JESUS GLORIFIED-II—John 12:27-28(:20-36)

Attention:

I have a launched a personal campaign against a particular plant in the woods surrounding the parsonage. I have no real quarrel with anything else there. It is actually idyllic!

But we have an abundance of ‘poison ivy/oak’ at the edge of the woods, in four different areas & on all three sides! I have found that the ‘poison ivy’ is very prolific!

I have bought a chemical pump sprayer & two containers of an herbicide containing ‘triclopyr’, trying to kill it. And I will have to admit that it does my heart good to see ‘poison ivy/oak’ wither after being sprayed. The chemical ‘triclopyr’ puts the ‘poison ivy’ out of commission!

I have just ‘glorified’ for you—declared the merits of— a chemical herbicide that does what it’s supposed to!

But on a VASTLY more important note...

*Jesus does what He’s supposed to do! He has taken the sting out of death & put the joy in life!

Therefore you will find that EVERY TRUE CHURCH ‘glorifies’—declares the merits of, points to, proclaims the worth of, the beauty of, the value of, & calls attention to JESUS ABOVE ALL ELSE!

God’s people Glorify Jesus above everything! He will never forsake those who are His!(Gen. 12:15; Deut. 4:31) If it weren’t for Jesus we would be like the majority of people who have no hope in this world!(Eph. 2:12) We owe our very lives & eternal lives to Jesus!

Excerpted from The New Oxford American English Dictionary:

•GLORY(Noun) = ‘High renown or honor won by notable achievements’ OR: ‘Magnificence or great beauty.’

•To GLORIFY(Verb) = ‘To cause the dignity & worth of some person or thing to become manifest & acknowledged.’ OR: ‘To render/esteem/consider as glorious.’

•GLORIOUS(Adjective) = ‘Having a striking beauty or splendor that evokes feelings of delighted admiration.’

JESUS GLORIFIED-II—John 12:20-36

Need:

All people are in dire need of knowing the fact, that Jesus life death, resurrection, & ascension are of eternal consequence to them.

The apostle John recorded some of the events surrounding the imminence of Jesus’ glorification.

There are aspects of Jesus’ being glorified that are of great consequence/significance.

How &/or Why is Jesus glorified?

6 significant/consequential aspects of Jesus’ glorification.

GOD’s PURPOSE(:27-28)

Explanation:(:27-28)

:27—“Now My soul is troubled, & what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.”

John does not include Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, but only that He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot & arrested & bound by “officers of the Jews” who were dispatched “from the chief priests & Pharisees.”(Jn. 18:1-3, 12)

*The prayer in the garden—cf.-Mat. 26:36-44; Mk. 14:32-39; Lk. 22:40-46.

Mat. 26:36-44—“Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, & said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go & pray over there.” And He took with Him Peter & the two sons of Zebedee, & He began to be sorrowful & deeply distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here & watch with Me.” He went a little farther & fell on His face, & prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Then He came to the disciples & found them asleep, & said to Peter, “What? Could you not watch with Me one hour? “Watch & pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, a second time, He went away & prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” And He came & found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. So He left them, went away again, & prayed the third time, saying the same words.”

Mk. 14:32-39—“Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; & He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And He took Peter, James, & John with Him, & He began to be troubled & deeply distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here & watch.” He went a little farther, & fell on the ground, & prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” Then He came & found them sleeping, & said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch & pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again He went away & prayed, & spoke the same words.”

Lk. 22:40-46—“When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, & He knelt down & prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. When He rose up from prayer, & had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise & pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

*Jesus’ “soul” was agonizingly unsettled because He knew the entire course of His life had led to this point in His life(Jn. 12:23). He would be required to die in order to satisfy His “Father’s”(God’s) will. And that time for Jesus was now upon Him!

That Jesus was “troubled” in the very depths of His “soul” reminds us that He knew His life would be taken from Him AS A RESULT OF obeying His Father’s desire!

Jesus asks a question that reveals His predicament. And as a result, there was nothing that He could “say” against it.

*It would have been an exercise in fleshly self-service for Jesus to ask His “Father” to “save” Him “from” the very time of the culmination of & the fulfillment of His ministry.

:27b—...“But for this purpose I came to this hour.”

If Jesus had indeed been taken “from” His God-ordained assigned & accepted task, then His actions would have resulted in the utter failure of God’s plan! And so, mankind would have forever been lost to sin & to hell!!

•Heb. 2:14—“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,”

**When our “souls” are “troubled”, We would do well to find the same ‘solution’, & come to the same firm ‘conclusion’, that Jesus did!...

1)And that ‘solution’ is to fulfill God’s purpose in God’s way/manner.

2)And that ‘conclusion’ is to fulfill God’s purpose no matter our lack of understanding regarding God’s way/manner, & no matter the personal ‘pain’ we might experience as a result!

:28a—“Father, glorify Your name.”...

In direct communication with His “Father”, Jesus asked that His Father’s name be “glorified.”

God’s “glorification” was confidently sought by Jesus thruout His work/ministry on earth. From the time of His birth to the time where “the hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified”(:23), Jesus has faithfully sought His “Father’s” will!

•Rev. 2:10—John was told to write to the angel of the church in Smyrna—“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer.”.....“Be faithful until death, & I will give you the crown of life.”

Mat. 6:10—‘The Lord’s Prayer’ describes what it means to seek God’s will above your own:—“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.”

1Cor. 4:1-2—“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ & stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”

Lk. 16:10—“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; & he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.”

:28b—...“Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it & will glorify it again.”

In response to Jesus’ prayer, “a voice”, an audible “voice”(:29), Jesus “Father’s” “voice”, “came from heaven.”

•That answer came to everyone there as a result of Jesus’ sincerely praying for God to “glorify” His own “name.”

Because Jesus’ commitment to faithfully bring about His “Father’s” “glory” had been done thruout His life, God’s “name” had indeed been “glorified.”

In fact, due to Jesus constant faithfulness(thruout His life in human flesh) in seeing God’s work thru to the end, God the “Father” then declares with certainty, that He would “glorify” His name “again”!

•That is, even in the face of death, Jesus would not cease to be faithful to God’s purposes!

Argumentation:

Esther 4:14—Esther’s uncle Mordecai counseling his niece the Queen of Persia(Iran)—““For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief & deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you & your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?””

Gen. 6:5, 13, 14, 19, 22—“”.....“And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; & behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, & cover it inside & outside with pitch.”.....“And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male & female.”.....“Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.”

Rom. 8:18-22—“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans & labors with birth pangs together until now.”

Jonah 1:1-3—Jonah’s disobedience—“Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, & cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, & found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, & went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.”

Num. 22:20-22, 31-34—Balaam’s disobedience—“And God came to Balaam at night & said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise & go with them; but only the word which I speak to you--that you shall do.” So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, & went with the princes of Moab. Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, & the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, & his two servants were with him.”.....“Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, & he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; & he bowed his head & fell flat on his face. And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. “The donkey saw Me & turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, & let her live.” And Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back.””

Deut. 5:11—‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

‘Taking the Lord’s name in vain’ involves vastly more than using a particular cuss-word! Actually, a person ‘takes the Lord’s name in vain’ every time they refuse God’s will. From what may SEEM to an individual, to be the smallest & most insignificant directive of God, to the most involved life-changing directive of God, God’s purpose is God’s Purpose!

Illustration:

Salem Road has been ‘improved’ from the Coxe Road intersection northward. The road surface was restored & modernized, the Bridge was updated, Caution signs were added. In order to accomplish all of that, someone(s) somewhere(county commissioners/congressmen) had to make a plea for the money, the labor, & the equipment. The logistics people had bring all the elements together at the proper time. Each of the people involved had to add their ‘obedience’ to the purposes of improving Salem Road. Their obedience ensured that the improvement would actually happen, & not just remain on the pages of a plan gathering dust somewhere. GOD’s PURPOSE

Application:

?Do YOU trust Jesus’ submission to GOD’s PURPOSE?

?Are YOU committed to GOD’s PURPOSE?

?Do YOU trust that Jesus’ glorification necessitates His submission to God?
