giving cover and protection to a corrupt official? Just because they are in charge of affairs doesn’t give them the right to protect erring employees. Furthermore, in giving protection to the officer, the supervisor is also indirectly protecting the fellow criminals who are his bedfellows.
We close today with Psalm 53.
“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. Every one of them has turned aside; They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one. Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God? There they are in great fearWhere no fear was, For God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you; You have put them to shame, Because God has despised them. Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When God brings back the captivity of His people, Let Jacob rejoice, and Israel be glad.” NKJV
