IMPLICATIONS From JESUS’ BURIAL & RESURRECTION-III—Luke 23:50--24:12

Need:

The death, burial, & resurrection of Jesus is historical fact.

Trust in those facts, is a key factor in a person’s being ‘born-again’, heaven bound, ministers in God’s Kingdom, & a vital part of the body of Christ.

And likewise, your trust in the death, burial & resurrection of Jesus, is key to Christian relationships within the family of God.

So, Luke lays out the historicity of Jesus’ burial & resurrection.

Jesus was dead(23:46), buried(23:53), resurrected(24:5-7), & ascended into heaven(24:51).

What details surround Jesus’ burial & resurrection?

13 implications from the details surrounding Jesus’ burial & resurrection.

TAKE GOD’s MATTERS To HEART(24:8)

Explanation:(24:5-8)The women remembered.

24:8—And they remembered His words.”

Thus the women did indeed “remember” Jesus’ prophetic “words.”

The prophecy of the certainty of Jesus resurrection, was the very sign by which Jesus had scolded the scribes & Pharisees...

•Mat. 12:38-40—“Then some of the scribes & Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” But He answered & said to them, An evil & adulterous generation seeks after a sign, & no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days & three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days & three nights in the heart of the earth.”—Because of the “three nights”, some postulate a Thursday crucifixion.

He scolded them because it is only thru Jesus’ resurrection, that every believer is permanently ‘indwelled’ by God’s Holy Spirit:

•Eph. 1:13-14—“In Him[Christ Jesus] you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”

•John 16:13-15–Jesus, informing His disciples of the coming ministry of the Holy Spirit,—“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; & He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine & declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine & declare it to you.”

Argumentation:

Ps. 119:11—“Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!”

Col. 3:12-17—“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Jer. 15:16—“Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.”

1Jn. 5:3-4—“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.”

Rom. 7:19-25, 8:1—“For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

SHARE APPLICABLE NEWS(24:9-10)

Explanation:(24:9-10)The women told the disciples & the others.

24:9-10—“Then they returned from the tomb & told all these things to the eleven & to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, & the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.”

“The eleven”—By this time, Judas Iscariot has already hanged himself(Mat. 27:5; Acts 1:16-20), being remorseful but not repentant.

The women “told” “the eleven” disciples/“apostles” that Jesus’ body was missing....

•They “told” them ‘WHY’ Jesus body was missing!

•They no doubt, reminded the disciples/“apostles” that Jesus had told them that He would rise form the dead!

The women not only “told” the disciples/“apostles” “these things”, but they also “told” “all the rest” “all those things” that the two angels had revealed to them.

1)The women(plural) provided multiple witnesses.

2)These women were well know to the disciples as they were their traveling/ministering companions.

*So their testimony should have been completely compelling.

BE SHORT-SIGHTED(24:11)

Explanation:(24:11)We can suppose the truth to be nonsensical.

24:11—“And their words seemed to them like idle tales, & they did not believe them.”

The witness of the women seemed to be absolute ‘nonsense’(“idle tales”) to the 11 disciples/apostles & to all the rest(:9)!

NONE of the disciples “believed” the women’s testimony to either:

1)Jesus’ missing body;

2)The angel’s appearance;

3)The angel’s words;

4)The angel’s statement—“He is not here, but is risen”;

Nor did they believe the women when they spoke of:

5)Jesus’ forewarning about His death & subsequent rising on the third day!

Argumentation:

Ezekiel 2:3-7—“And He said to me: “Son of man, I am sending you to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me; they & their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. For they are impudent & stubborn children. I am sending you to them, & you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’ “As for them, whether they hear or whether they refuse--for they are a rebellious house--yet they will know that a prophet has been among them. And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them nor be afraid of their words, though briers & thorns are with you & you dwell among scorpions; do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their looks, though they are a rebellious house. You shall speak My words to them, whether they hear or whether they refuse, for they are rebellious.”

Illustration:

Suppose the Lord was to call you to be a Hospitality Minister. What expectations would you impose or force upon that call?

Suppose the Lord was to call you to be a Sunday School teacher. What expectations would you impose or force upon that call?

Suppose the Lord was to call you to be a Deacon. What expectations would you impose or force upon that call?

Suppose the Lord was to call you to be a Pastor. What expectations would you impose or force upon that call?

*We can be obedient to God’s ‘call’, which is a wonderful thing!

*BUT then we can also be SO ‘short-sighted’ in the execution of that call, that we wrench it out of God’s hands, & ‘take over’ the Holy Spirit’s leading!

•And by doing that, we turn the ‘call’ of God into a work of the flesh!

Application:

Let’s be honest with ourselves...

?Can YOU sometimes BE SHORT-SIGHTED in regard to what the risen Lord Jesus is attempting to show YOU?

?What Implications are brought to YOUR life by Jesus’ burial & resurrection?

CONCLUSION:

1Cor. 15:16-23—“For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, & has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.”

Rom. 4:25—of Jesus our Lord,—“who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification.”
