BIG IDEA: From the very the Beginning, GOD had laid out HIS plan of redemption for the problem with sin that mankind suffered. HIS Plan is a real love story that was written in blood on a wooden cross in Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago and revealed in the 5th chapter of Genesis by word and name.
THIS IS A 2 PART SERMON.
PART 1. SIN DOESN’T SKIP GENERATIONS.
PART 2. WHAT’S IN A NAME? THE GENEALOGY OF ADAM, AND THE GOSPEL MESSAGE REVEALED.
INTRODUCTION:
GOD CHOSE US TO BE HIS, IN HIM, BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD EVEN BEGAN.
GOD WANTS US TO BE IN RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. TO LOVE HIM AND LIVE A HOLY LIFE WITHOUT BLAME. BUT HE ALREADY KNEW THAT WE WOULD STRUGGLE AND NEED TO BE RESCUED FROM OURSELVES. SO HE MADE A WAY, BEFORE THE NEED WAS EVER MENTIONED. JESUS WOULD REDEEM US THROUGH HIS OWN BLOOD FOR OUR FORGIVENESS.
THIS PLAN IS DESIGNATED FOR TIME. TIME WHICH ONLY EXISTS FOR THIS UNIVERSE UNTIL WE ARE GATHERED TO OUR FINAL ETERNAL DESTINATION, IN HIM.
Ephesians 1:3-10 (NKJV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.

PART 1. SIN DOESN’T SKIP A GENERATION. BUT WE ARE TOLD BY GOD THAT WE CAN RULE OVER IT.
Genesis 4:1-25 (NKJV)
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
6 So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
SIN LIES AT THE DOOR WAITING FOR YOU. IT’S DESIRE IS FOR YOU…TO DESTROY YOU…
BUT GOD SAYS WE HAVE THE POWER TO RULE OVER IT.
IT’S YOUR CHOICE.
THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH, CHOOSE LIFE.
THE FIRST MURDER. MANKIND IS STARTING OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT. FIRST THE SIN OF ADAM AND EVE, AND NOW THE NEXT GENERATION…MURDER.
8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
MANY OF OUR SAYINGS ARE OF OLD (TESTAMENT). HERE WE SEE THE WORDS “AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?” FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME.
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
FOUND GUILTY. BUT INSTEAD OF REPENTANCE. CAIN ANSWERS…
13 And Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
NOTICE THAT CAIN DOESN’T REPENT OF HIS ACTIONS, INSTEAD HE IS DEALING WITH HIS OWN GUILT HAVING BEEN FOUND OUT.
15 And the LORD said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
CAIN WAS MARKED BY THE LORD FOR CAIN’S PROTECTION.
GOD IS MERCIFUL IN ALL HIS WAYS.
FROM THE CROSS, JESUS SAID, “FATHER FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO.”

• A NEW SON, A NEW BEGINNING, A NEW 2ND GENERATION.
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.
A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE 2ND GENERATION. MEN BEGAN TO CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD.
PART 2. WHAT’S IN A NAME? THE GOSPEL MESSAGE REVEALED IN THE GENEALOGY OF ADAM.
WE USE THE TERM THE GOSPEL OR THE GOOD NEWS TO SPEAK OF GOD’S MESSAGE AND PLAN OF SALVATION.
QUESTION IS, WHERE IS THE FIRST PLACE IN THE BIBLE WHERE IT IS REVEALED?
LAST WEEK, IN CHAPTER 3, WE LOOKED AT THE FIRST MESSIANIC PROPHECY REGARDING THE HEAD OF THE SERPENT BEING CRUSHED, WHILE THE SERPENT WOULD BITE THE HEAL. THIS IS A REFERENCE TO JESUS AND THE MISSION HE WOULD TAKE FOR US UPON THE CROSS, CRUSHING SATAN, BUT TAKING THE PAIN AND SUFFERING OF OUR SIN ON OUR BEHALF IN HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS, WHERE THE “GREAT EXCHANGE” WOULD OCCUR, HIS LIFE FOR OURS.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY THE INSPIRATION OF GOD.
WE BELIEVE IN THE FIRST 39 BOOKS OF THE BIBLE, THE OLD TESTAMENT, BECAUSE JESUS CONFIRMED THEM. HE TAUGHT FROM THEM, AND THEY SPOKE OF HIM.
WE BELIEVE IN THE 27 BOOKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT BECAUSE JESUS IS “THE NEW COVENANT”, AND AUTHORIZED THE DISCIPLES TO CARRY HIS MESSAGE FORWARD TO US TODAY. THINK ABOUT IT. THE BIBLE, ANCIENT SCRIPTURES IS HERE FOR US TODAY.
AND THE ENTIRE BIBLE IS EVIDENCE OF GOD’S SUPERNATURAL DESIGN FOR ALL OF CREATION.
SO WHERE IS THE FIRST PLACE IN THE BIBLE WHERE GOD’S MESSAGE AND PLAN OF SALVATION ARE REVEALED?

IN GENESIS 5, WE FIND THE GENEALOGY OF ADAM. WHY IS THIS CHAPTER SINGLED OUT TO SHOW THE GENERATIONS FROM ADAM TO NOAH JUST 5 CHAPTERS INTO THE FIRST BOOK OF THE BIBLE?
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Proverbs 22:1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.
NAMES HAVE MEANINGS BEHIND THEM. WHILE OUR PARENTS GAVE US OUR NAMES, THOSE NAMES ARE A DEFINITION OF THE CHARACTER OF OUR EXISTENCE.
IN SCRIPTURE, THE HEBREW NAMES ALSO HAVE SPECIAL MEANING. AND IN THIS GENEALOGY OF ADAM, WE WILL SEE THAT GOD’S ORDER SPELLS OUT A GREAT MYSTERY, REVEALING HIS PLAN OF SALVATION FOR MANKIND.
LET’S BEGIN.
Genesis 5:1-32 the genealogy of Adam
ADAM = MAN
1 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
SETH = APPOINTED
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.
ENOSH = MORTAL
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died.
CAINAN = SORROW
12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
MAHALALEL = THE BLESSED GOD
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.
JARED = SHALL COME DOWN
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
ENOCH = TEACHING
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
METHUSELAH = HIS DEATH SHALL BRING
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.
LAMECH = THE DESPAIRING
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.” 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.
NOAH = REST and/or COMFORT
32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
SO WHAT’S IN A NAME, OR WHAT’S IN THE ORDER OF THESE HEBREW NAMES?
HAVING UNCOVERED THE HEBREW MEANING OF THESE NAMES…
WE CAN SEE THE GOSPEL MESSAGE IS FOUND IN THE GENEALOGY OF GENESIS 5.
AND IT GOES LIKE THIS…
MAN (that’s you and me) IS APPOINTED (chosen, predestined) MORTAL (for a time…not for eternity) SORROW (pain, suffering, sorry here on Earth);
BUT THE BLESSED GOD (who is YESHUA - JESUS) SHALL COME DOWN (from Heaven to Earth), TEACHING (showing us) THAT HIS DEATH (on the cross) SHALL BRING TO THE DESPAIRING (to you and me), REST AND COMFORT. (Our Salvation and Peace with GOD).
READ THAT AGAIN…
“Man is appointed mortal sorrow; but the Blessed God shall come down teaching that His death shall bring the despairing rest or comfort.”
WHAT’S IN THE NAMES OF GENESIS 5?
GOD’S MESSAGE OF SALVATION PROCLAIMED, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF TIME.
HAVE YOU HEARD THE MESSAGE PROCLAIMED?
HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE MESSAGE GIVEN?
