The most important Miracle
Let me ask you all a question here, there is no right or wrong to this question. I think it is more of a personal opinion kind of thing.
The question is; what do you think was the most important miracle Jesus ever preformed?
Some may say, the raising of Lazarus, some may say the healing of the crippled at the pool at Bethsaida. Maybe the healing of blinded eyes or demon processed people being freed of that oppression.
Again there is no right or wrong answer here. As I studied this topic for this sermon, my answer came to this one miracle. It was the very first miracle Jesus ever preformed that was noted in the Bible, the turning water into wine at the Marriage in Cana of Galilee.
If you will turn to the book of John, Chapter 2:1 -11.
2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
2:3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
2:6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
2:7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
2:8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
I want to preach a few minutes on this subject,
What is happening here.
Here we see Jesus being invited along with some of the disciples to this wedding in Cana. The wedding had already happened as we see Jesus has showed up during the reception of this wedding. Jesus, mother, Mary came up to him and told Jesus that they do not have any more wine left for the guest. I can assume that maybe Mary was the coordinated or the person in charge here to make sure everything went smooth and everyone had enough to eat and drink.
For some odd reason Mary told Jesus here in verse 3 that they have no more wine.
Jesus spoke something back to Mary that stuck out to me as odd to, Jesus called his mother “woman”, not mom, not Mary but woman.
But Jesus goes on and tells his mother, that mine hour is not yet come. Where and why did He say this for?
Let me back up just a little bit and start breaking what really just happened here.
I will use what I call some keys to unlock some of what was happening here. I looked at theses verses from 1 through 11 and found I needed to have a good many keys to unlock what I believe to be the real truth of what was happening here.
If you notice the use of the word water, then wine?
Let’s look deeper into those words being used here.
1st When the word water is used in the bible, it also typifies, The Word of God
2nd Here, when the word wine is used in the Bible, this typifies, the Holy Spirit.
Look in verse 3 here, it tells us they wanted wine, but they have no wine.
Let’s look down at verse 6 here. Jesus tells the servant to fill the water pots with water, not only did they fill them but they filled them to the brim.
Then in verse 8, it says, they tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it came. But the servants knew, they knew where it came from!
Let’s jump back up to verse 1 here. Notice the word Third Day.
The number three in the Bible, typifies Completeness.
Then in verse 6 we see the number 3 again with two or three firkins. What in the world is a Firkin?
It is the size or amount of liquid back in those days, which is like 9 gallons per firkin. So here we see this is a lot of water, between 18 to 27 gallons!
Well preacher then what does the number 2 mean or typifies in the bible? That means, Harmony, Kinship, and Cooperation.
A man and a woman, though two in number, are made one in marriage. There is also a union of 2 between Christ and the church.
The testimony of God is divided into two Testaments (Old and New). His agreements with mankind are divided into Old and New Covenants.
What about the number 3? This mean Completeness. Like the completed tri God head, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. He was placed on the cross at the 3rd hour of the day (9 a.m.) and died at the 9th hour (3p.m.). There were 3 hours of darkness that covered the land while Jesus was suffering on the cross from the 6th hour to the 9th hour. The number 9 is used 49 times in Scripture, the number 9 symbolizes divine completeness or conveys the meaning of finality. Christ was thought dead for three full days and nights and in the tomb.
Are you all catching what I’m trying to say or do here? I’m here to open something up for you today and show you that something we as Christians may overlook as something as simple as turning water into wine wasn’t all the impressive. I mean Moses turned the Nile River waters into blood, and the Nile River is the longest river on earth.

There is something happening here that if you look a little deeper maybe dig a little longer you will find what I believe is the true meaning of what is really happening.
What I believe God intended to do and once you figure it out you will see it throughout the entire Bible. Numbers and many named things mean a lot more than they appear on paper. In what they teach you in seminary it is called Numbers and typology. This my friend will open up a brand new Bible to you and one that I truly believe God intended to do for those that seek the truth of the gospel. Jesus even spoke to His disciple in Parables and of the mystery the Bible speaks about. Numbers are important in the Word of God, He even named a book called Numbers.
Matthew 13:10-11
The Purpose of Jesus' Parables
10 Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
Matthew 11:25
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes…
Romans 16:25
25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began
1 Corinthians 2:7
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
1 Corinthians 4:1
1 let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
This is no secret, this is what happens when you get deep into the study of the Word.
A mathematician once calculated the entire Bible as to its accuracy from Genius to Revelation. Added in the typology meanings, the numbers meanings, the symbol meanings and when it finally came back, this man said the Bible was so correct that the odds of another book this length would be 400 hundred and 43 million to 1 of it happening again. Think on that a moment. 400 and 43 million to 1.
What I am saying is this church, God has the mystery for us to find, and we have to spend time understanding the Word to find that mystery. The depth and length of this book becomes more alive in God’s thoughts when you apply the numbers and symbols that God has put in His book.
Let’s look at verse 6 here. Note it says six water pots of stone. The number 6 means – Man,
The stone means, of God, His creation.
If you notice in the Bible that anything that God or Jesus calls a stone or rock was of God and it would not be destroyed.
If you read where the word, “brick” is used, it is being used in the form of something being torn down, or in other words made by man. An example would be the Tower of Babel, it got destroyed. The bricks the Hebrews made during their time of bondage in Egypt, that brought sorrow. These things were not of God.
Jesus told Peter that He would build His church upon a rock, that is God made.
You see that Stone is Jesus
1 Corinthians 10:4 |
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Psalms 62:6 |
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved.
Listen church, that rock that stone that God made was good enough for God Himself to write the 10 commandments on. It wasn’t written on paper, it was etched into some brick that man had made, and it was a stone.
Let’s go back to where I mentioned that Jesus called His mother Woman in verse 4. Here Jesus allowed that inner transformation to come forth as when that light shined from him on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus was showing
his human mother that had come for the entire world to be set apart as the complete and final sacrifice for humanity. Yes, Jesus was all human and he was all God, but the sinless perfection in him was that of God. Two reasons I say this;
1- Jesus said, mine time is not yet come, meaning his death and resurrection
2- Jesus showed Mary that he was about to show her the reason he was born to a virgin which happened to be the person standing before him. His mother was going to see her son’s first miracle.
I will try my best to close this as I could apply so many more things here that we would be here another hour or two. But let me explain to you why I think Jesus’s very first miracle was his most important to me.
Here Jesus went to this marriage in Cana to meet his mother and without just chance happening but an event that was setup by God himself thousands or more years before hand.

Here in God’s Holy Book, he is telling us what really is happening here is this.
God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to seek man, his own creation, to instill in him the Word of God and have them receive the Holy Spirit. For Jesus time is not yet come to an end but just the beginning of His ministry.
It wasn’t written on paper, it wasn’t etched into some brick that man had made, it was a stone.
The 6 pots means man.
The water means the Word of God
The wine mean the Holy Spirit
The number 3 means, God has completed His promise to bring us a Saviour, a perfect sacrifice unto him, without blemish or spots.
The two and three together goes further and tells us that, kinship and harmony we have in God’s complete plan.
Without Jesus coming, then the Holy Spirit would not come afterwards.
Without Jesus giving us the Word of God we would not have the understanding we have today.
Without the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, we would not have the desire to seek God and all His glory.
Church, without Jesus doing what He did, we would still be living without a Redeemer a Saviour and without God’s Word to guide us to our Heavenly Home one day.
This World needed a miracle and Jesus delivered it to all of us, for you, for me for everyone willing to accept Him as our Saviour, the very Son of God.
I just want you to look deeper in your Bible the next time you read it, pray before you read it, ask God to show you those things that have been stored away for those desiring to understand what God is telling all of us.
God came to us to allow us to reunited again in Heaven for ever and ever.
