Jesus: The Rock of my Salvation
Study Text: 2 Samuel 22 : 47
Introduction:
- In the Bible, God is referred to as the “Rock.” There are several references in the Bible to God as the Rock.
- If your hope is in anyone or anything other than the Lord Jesus Christ, you are building on a crumbling foundation.
- A building is not secure unless it is built on solid ground with a good foundation. Neither is a person secure unless his life is built on Jesus Christ, the Solid Rock.
- We shall be discussing the topic under three subheadings:
1. Uncommon Blessings through Jesus the Rock.
2. Unwavering Believing in Jesus the Rock.
3. Unconquerable Building on Jesus the Rock.
1. Uncommon Blessings through Jesus the Rock:
- The uncommon blessings available to us through Jesus the Rock are in three dimensions:
1. The Sovereignty of Jesus the Rock.
- Jesus, in His mighty power does what pleases Him, and no one or power can resist what He does or chooses to do.
- Hannah testifies to His sovereignty: “There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2
- It is a great blessing to the Children of God that our Father can do all things and that no one or power can stop Him. Isaiah 44:6
2. The Smitting of Jesus the Rock.
- The people were in the hot desert without water. God told Moses to smite the rock. Moses did as God commanded and water flowed from the rock. Exodus 17:6, Psalm 105:41
- The water satisfied the thirst of at least two million people and all their livestock.
- Jesus the Rock, was smitten on the cross so whosoever will may “take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17)
- When Jesus was smitten, He was offering us the blessings of all round peace, divine healing from all manner of sicknesses and diseases, deliverance from all Satanic afflictions and oppression and restoration of all that the enemy has stolen or destroyed. John 10:10
3. The Salvation of Jesus the Rock.
- The greatest blessing offered to us is Salvation which only Him can give to mankind. Acts 4:12, Colossians 1:13
- We believe and confess that Jesus is the Lord and only Saviour. This offer to us the blessings of eternal life including those meant for us in this world, and the ones reserved for us in Heaven.
2. Unwavering Believing in Jesus the Rock:
- We need a steadfast, immovable and unwavering faith in Jesus the Rock for us to partake and enjoy His blessings continually.
1. Trusting in Jesus the Rock. 2 Sam. 22:3
- We must trust Jesus as our only hope, help and habitation in difficult situations. Proverbs 3: 5-8, Psalm 62:6
- Jesus is our great foundation stone.
2. Testimony about Jesus the Rock
- All the testimonies recorded in the Bible on the faithfulness of God in standing by all those who trusted in Him, are to encourage and strengthen us to trust Him undoubtedly in every situation we face.
- There are several references in both the Old Testament and the New Testament that can help us in building our confidence and trust in Jesus even in seemingly hopeless situations.
3. Unconquerable Building on Jesus the Rock:
- We are told to build on the foundation of Christ, our solid rock.
- There are three things that are essential in order for us to build. They are the Book, the Blood, and the Blessed Hope.
1. The Book on Jesus the Rock.
- Delight in the word of God and meditating in it so as to walk in it obediently is one of the surest way on building on a rocky foundation.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27
- God has spoken to us through His written word whose authour is the Holy Spirit, and it is God’s authority written on paper for man to read and heed.
- The Bible has the answers to man’s greatest questions and is foundational for the Christian life.
- The Word of God reveals to us how God created the universe, why there is sin, suffering and death in the world.
- The Bible tells us how God would redeem fallen man to Himself by offering His Son on the cross as our Saviour. The Bible tells us how Jesus defeated death and is now seated at the Father’s right hand.
- The Bible tells us that God is preparing for those who are His, a mansion in heaven. The Bible declares that God will make all things new. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
2. The Blood of Jesus the Rock.
- It is on the basis of Christ’s shed blood that we are redeemed and forgiven. We must never forget nor take lightly the blood of Christ.
- The blood of Christ should reminds us of four important truths.
1. The incarnation of Christ.
- Jesus was God, but came to the world as a man to pay the price for the remission of our sins. John 1:1-6
2. The sacrifice of Christ.
- Jesus was the Lamb without blemish and the only acceptable sacrifice by God for the propitiation of our sins.
3. The redemption of Christ.
- Jesus is the Saviour and only Him can Salvation be received. Acts 4:12
4. The resurrection of Christ.
- Jesus is the Sovereign seated on His throne. He did not only died, but resurrected on the third day to make the new life possible for all those who received Him. 2 Corinthians 5:15-17.
- The blood of Jesus was shed for our salvation. The blood is essential in order for us to have fellowship with God. 1 John 1:7
3. The Blessed Hope in Jesus the Rock.
- If our thoughts are on the Lord Jesus and His return for us, it will affect how we walk. Titus 2:11-13, 1 John 3:3
Conclusion:
- Our faith in the Lord will only grow as we feed daily on the Word of God. We must be cleansed by the blood of Jesus so we can remain in fellowship with the Lord.
- If we believe that the Lord Jesus could return at any moment, we will strive to live a righteous and godly life.
