Part 2: Called to Pray. Study on Prayer and the LORD's Prayer. When to Pray.
Drilling down into “The LORD’s Prayer” and the 7 Prayers and Petitions within that JESUS taught the disciples.
PART 2
Matthew 6:9-13 is often referred to as "The LORD's PRAYER" or the "OUR FATHER" prayer. JESUS taught this to the disciples when they asked "How to Pray?" Since it was given to the disciples, it could be called "The Disciple's Prayer", which is a prayer for every follower of CHRIST JESUS.
Matthew 6:9-13
9 After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
SEVEN (7) PETITIONS AND PRAYERS OF THE LORD’S PRAYER
The “OUR FATHER” PRAYER
1. OUR FATHER, WHICH ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME.
Galatians 4:6 (NKJV) And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
As a believer and follower of JESUS CHRIST who has been Sealed by HOLY SPIRIT…
GOD sent THE SPIRIT of JESUS into our hearts from which we cry out, Daddy, Father to the Almighty GOD and Everlasting FATHER.
Whether male or female, you are the CHILD of GOD when you receive the GIFT of SALVATION and HE puts HIS SPIRIT IN you, by your faith in HIM.
HALLOWED BE THY NAME. The NAME of GOD is HOLY and to be reverenced. We may know THE NAME as the Hebrew letters, Yod, Hey, Vav, Hey, but for many Jews, they do not even utter THE NAME so that it would not be spoken in vain. As stated in the 10 commandments. Do not take the LORD’s NAME in vain.
2. THY KINGDOM COME
As Believers, we have an inner desire for GOD’s KINGDOM, GOD’s REIGN to be established here and now on earth.
3. THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
At the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus echoed these words in prayer at the rock. The pressures of our sin was upon HIM, crushing in agony leading up to the Cross at Calvary. Yet in that crushing HE prayed even more.
“On earth as it is in heaven”, bringing heaven, the storehouse of heaven and its blessings down to earth. We desire for the eternal, the supernatural to be here and now on earth.
Luke 22:39, 41-46
39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.
41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,
42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
4. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD
JESUS stated that HE was the Bread of Life. At the Last Supper HE took the bread and wine and shared it to represent HIS Body and the Blood, which was exchanged for our Life and Forgiveness.
Give us our Daily Bread? Give us our daily portion of JESUS. Give me JESUS. Not just for your physical needs, but more importantly, for your spiritual need.
Never lacking, never more than we need. Just enough for each day. In the wilderness, they gathered and consumed for each day. Anything left to the next day became spoiled. Give us our daily portion for today.
5. FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS.
Debts? The wages of sin, the debt of sin.
Forgive us our debts, sins, trespasses, faults etc. and teach us to forgive the debt, sin, fault or trespass of others. Forgive, and be forgiven. How can we who have been forgiven, hold back forgiveness of others. If we are to live, we must live by the same standard as GOD has shown toward us. We forgive, because we have been forgiven.
I believe this teaches us additionally about "the Fear of The LORD", as we realize our need to forgive is required in our own forgiveness.
6. LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION.
GOD knows our weaknesses, our vulnerabilities.
If we follow after HIM, we stay on the straight and narrow. It’s listening to the voice of HIS SPIRIT within us and following HIS lead. It requires focus, and a quietness in your spirit, to listen for that still small voice.
Luke 22:40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
7. BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
Evil is everywhere and in varying forms that may try to lure us in (temptation).
The enemy targets the active and effective followers of CHRIST, trying to bring them down and make them fall. The enemy is not bothered by the inactive “Christian” who is not a threat to spread the GOOD NEWS of JESUS.
Take a look at the LORD’s Prayer from beginning to end, it begins with Praise and ends with Praise. In the midst of Praise, we bring our requests to FATHER GOD.
Thy Name, Thy Kingdom, Thy Will.
Give us, Forgive us, Lead us, Deliver Us.
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY, FOREVER. AMEN!
If we look at it in reverse, we can get another perspective.
We start out understanding WHO is HEAD over all things. For THINE is…
...The Kingdom, Power and Glory - all belong to GOD.
And also, that there is opposition. Deliver us from evil, Lead us not into temptation
We require forgiveness, and it is required that we forgive others as well.
We need our daily portion of CHRIST to get us through the day.
Our desire is for the WILL of GOD to be done here on earth as it is in Heaven.
Our desire is for GOD’s KINGDOM to be here and now
For GOD is HOLY, even in NAME alone.
And we desire to be in the presence of OUR FATHER, Creator of Heaven and Earth.
Even so come quickly LORD JESUS. Amen and Amen.
BE Blessed and BE a Blessing,
Bill
