Clothing as a gift from the Lord
“And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.” (Genesis 3:21)
As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, they felt ashamed of their nakedness. They tried to cover themselves by weaving fig leaves together, and when the Lord God visited them, they hid in the bushes. But their primitive clothing could not hide the real problem. God knew exactly what they had done: they had disobeyed Him.
After the Lord God pronounced His punishment, He sent the people away from His beautiful garden. They could no longer live in His presence. But before He let them go, He gave them a gift that would make their life in the world a little easier. God Himself made them clothes of animal skins to replace their self-made ‘clothes’ of fig leaves.
That is remarkable. Although the need for clothing reminds us of our sin, clothing is also a gift from the Lord God. He did not leave us humans to our own devices when we stepped on His heart. He still loved us. Every time Adam and Eve saw their clothes, they were reminded of the loving care of their Creator.
Is clothing a sign of God’s care for you, too? What other things remind you of His love and affection towards you as his own child whom he created?
