Some IMPLICATIONS From JESUS’ BURIAL & RESURRECTION-I—Luke 23:50--24:12
Need:
The burial & resurrection of Jesus is historical fact.
Trust in the fact of Jesus’ death, burial, & resurrection, is a key factor in a person’s being ‘born-again’. Trust in the facts surrounding Jesus’ death, burial, & resurrection is key to one’s relationship with the family of God.
So, Luke lays out the historicity of Jesus’ burial & resurrection.
Jesus was dead, buried, & resurrected.

MAN STRATEGIC PLACES(23:50-52)
Explanation:(23:50-52)
23:50-52—“Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good & just man. He had not consented to their decision & deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus.”
23:50—“Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good & just man.”
Immediately following Jesus’ death on the Cross, “a man named Joseph” of the “council” of ‘the Seventy’/Sanhedrin, plays a prominent role in that history. This “Joseph” was known to be both “good” & “just” in his handling of ‘the Jesus situation.’
“Joseph” saw no motive for disposing of Jesus. “Joseph” saw Jesus for who He claimed to be, though he certainly did not comprehend all of the ramifications that surrounded Jesus.
23:51—“He had not consented to their decision & deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.”
Though “Joseph”(:50) was currently a member of the “Council”(Sanhedrin), yet he did not support nor “consent” to their overall “decision” to act against Jesus.
•John 19:38 tells us that this “Joseph” of “Arimathea” was “secretly” “a disciple of Jesus” because “Joseph” “feared” “the Jews.” “Joseph’s” driving “fear” most likely stemmed from a “fear” of other members of the “Council”, as well as from the larger numbers of the public who were sympathizers of the “Council’s” “decisions.” Evidently if his faith were made known, then he would at the very minimum, be ousted from holding his position with the Sanhedrin. And that would effect his entire family both nuclear & extended.
The “council’s” “decision” in question was to be rid of Jesus by arresting Him under false pretenses, falsely ‘trying’ Him, & having Him killed(crucified) by convincing the occupying Romans of Jesus’ threat to the nation(Mat. 26:3-5; Mk. 14:1-2; Mat. 27:20-22, 25; Mk. 15:9-13; Jn. 19:14-16).
*Those condemning circumstances are exactly what Jesus had forewarned His disciples about(Mat. 16:21; Mat. 17:22-23; Mat. 20:17-19; Mk. 8:31; Mk. 10:32-34 Lk. 9:22; Lk. 18:31-33; Lk. 24:6-8, 46).
23:52—“...This man went to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus.”
Pontius “Pilate” , the Roman ruler over Judea, was asked by “Joseph” of “Arimathea”, if he could be allowed to take possession of “Jesus’” dead “body.”
Joseph’s being a known member of the Council, meant that “Pilate” would have had previous dealings with “Joseph” with some regularity.
“Pilate” supposed that giving “Jesus’” “body” to “Joseph” would have been a safe move on his part....
Due to the facts that:
1)“Joseph” was an upstanding Sanhedrin member, & that
2)Jesus Himself had earlier told “Pilate” that His kingdom was not of this world, & not centered in Jerusalem or “Pilate’s” realm, & that
3)“Pilate” knew that Jesus’ servants would NOT fight to install their King Jesus(Jn. 18:36-37).
Jn. 18:36-37—“Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, & for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.””
“Roman policy, when it was compassionate”[& it was not always compassionate!], “did not refuse burial to relatives of to anyone who asked for the body.”—Darrell L. Bock in BECNT
*Normally, if the “body” of anyone crucified was not claimed by family or friends, it would have been tossed into a duly designated pit for ‘mass’ burial with the bodies of other criminals(MNTC).
Mk. 15:43—“Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming & taking courage, went in to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus.”
•(Mk. 15:43)“Courage”—tolmaw—Verb—1) Not to dread or shun through fear; 2) To bear, endure; 3) To bring one's self to; 4) To be bold; 5) Bear one's self boldly, deal boldly. Strong—To venture(objectively or in act; while yarrew is rather subjective or in feeling); by implication--To be courageous; from tolma(boldness; probably itself from the base of telov through the idea of extreme conduct). RESTORE DIGNITY(23:53)
Explanation:(23:53)Not knowing the details
23:53—“Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, & laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.”
“So important is the burial of Jesus that all four Gospel writers provide details about [it].”—MNTC
Given that Joseph was rich(Mat. 27:57), & a member of the Sanhedrin, he may have had servants at his disposal. Yet his being a ‘secret’ disciple would probably have prevented him from involving them.
*John’s gospel tells us that Nicodemus was himself “a ruler of the Jews”, “the teacher of Israel”(Jn. 3:1, 10), & aided Joseph in the interment of Jesus’ body(Jn. 19:38-42).?•Jn. 19:38-42—“After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; & Pilate gave him permission. So he came & took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh & aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, & bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, & in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.”
Isa. 53:9—“And they made His grave with the wicked-- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
•The amount of spices[~75-100 lbs. in Jn. 19:39] Joseph & Nicodemus used to anoint Jesus’ body, would have normally been reserved for a king’s burial(DLBock in BECNT).
The “tomb” in which Jesus’ body was “laid”, had been commissioned by Joseph of Arimathea, to be hewn out of the rock for himself & his own family’s use!
Mat. 27:59-60—“When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, & laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; & he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, & departed.
•The “tomb” was also a ‘NEW’ “tomb”, & therefore “no” one’s body “had ever been” previously “laid” there.(Mat. 27:59-60). So, Jesus’ body was the very first to occupy Joseph of Arimathea’s “tomb.”
•So there was NO possibility of getting Jesus’ body confused with that of someone else.

PRIORITIZE GOD’s TIME RESTRAINTS(23:54)
Explanation:(23:54)Act Under Time Restraints
23:54—“That day was the Preparation, & the Sabbath drew near.”
“The Preparation” was a “day” set apart for any anticipated ‘work’ needed for a proper celebration of the upcoming special Passover week “Sabbath.” John refers to that particular “Sabbath” as a ‘high day’(Jn. 19:31).
This particular “Sabbath” was the second day of Passover, or the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, & was noted for the sheaf offering(Lev. 23:11)—DACarson in ‘The Gospel According to John’
So the particular “day” of the crucifixion & burial mentioned, had to have been on a Friday, because “the Sabbath” was always designated weekly, for a Saturday.
•Mk. 15:42-43—“Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,”....that... “Joseph of Arimathea”.....“went in to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus.”

LOVINGLY, SUPPORT GOD’s WORK(23:53)
Explanation:(23:55)[Mat. 27:60]
23:55—“And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, & they observed the tomb & how His body was laid.”
“The women” “observed” the burial of Jesus’ body by Joseph & Nicodemus.
These “women”(cf.-24:10) that are referred to, consisted of certain named individuals, as well as others that are unnamed: Mary Madalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James[the Less] & Joses, Salome, & Susanna.(Mat. 27:56; Mk. 15:40; Mk. 16:1; Lk. 8:2-3; Lk. 24:10).
“The women” “followed after”(‘to closely accompany’) Joseph & Nicodemus closely enough, so that they “observed” both the location of “the tomb” itself, as well as “how His body was laid” to rest in “the tomb.”
It is possible that “the women” did NOT directly observe the full preparation of Jesus’ “body.”
Given their close attention in the burial process, there is no way that the ladies would have later gone to the wrong tomb.

5—An Implication from Jesus’ burial & resurrection is that God’s People Can...
RESPECT GOD’s WILL(23:56)
Explanation:(23:56)
23:56—“Then they returned & prepared spices & fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.”
“Spices & fragrant oils” would have already been applied to Jesus’ body at the burial accomplished by Joseph & Nicodemus.
•The “spices & fragrant oils” would have included ‘myrrh’ & possibly ’frankincense’ as well.
Jn. 19:39—“And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh & aloes, about a hundred pounds.”
Mat. 2:11—“...And when they[the magi] had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him[Jesus]: gold, frankincense, & myrrh.”
So “the women” being aware of where & how Jesus’ body had been laid(:55), probably chose to ‘further anoint’ Jesus’ body even beyond the measure of what Joseph & Nicodemus had done.
The intention to anoint Jesus’ body by the ladies’, seems to be an extension of & an expression of their love for Jesus.
•Throughout Jesus ministry “the women” had attended to & ministered to His needs.
Mk. 15:40-41—“There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less & of Joses, & Salome, who also followed Him & ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, & many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.”
Lk. 8:1-3—“Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city & village, preaching & bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, & certain women who had been healed of evil spirits & infirmities--Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, & Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, & Susanna, & many others who provided for Him from their substance.”
The women were outwardly & inwardly forbidden to openly ‘work’ on the “Sabbath.” “The” Mosaic “Sabbath” “commandment”, was interpreted & applied to & thru Jewish civil law. So the ladies stayed home, late that Friday, & “prepared” the anointing materials for the first day of the week(Sunday).
And so “they rested on the Sabbath”, which was a Saturday.

CONCLUSION:
1Cor. 15:16-23—“For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, & has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.”
Rom. 4:25—of Jesus our Lord,—“who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification.”
