A Prayer Of Praise”
Psalm 92:1-15
Do you remember the last time you offered a prayer of praise? Perhaps it’s been a while, but the Bible teaches us that it’s good to lift prayers of praise to God.
God does so much for us and to us yet the real reason to praise His Holy Name is because He is God.
From time to time it would do us well simply to acknowledge a Holy God!
Let’s look at our verses together.
« A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day. »
Vs. 1 “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:”
Give thanks - yadah (yaw-daw’) to throw, shoot, cast
Notice to whom we are to give thanks too. “unto the LORD”
LORD - Y?hovah (yeh-ho-vaw’) Jehovah= "the existing One"
Sing praises - zamar (zaw-mar’) to sing, make music, to play a musical instrument
O most High - ‘elyown (el-yone’) a name of God which means: Highest, Most High
There is a declaration of God’s preeminence.
Revelation 19:16 “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Vs. 2 “To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,
Interesting that we see morning and night .
Lovingkindness in the morning – Mercy
Great reasons to praise Him in the morning:
(a) We have been preserved through the dangers of the night; dangers when we were asleep, unconscious, and defenseless.
(b) Every day is a new gift
(c) To praise God in the morning will have a good influence on us, in promoting cheerfulness and a good attitude
Barns Notes says: “There is no better preparation for a day, in view of its burdens, cares, toils, and trials, than a thankful, cheerful mind in the morning. He who begins a day with a sour, a morose, a complaining, an irritable spirit - who has been preserved through the night, and sees nothing to be thankful for in the morning - will be a miserable man through the day, and will make all miserable around him. He who sees nothing to be thankful for in the morning will see nothing to hope for in the day; he who has no gratitude for the past, will have no bright anticipations of the future.”
Faithfulness every night - steadfastness, steadiness
To contemplate the faithfulness of God at the close of every day.
(a) The mind is then calm, after the work of the day is over.
(b) The time - evening - its stillness - its twilight - its approaching darkness - all is favorable for reflection.
(c) There is much in every day to be thankful for, and it is well to recall it at night.
(d) It has a effect on the mind when we are about to lie down to rest, to recall the mercies of God;
If we are to sleep soundly; it will come when we have spent time reflecting all that the LORD has done just through this one day.
Vs 3 “Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.”
I am not talented in the use of musical instrument but I do have the ability to turn on some great soothing music that will help with the preparation for a night of peace.
Put away the beat of the modern music and look for a music that is calm and peaceful.
Vs. 4 “For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.”
When we reflect on what the Lord has done in our lives it can and will make us rejoice.
I will triumph - I will exult or rejoice.
In the works of thy hands - In all thy works; in all that thou hast done.
Vs. 5 “O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.”
Not a question but a declaration!
How great are thy works! – When we begin to meditate on the Greatness and Holiness of God, we come to understand that we know very little of who God is but we know enough to realize we need HIM!!!
Thy thoughts are very deep – we cannot out think God, nor do we fully understand what the Lord is doing in our lives; but we can spend time just praising HIM!
The World without Christ:
Vs. 6-11 “A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this. 7 When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever: 8 But thou, LORD, art most high for evermore. 9 For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. 10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. 11 Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.”
1 Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
The world may laugh and make jokes about praising God; that is because they do not know the love of Christ nor do they understand the forgiveness each day that we need.
The Christian Because Of Christ:
Vs. 12-15 “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; 15 To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
I see the intent that the Lord has for His children; that we would grow in grace and His knowledge and that we would then bring forth fruit!
Conclusion:
Do you know the LORD?
When was the last that you came before the Lord; not with your problems, but just to say “I LOVE YOU?”
A Prayer Of Praise.
It Will Be Worth It All (1941)
Esther Kerr Rusthoi
(February 21, 1909 – April 8, 1962)
The song faces the temptation to fret and despair, but it also takes encouragement in an event about which the Word of God says we are to “comfort one another” (I Thess. 4:18).
1. Sometimes the day seems long,
Our trials hard to bear.
We´re tempted to complain,
to murmur and despair.
But Christ will soon appear
to catch his bride away!
All tears forever over
in God’s eternal day!
CHORUS:
It will be worth it all
when we see Jesus!
Life’s trials will seem so small
when we see Christ.
One glimpse of his dear face,
all sorrow will erase.
So, bravely run the race
till we see Christ.
2. At times the sky seems dark,
with not a ray of light;
We’re tossed and driven on,
no human help in sight.
But there is One in heaven,
Who knows our deepest care;
Let Jesus solve your problems,
just go to him in prayer.
3. Life’s day will soon be o’re,
all storms forever past;
We’ll cross the great divide
to Glory, safe at last!
We’ll share the joys of heaven:
a harp, a home, a crown;
The tempter will be banished,
We’ll lay our burdens down.
